[Custom Decor] Custom Decor System Needs Reform

Posted 2023-09-06 14:19:25
Something happened in the line up with your custom decor or something, Buck.  Yes waiting for submissions can take a long time but it should be more like a few weeks max not months (in my experience anyway).  I would either resubmit and/or modbox to let them know what happened with the decor previously and would like attention given to the decor if you end up resubmitting it (for someone to make sure it is reviewed by someone).

Unfortunately I've been told by Modbox that they refuse to handle anything related to CDs now, so I'm not sure if Buck can even reach out to them. I suppose it's worth a shot, though.

In my experience it is not unheard of for decors to get lost in the mix for 3-4 months, and it has only gotten worse as time has gone on

I've definitely talked with people that had their decors waiting months (1 person even had it waiting almost a year). And nope, modbox only deals with refunding custom decor items, not reviewing it or doing anything about it.

Well that makes sense about modbox.  I have a modbox about one of my decors and they claimed it but never responded to it.  Its been months since I submitted it.

That'd probably be why then. Most mods are just volunteers and don't have enough authority to really do anything about the custom decor situation.

I'd like to also point out that my interactions with Xylax have seldom been pleasant. He has rejected my work over and over and over, essentially told me that he thinks my work will never measure up to that of the official artists, and one time even explained how shading and highlighting works to me as if I'm a 10 year old because "there is almost no shading whatsoever" in my work, apparently. (That particular incident was after I already had 60+ approved decors. Feels pretty man-splain-y. 😬)

I know there is always room for improvement, but as an established artist both IRL and in this game, this has hurt my pride and caused endless frustration for myself and my customers.

I support. I also think that the head artists need to be more understanding about how some people may not be able to use photoshop or other expensive (or non-expensive but still costing money) applications or websites or what not. I was once told that my art was too pixellated and "this should be a quick fix" except the app I was using did not at all have any blurring tools and this meant I had to redraw things, so to me it felt a bit off putting to be told it was a "quick fix". There's also the fact that all of the help thingies provided in the custom decor guide are photoshop files so people who don't use photoshop can't even open them? I'm not good at computer stuff but I did try a while ago to find a way to get those files to open but I couldn't

Replying to mercuries latest reply:
It literally pains me to read this - and I never wanted to say this publically because I love this game and the artists but - especially when there's so many custom decors that look much much better than some of the official decors..

Good point @Tallbarr. I think that just speaks to the ridiculous standards that we are being held to. They expect us to have all this fancy expensive software and spend months/years learning how to mimic their style perfectly, just to neglect us as a community and tell us that our work will never measure up...

I have closed my customs possibly forever. I'm really just done.

I felt the same way after some official decor resembling some of the best selling custom decors was released. At the same-ish time in one of the polls they had asked what decors they should put out and one of the suggestions were lighting decors which is my specialty and wolvden had never seemed interested in those kind of decors, In the same wave they announced that they were looking for artists, and I must have seen wrong or something because I was convinced it said you didn't need a portfolio and I assumed since I've made so many custom decors they should at least consider my application, which they didn't because I have no portfolio. I admit my application was probably not the best but it really felt like they were totally trying to screw over all custom decor artists in that period of time, so I got kinda mad at everything, took my decors down and stopped rolling over for a while.
