Discussion: Clans

Posted 2021-09-17 23:23:36
After the news update, I'm also torn on clans now seeing how it's not going to be a "battle based" thing

This is super disappointing while I understand not wanting to exclude people from content but...What's the point of joining a clan then? I mean we have discord already and there's plenty of communities on there as of right now so why add an in-game community feature that's just discord but limiting+monthly payment, some might say raffles which, sure? I suppose? But even then a raffle is more successful when it's not clan only, the only thing I could think of that'd be beneficial to join a clan is when someone needs a quick item from the hoard but that's about it

Everything on the list would b great to have but specifically I'm hoping to see clan-specific private forums, clan discounts on stud fees and personal shops (wich I really hope is going to be a thing) and optional clan membership fees. (I'm taking this as individual members pay a monthly fee in order to be a member.
I personally think (and this is probably a stretch as to what's actually doable) but I would love the option to have this fee automatically withdraw from my account so I don't have to remember to pay. And I what would happen if a member failed to pay? Would they be ejected for the clan (I would rather this not happen) perhaps just blocked from clan stuff like clan-specific private forums, discounts or clan raffles (wich I also hope will be a thing.

So after reading what's being discussed in here I would like to add this:
First off I love the term "Lodge" opposed to "Clan" I hope they will all be called lodges.
As for this thing about alliances or battles or event specific groups I like this idea and I would love to see it implemented. But I personally think they should be something separate from clans/lodges/social group. I would love to have a battle system implemented that would be somewhat like what people have been discussing already but it should be something entirely separate. I think this would allow people to still join all the social groups but then still belong to an alliance.

Initial Thoughts
I enjoy clans on Lioden (because of the raffles & open hoards), but that doesn't mean they don't need improvement.

Thinking Out Loud
I don't know if clans can have their own private chats on site or not, but that could be useful? To make each clan feel like a community. On lioden, so many clans have their own discord -- but I legit cannot be swayed to log onto discord and check the chats of multiple clans. If it was on site, I'd probably stop by way more.

Maybe there could be a (reasonable) limit on how many clans a person can join? That way they're dedicated to those clans, rather than spread too thin? I'm not pushing hard for this. Just an idea.

Also, I personally wouldn't like events/rewards that are exclusive to people in that clan.

I still think the idea of a lodge vs clan is more appealing overall. I was never able to get into lioden but I've checked wolves daily since joining so while I understand that it's our sister site wolvden is clearly benefitting from not working the same as lioden in my opinion

One of my biggest issues with clans as a social thing in games is that it usually results in a dead private forum that no one actually uses and you're instead directed to a discord, which I can never keep up with.

I think the idea of a lodge gives the impression that you are literally building a place, a lodge, for your clan to be at, and I think that concept is very appealing. I do very much think that there should be some sort of lodge upgrades you can work towards, whether that's say unlocking a chat box at x members or what have you. Though I think boss battle type things should be avoided.

Another thing is with "official guild events rewards" my main concern is this: who is putting forward the event and reward? If it's site mandated for all guilds, what if I have a small guild of three pp, you'd be at an obvious disadvantage depending on how the events work

I think site wide events is more than enough, if a lodge wants to do a personal event that should be up to the actual members in the lodge to do so.

I'm also curious how lodge creation will go. I'd love to start a casual one but I don't want to be forced to commit more energy than I can just to keep it running

I really wish there were some in-game effects of clans too. Like rivalries/battling. Maybe some explore options. Like finding a member of a rival clan while exploring and fighting them.

Re: what to call them: I like "alliances" much better than "clans." To me, a clan feels like basically the same thing as a pack - a close-knit family (or found family) group. It makes more sense that different packs would form alliances with each other.

Not a fan of the term "lodge" because it makes me think of a vacation resort built by humans. It's not something that wild wolves would have.

On a different note, I really like the idea of rival alliances! Purely for lore purposes I think it would be cool, even if it didn't have any gameplay effect.

I would like alliances to have some upgrading system. The alliance will have limited amount of members, let's start for lowest such as 3 members. The members of the alliance would have to bring materials to upgrade member slots, such as cave materials, let's start from 10 each (10 branches, 10 leaves, 10 rocks) then each next slot would cost 10 more than the previous slot. Maybe include some herbs, carcasses, trophies but not necessarily for member slots but other upgrades as well, that would give members some perks, such as amount of processed food/toys that each member can directly use on their wolves from the alliance daily. More ideas?

And having required materials wouldn't be enough to upgrade. To complete the upgrade, some participation from pack wolves would be required, those that would be assigned for certain role such as Builder (subject to change the name). Wolf assigned as Builder can participate in certain upgrade for progress. The upgrade would require wisdom (wolves planning how to build the upgrade) and strength (wolves building the upgrade). And the first member slot upgrade would require 500 wisdom, then 500 strength. Wolf assigned as a Builder (can assign multiple wolves, but the limit would depend on certain upgrade) can contribute in an upgrade spending the whole energy bar and 1.5 minute for each 1% of energy spent (2 hours 30 minutes for the whole energy bar). Energy spent will depend on the wolf that has the lowest energy among participating Builders. In case of full energy, wolves contribute as much wisdom as they have (for example, 2 wolves with 50 wisdom each will contribute 100 wisdom). If the energy is not full, only part of contribution is given, rounded down. And then the same with strength. Then the upgrade is completed.

I'm all for new roles for wolves, but I do not think there should be a limit on how many people can join a clan. Especially since as the devs stated this was supposed to be a social function (at least initially), I can see this leading to animosity and exclusivity among players. Because if you only start with 3 slots and have to go through a lengthy upgrade process to get more, how do you pick which 2 players to invite? Many people have made more than 2 friends on this site, so anyone not chosen would feel left out. Then they would create their own clan, which would lead to many small fractioned groups, which doesn't appear to be in line with what is intended (large groups for lots of people with shared interests).

This would also be unnecessarily unfair to new players who might not have the required resources or connections to join a preferred group right away.

Edit: I do like the suggestion of having to work for extra clan features though! Just not "be allowed to have more people."
