pronoun changes?

pronoun changes?
Posted 2020-12-11 10:42:35

hey! apologies if this is a little incoherent - i get not being able to change a wolf’s sex, given how directly that impacts gameplay, but could it be an option to change pronouns? for example - i pick names for most of my wolves based on how appearance fits characters i have in mind, often regardless of gender - or in my lead wolf’s case, i intentionally made him bio female, bc he’s based off a character who’s a trans man. it might also be nice to have alt pronoun options? ( ie they/them, it/its, xe/hir )

totally understand if not! just a suggestion

I'd support this. My lead wolf is trans too & I'd like to be able to change his pronouns to he/him, but I guess it might interfere with the family tree or something since that has to say "maternal".. but I mean. It's just biologically maternal so maybe not. who knows. anyway, support :p at least for he/him, she/her, they/them.

100% support. A lot of my wolves don't use the same pronouns 'assigned' by them being bio male or female, and honestly I would love to change their pronouns.

Support, that would always be nice since you cant sex-change the leads (but for clarifying purposes, you can sex-change any wolf thats not your lead, breeding male, or stud I believe or one thats already bred)

Definitely has my support, would love to be able to have this freedom and see variety represented like players want it to, as well as there being some pages like the herbalist main page which just use "they" by default and already don't do anything with the herbalist wolf's specific pronouns. This change could maybe be bundled with a pass on those?

I feel like it's important, especially for lore-based playstyles, to be able to have the game respect your choices in lore that way. It's a case for freedom, immersion and acceptance. The changes proposed in this thread in several really good posts (Weaselheart, Zeraki) I think describe a very solid way of implementing this that would give lore-players all the options they need in this regard, while leaving the experience of players who do not need this functionality uninterrupted. Furthermore, these pronouns are only visible to the player themself, not to anyone not looking at the wolf role information popups, and thus would not impact anyone that's not the player using the feature on their own pack.

I've personally done string editing and localization of games (that weren't initially designed to have these features) before as I am in game development and with the suggestions and mockups made in this thread, I don't think it would be that hard, especially not if you can put together an entire site like this ;) The framework for pronouns specific to a wolf('s sex) is already in place, I can't imagine it's too hard to extend.

Full support! I have a couple of trans wolves already and it gets grating seeing the flavor text gender them incorrectly.

I absolutely support this! Like another supporter said, the pronouns already need a pass for consistency, so why not improve it while they're in there? I also don't think it would be too hard to add custom pronouns via text boxes, since there's already a similar customisation in text with wolf names.

Maybe something similar to above? Except nicer and in the Wolvden style, not a 10 minute mockup haha. Hovering over the help button could provide an explanation for how it works, and possibly the example pronoun sets could also be moved into there to save on space, I only showed them here so that it was clear they would be provided.

As someone who has been studying programming for going on 5 years now, the majority of which is focused on webdev, I can confidently say that this wouldn't be particularly difficult. There's already similar precedent for the custom wolf names, and in some areas the pronouns are already based on a check for the wolf's sex, so changing that to a check for the corresponding pronoun and adding storage for individual pronouns in a wolf's table wouldn't be hard.

The main problem would be the time it takes having to go back and edit all mentions of pronouns across the site. As I've mentioned earlier, though, the site is already inconsistent as to whether pronouns are generated based on sex or the text just uses "they/them/their", so it wouldn't take much longer to add in code that gets specific custom pronouns for a wolf. Also, adding storage for pronoun data wouldn't be difficult in itself, but I'm not completely sure of the effect of editing the structure of a table for a live site - however, I expect it would be at the very least doable, and I think the effort would be worth it for the amount that it would improve the playerbase satisfaction. It would also be relevant whether adding just one store for predetermined pronoun sets or multiple for custom pronouns.

To clarify, if custom pronouns aren't achievable, I'd be perfectly happy with a variety of pronoun sets that can be chosen from a wolf's profile. This would only require one extra data storage slot and a few radio buttons on the wolf settings page, as well as a sitewide pass that would probably happen anyway. However, I personally believe that if you were to add in a pronoun system that worked separately from a wolf's sex, it wouldn't take much additional effort to add full customisation.
