pronoun changes?

Posted 2021-01-28 07:30:49 (edited)

Total support !! :0 Had no idea this thread was here, wish I'd found it sooner!!

Edit, since this has been going on for a while and I figured I'd share a little more-

First off, the amount of overwhelming support on this is so heartwarming ;v;
Second off, I now have a trans stud and two nonbinary/neo pronoun wolves. I've finally got my page up and looking the way I want it to for my current era of lore, and all I'd need is this update to feel a fully polished and immersive experience. I know a few people have mentioned that misgendering trans/NB wolves is a massive break in immersion, and I have to agree. I want my lore to feel important, and the biggest way to do that is for the source site to have this adjustable feature.
I can't wait to see this implemented, and I'm so glad that we've got this much support for it!!

...no support.
That would be unnecessary and confusing.

UPD.: It is already possible to change the sex of any (unbred) wolf. There is no need for anything else.

...Could you elaborate on that? I don't see how it could be considered unnecessary when multiple players have already expressed that it's a feature they'd really love to see, and as for it being confusing, I'm not sure how you reached that conclusion either. It would ideally be another feature in the wolf's settings page either where you can choose between a few different options using radio buttons (mutually exclusive selectors, if you don't know the term), or as I'm hoping for a few textboxes for completely custom pronouns with a help button you can hover over for a short explanation. Even if you don't personally want to use the feature, clearly other people are very interested, and you don't have to engage with it yourself if you don't want to.

Copy pasted from my thread with the same suggestion that got locked because I didn’t know this existed sjfjdjd // though I am a big fan of the wolf setting toggle that was suggested in this thread already!! owo

I'm here because I thought it would be nice to have a way to change a wolf's pronouns without necessarily changing their gender -- or even to have a gender neutral option (they/them/theirs) for certain wolves in our pack. This would mostly affect pages like Foraging and Scouting, where your wolf may be getting misgendered daily in the flavor text.

From a Lore Written Trans Male Herbalist of a friend of mine ^

Questions & Answers

Why does this matter?
Firstly, having gender neutral and trans representation is important. Though we're allowed to physically change our wolves' gender (which is lovely, btw) we don't have the option to allow them to be referred to by gender neutral terms.

How would this be implemented?
There's a couple ways I could see this being added.

1. Gender-Neutral Toggle; an account option that changes all of the flavor text for your wolves into gender-neutral ones.

2. A Pronoun Toggle in your wolf's settings, right above or right below where you can choose what Role your wolf is in the pack. Again -- This wouldn't change the overall gender of the wolf, only the pronouns that the game will refer to them as.

Why not just buy a sex changer?
Firstly, a sex changer wouldn't allow your wolves to be gender-neutral, only switching between he & she. Secondly, having to pay (especially in premium currency) to not be misgendered is kinda.... not lovely. Thirdly, I know some players consider switching their genders just making them cis of the opposite gender, rather than trans like they have headcanon'd or written in their lore.

There aren't any trans/gender-neutral wolves IRL.
It's a good thing this isn't IRL, then C;
Besides, Wolvden has plenty of other mechanics that aren't exactly considered realistic.

Wonderfully said @Ghostie. I think it's also important to remember that something being necessary to functional gameplay is not the same as being necessary for experience. Sure, you can play the game without pronoun selection -- but you can also play the game without same-sex pairbonding, which has been offered to us by the devs for roleplay, immersion and inclusion purposes.

If trans/nb wolves aren't something you want to experience in your own pack, that's completely fine - but I'm really excited about the idea, and I think how many other people are here offering more suggestions and support shows that it could and should be considered.

Support! I left a comment on the locked thread but forgot to put one here-- this would be useful for a few wolves in my pack already, and generally be a rlly nice inclusive feature that would have little to no impact on people who didn't want to use it!

for the people probably saying "bUt iT ISnt ReALiStIC"

...sex changers, going out and spending energy for no reason, currency in the wild, cures to suddenly treat your wolf of deadly diseases, random plants that make them want to do the do with eachother and talking animals are?
come on now

anyways i support this fully .v.

I have a question about this - How would breeding males be affected by this? You get notifications such as "breeding request accepted between breeding male and your wolf".

If we're talking about trans and nb wolves, it seems a bit weird to have pop up boxes calling them breeding males, No hate tho! Just curious to see how this would be handled? Would they be called breeding females/wolves?

(hope I worded this alright)

Probably just breeding wolves or studs! Or perhaps by the chosen title you assign to the wolf alongside alpha (such as beta/mate/companion)!

Big support!  And I also support the suggestion of changing terms such as breeding males to something more neutral.  I don’t think pronoun changing would be confusing as there exist symbols to denote the wolves’ breeding roles (mars symbol, flame for heats).
