The smell of snakes, blood, and ash invades your senses as you approach the dark entrance. Mask pulled over your nose, leaving just cold eyes to gaze at the guards before you. A few minutes later and you're pacing down a dark hallway, the calls of merpeople in pools, jeering half-wolves surrounded by their pack, avians crowing and fluttering all following your steps. A heavy knocker on the door before you and it's pushed open soon enough.

A dimly lit room, desk tucked against a wall, wide window overlooking the crowd and activity below. A pool taking over half the room. Clearing your throat awkwardly, something - someone - in the pool moves. Snake's tail shifting beneath the dim water before a feminine face turns to look, slit eyes and all angles.

"Perfect." The Naga hissed, a wave towards someone near the walls and a chair is brought forward, a small tray with drinks and various food upon it.

"I have a job for you."

The Beginning

It had been two days since The Underground Queen had summoned you. But this time, there's a group of people with you, some clutching a parcel in their hands, some appearing empty-handed.

The Queen had required you prove loyalty to her, with some form of gift. You hadn't a clue what the others must have brought, necklaces, weapons, documents... but they all seemed fairly sure of themselves.

Finally, an avian steps forward, grey wings tucked close to their body and a quiet, demure posture.

"Whisper will see you now."

Préachán stepped forward, hood pulled up, anything to withhold his appearance from the general public. Having already gone over the room to see what valuables there was, he had spent a majority of his time waiting, leaning on a wall. He had of course brought a gift. A valuable one, a fine golden goblet, set with emeralds, and the craftmanship was excellent. A lucky steal, from a rich local, who was none the wiser.

He would be polite, at least in front of the queen. He usually was ... less so, but this matter seemed important, and he was curious to know two things. One, how had she found him? Two, what did she want?

"Good day. Or night, or ... whatever it is." He said, with a shrug, and a grin, still not removing the hood. "I would very much like to know one thing, and that is, how did you find me?" He carried on, examining the goblet in his hand, before leaning on the wall, calmly breathing in. "Is there dinner? I mean, what you offered was decent but... I prefer my meals fresh." He laughed, but it was not intended to be a joke.

The witch fluttered their wings slightly as they walked, the cloak surrounding them and the mask on their face blocking out any features. The only things showing were their wings, and their eyes. If they wanted to, they could do some sort of spell to morph their features. But being so guarded makes one feel... powerful in a way. They held their gift in their hands, an assortment of charms and potions wrapped up in leather and tied with string. Styx rolled their eyes as one of their companions spoke quite rudely to the naga, their face contorting in disgust under their obsidian mask. Their smooth, but cold and indifferent voice rang out. "Don't you think you should be a bit more.. eloquent?" The moth asked, blank white eyes staring into his soul.

Their head tilted, but they didn't wait for his answer. Instead turning to the being they had come here to speak with, folding their arm across their chest and dipping in a gentle bow. Styx held out their gift to the woman, the rings on their slightly furry hands glinting and covered with engravings, before stepping back once the gift was taken from their hands. They examined the office, or should they say pool, without moving their head so they gave the impression of continuing to look at 'Whisper'. They wouldn't lie, they didn't take this woman seriously. And they wouldn't be calling her queen anytime soon, they came here for one thing and one thing only.

But they could pretend they found the naga fascinating, at least for now. Pretend they believed she was their only possible savior, if it meant they could keep their family safe. They clasped their hands tightly under their cloak, taking a silent deep breath. This will be over soon.

A few others had presented their gifts. Ichabod took this moment to bring his up. He peeled himself away from the dark corner he had tucked himself away in, striding confidently in the dark, his wind powers allowing his feet to almost glide across the ground. There had been a lot to watch as the room filled. Plenty of creatures here had names whispered in awe, and plenty that he didn't plan on looking for a fight with. His green eyes scanned the darkness, his features naturally hidden by the barely-there black feathers of his shrike mask. He parked himself close enough to Whisper to talk to her without getting too close to the others that were already there. Small winds circled around him as a way of letting him know if anyone got too close for comfort. Truthfully, Ichabod wasn't quite sure still why he was called here. He wasn't the most impressive creature of his kind. He did, however, bring a gift that he was proud of.

Ichabod carried a relatively small parcel. It was a lightly colored animal hide, tied into a neat square by twine. With a quick movement, he lowered the parcel down and pulled off the twine with his feet. The animal hide shifted in the grasp of his feathers revealing a long, eight inch talon. It was a harpy talon. Not his own, naturally, but from one mixed with a much larger bird of prey: an eagle.

"One of my most impressive battle trophies," Ichabod explained, holding it out, "From a previous member of my community who enjoyed harming the others a little too much. He made the mistake of entering in my territory." It had been a hard fight to manage, and one he had to be strategic about. As part shrike, he didn't have all the natural weapons that helped larger predatory harpies… but shrikes weren't given the nickname "butcher birds" for no reason.

Sigris hung back behind the… rather strange group of people, opting to go last and using the opportunity to evaluate the others more thoroughly. She wore her black fur cloak, as always; its ends trailing on the ground behind her whenever she walked. Her long black hair hung loose around her face, not feeling the need to hide her appearance, unlike the others. This place, The Dark, was much darker than she anticipated. Hah, go figure. Then again, only ever seeing it through the eyes of naturally nocturnal animals made it a more stark contrast than through her own. Seeing the creatures here in person was also another matter. The once towering and imposing giants that wandered these streets now brought low, turning into smaller and less menacing figures that quickly rushed around too and fro. It provided an almost comical situation for her, strangely. She felt more at ease than expected when she first received the summons to come here, venturing in person for the first time to this dismal place. The once overwhelming and prominent scents, sounds, and sights warning of constant danger or interest now nonexistent, allowing her to calmly eye the going ons even if she at times felt inhibited at her unawareness in her own body.

Her turn now up, she stepped forward toward the pool, not paying any mind to small discussions going on. With the Whisperers attention turned toward her, she pulled out a bundle of neatly rolled up papers, wrapped in a tied piece of twine.
"Information on some higher ups in the city. Only small pieces on select people mind you.." She said, giving a small chuckle. "But enough to prove useful if utilized properly." She said matter of factly as she turned away, making her way to the back of the group again, where she could keep all of them in her sights.

test test - don't mind me

~> Erytha <~

The group filed in slowly enough, dark eyes following their path. With a small sigh, Erytha pulled their tail beneath themselves, half coiled, half lazing in the cool water. They brought gifts in, some with specific requests, others tasked to choose.

A goblet, from the vampire. Shifter as well, a dark crow, only able to bare the sunlight while feathered. Mediocre but good enough.
Charms, potions. Magical things. The Great Witch of the Underground, covered with strange spells and marks unknown to even the Naga.
A trophy from the Harpy, an eagle harpy's talon. Not useful but a good show of ability. Perhaps the labs could find some use for it.... or she would simply display it in her main office.
Information from the cat burglar. Could be useful, as they claimed. Good enough as well, specific and precise but still very informative.

"I'm sure you've all heard the saying, a magician never reveals their secrets. I may not be a magician but... the sentiment still stands, hmm? As for food... it's not my responsibility to dictate what you eat. If you cannot handle that small amount of responsibility alone, you are most certainly not prepared for what I am about to ask of you."

A wave of her hand, as if clearing the subject.
"You all know of how those above treat us. Forced to perform and parade for their money and twisted amusement. If you haven't brushed against that kind of danger, I'd be... quite surprised."
Another wave of her hand, a gesture to come forward, and a few lurking around the walls of the den brought chairs forward before a quiet word and they left.

"What a gathering. A Witch, pursued by both those in the Dark and those above. A cat burglar, quite literally. A vampire stuck in the dark, saved by feathers and flight. A harpy working only to their own wishes. Some with.... more personal reasons to join this group..." Her slitted eyes caught on the moth humanoid. Styx Lepidoptera. It had taken a lot of time and money to dig up what she needed. But... provided they joined the group, their problem would be dealt with, and that expense would be worth it.. Already there were people looking but with the range of expertise Styx could provide? Efforts could be doubled, tripled. Maybe even more. "...and some with more basic motivation." They continued, barely a breath later but just long enough for their eyes to catch on the almost blinding pupils.

"It's simple enough. I employ you to carry out what I need done. Sorting out smaller gangs, disposing of unneeded and unwanted individuals, finding information. Sometimes we take care of less fortunate people and see them off to better homes. Most often, I've been arranging times to remove those stuck above from human.... 'care' to either bring below or find a safe house above."

A thin smile, not much more than a small quirk of their lips.

"Should you accept... Well. I doubt many of you are in a position to decline what I can offer in exchange for your services." The sound of snake scale against the rough floor disturbed the quiet room as Erytha moved to her desk, a small book pulled from the dark of the drawers.

"Money, lodging, protection. Some personal wants may be seen to as well, lost items, lost family members. Revenge for dead family or friends. Depends on how well you do. Any questions? If not,"

They set the book down on the desk and a pen next to it. A quick glance to the harpy's talons and they set a low bowl of ink next to the book as well, reaching behind their desk to find it.

"Sign here. Your alias, name, or simply a signature of some kind. It's only for who or what I'll be needing to get lodging for, this deal will not go down on paper. Should you wish to be released from the deal... we can discuss that later."

Préachán turned, when adressed. "So you are telling me this is not the summoning for the position as the queen's new speech writer? I must have misunderstood. What a shame. I, who had such high hopes about gaining that position." His tone was mocking, even if only slightly.

When the queen spoke, efficiently giving his secret away, he tensed up, suddenly defensive. "I do not approve of you so freely sharing secrets that some of us may not desire to share.'' He growled, arms crossed over his chest, and no longer careless. The shifter bit was something he very much liked to keep private, for good reason. It was part of his survival, which mattered more to him than anything else.

"Let me get this straight, you just exposed me, to this group of... creatures, and even a  human and now you want my help?!" He continued, tone low and angry, offended. He pushed the hood down, to make his expression perfectly visible, all the while revealing himself more.
Even though, the offer was extremely tempting, Préachán was not going to be the first to sign, not after that comment about feathers and flight. Granted, he was proud to be able to shift to another shape, but that did not mean he wanted these strangers to know that he could.

Sigris took the time to inspect the dimly lit room and her surroundings, while passively listening to the Naga speak. A Witch. Interesting. Cat burglar?! She thought disdainfully at the rather inelegant summary of her capabilities. Giving an irritated sniff, she resumed her passing gaze around the cavern. A vampire, and possible shifter? And a harpy, no surprise there.

She was listening more closely to the following parts, gears turning in her head as she thought over what some of these 'tasks' might entail when the vampire spoke up. His comment at a human being here startled her, as she quickly ripped her head around with a pointed glare. The examination of the place forgotten.
How the hell did he know?! Her eyes narrowing with her mouth turned in a sneer. But inwardly she was rather caught off guard.
Is it really so easy for them to be able to tell human from non-humans?
The fact that all the creatures in this place might be able to instinctively tell she was human would be a very big problem for her; And why she had never come here until now, it was her biggest fear.
Caught in a limbo of not belonging in either world. Having to hide her true self from people who would abuse and shun her if they knew. Or living with the creatures, who would never accept her despite her powers, deeming her as another human to be feared and hated.
That begged the question. Why even bother with any of this? Why work to change a world that would label her as an outcast either way?
Her eyes fell to the floor as she mulled it over. After a small while of thinking, She steeled her gaze, straightened herself in an upright position and strode forward.
Coming up to the desk, she quickly scrawled her name on the paper. With a final flourish of the pen, she placed it down and turned back toward the naga.
"I could say that I'm doing this for the greater good, to help out the less fortunate. But I'd be lying…" she said pointedly.
"I'm doing this because I can't stand to see the powerful abusing their privilege. Of of seeing ones who do harm because of their own ignorance and prejudice. If I can drag them down, I will." She stated sharply, turning her gaze toward the vampire, meeting his eyes before turning, grabbing her fur cloak and walking over to the row of seats. Waiting for the others to decide.

If she had to choose which world to live in, it would be the one who only hated out of (very understandable) fear rather than superiority.

~> Erytha <~

"I will share the information that I deem necessary. Would you truly want to work with a creature stuck to the underground with what you believe to have no way to be above? I will not let the rest of this group be taken down by someone unwilling to share information. Rather unfortunately for you... it's becoming more and more apparent that I would not need your skills. After all, that human can control a large manner of felines. Their information is worth much more than your goblet and I would much rather spend my resources on them." Erytha levelled a blank gaze at the shifter, small slips of paper already taken away to their personal area, away from where anyone could get in.

"Perhaps if I was to examine it later, there may be more than a pretty appearance but.... unlikely, I'd imagine. If you truly believe walking away would be the better option.... go."

A second passed.

"Anyone else or can we move on?" The Naga hissed.

Sigris strode forward, mouth set and determined. A cold grin, full of entirely too many needle-like teeth, crossed Erytha's face as the impudent human stalked over to the chairs and claimed one as her own, setting coat and herself down onto it. The speech was almost amusing but if she believed she could help... well, it was a good motivator if nothing else.

The witch laughed coldly at the vampire, lips peeling back under their mask. "You're quite.. bold, for a young one." It seemed as though 'bold' was just a censored version of what they actually wanted to say. Their unnerving eyes stared him down for a few moments before they shook their head, another, much smaller, chuckle rumbling from their chest. Styx watched him silently as he was deliberately rude to Erytha, an eyebrow raising. How strange.. he believes he can talk like that and it will have no consequences. Just proves his immaturity from youth. They pondered, fingers playing with one of their rings gently.

They watched as the human stormed forwards, almost surprising them with her tenacity. But, fortunately, she had encounters with more humans than they could count. What would make this one different? And why did this young one want to help the creatures of the underground. Ah, there it is.. to take the rich from power. A false sense of doing the world a favor. The rich will be taken down, but then more will replace them. No matter what social status they were before, they all end up the same. The moth thought, smirking slightly to themself. This should be.. entertaining. Their smirk only grew as the naga berated the young vampire, but the conversation barely interested them.

They immediately stepped forwards after the spy moved back to the chairs, picking up the quill and looking up at the snake. "If you break your promise to me, I will not hesitate to break mine to you. They are everything to me." They whispered calmly, while still getting the point across. They dipped the writing utensil into the ink, and delicately signed one of their aliases, 'Bewitcher', in sloping and graceful letters. This movement revealed the paint and ink decorating their slightly furry skin, different runes scattered along the sides of their fingers. Styx looked back up at the naga for a moment, dropping the quill and making their way to the chair nearest to the feline manipulator. They turned their head to look at the woman, holding their hand out. "Pleasure to meet you, you are....?" They figured if they were to be in a contract alongside these beings they should try to get to know at least one of them.
