Feeding & Care

We've heard your feedback with regards to Wolvden's feeding and care system, and we'd like to make some changes.  We have had some ideas that we would like to get your opinions on.

Generally speaking, we're looking to take a bit of the tedium out of the game so that you can actually focus on the more fun aspects of playing - exploring, hunting, battling, breeding, etc.

Processing

First of all, in order to streamline the feeding and playing functionality we are considering a new feature called "Processing".  This would add a panel where you can select which carcasses or amusement items that you want to Process and turn them into Meat Chunks, and a potential new item called "Toy".  This would give just one single item type to use, so instead of jumping from carcass to carcass to feed your wolves, you stick to the single item stack to feed.

We could also make Processing a little fun, with random drops of other items - crafting items such as bones, feathers, perhaps even rarely you could gain a pelt or one of the trophies you can get from battling (depending on the carcass).

Feed All Play All

Feeding and playing for all players would be adjusted to be more similar to how the current Feed All Play All tool is now. Using items from the Meat Chunks/Toys from Processing, the tool would be enabled on a cave level - enabling you to feed all or play with all wolves in a single cave. You'd still be able to feed and play with wolves individually from their pages and from the item page, but this would be a bit quicker.

How would this work exactly?

You would have access to a new Processing panel, which would display all of your carcasses and amusement items in a list not dissimilar from the Raccoon Wares item listing.  You can choose exactly which items you want, and click a button to Process them.

A case scenario might be:
Your Items:
  • 1x Bighorn Sheep Ewe Carcass - 12 uses, rots in 3 days
  • 1x Beaver Carcass - 8 uses, rots in 5 days
  • 1x Pronghorn Doe Carcass - 10 uses, rots in 5 days
  • 1x Doe Carcass - 12 uses, rots in 6 days
  • 1x Seal Carcass - 15 uses, rots in 6 days
  • 2x Mule Deer Carcass - 12 uses each, rots in 8 days
Process into:
  • 1x Meat Chunks - 12 uses, rots in 3 days
  • 1x Meat Chunks - 18 uses, rots in 5 days
  • 1x Meat Chunks - 27 uses, rots in 6 days
  • 1x Meat Chunks - 24 uses each, rots in 8 days

Carcass and Amusement items would lose their ability to be fed/played with, so that things like FAPA would no longer drain your Acorns - everything would need to be processed by hand selection.

Additionally, we would likely add a "Shred" option which allows you to split your Meat Chunks into portions that you can bury, trade, etc.

What about people who paid for FAPA?

We would turn the existing purchases of FAPA into an even more convenient/tailored tool which would allow passive feeding/playing.  As long as you are able to continue collecting and processing the food and amusement items that you need, your pack is automatically cared for when you rollover and you would never have to think about it.

We are also considering additional settings for paid FAPA, including setting the level at which your wolves are fed to/played with - so if you want to keep your wolves at 60% Hunger/Mood then the tool will stop there and more evenly distribute your food and toys.  This would also be on a cave level, so your favourite wolves could be kept topped up to 100% while your workers/less concerned wolves can be left at 50% - or however you'd like to tailor your feeding and playing.

I love this idea! I've seen a handful of times where people are devastated when they accidentally FAPA and use a trophy (like a red Fox tail), and I know that some people dread rolling over/playing bc it can get so tedious to feed and play with each Wolf, which leads to neglecting them, and then having to pay to get them back…
This would be a great way to help with all of that!

I love the processing/Shredding! I would actually suggest a mini little quest since Its a pretty major change and may confuse a few users.

FAPA Yes customising caves woohoo! Adding onto
"so if you want to keep your wolves at 60% Hunger/Mood then the tool will stop there and more evenly distribute your food and toys"

If we could do this on a cave level? Glorious! No more needing to throw my fodder pups at a very bottom den so I don't accidently feed them, Assuming there's still a way to feed wolves via push of the button and It isn't auto every RO we could customise caves  so say, My NBW T3's could be fed to 100/100 where my Fodder pups could stay at 20/20 :D

(Side note I feel like the auto nesting also needs a look at? It shouldn't be days but instead total wolves, say 420GC is 1000 wolves)

I really like all this, but I'm not so sure about putting all meat chunks that rot the same day automatically into one item. While the "shred" option would likely be used for this, I personally would like the option to choose while processing if the food items will be put together into one or processed individually.
Edit: as others have now mentioned, being able to leave out at least one use of an item would be really important for trophy items!

This is fantastic! I am disabled and going to be working a day job soon, and this will help me keep playing wolvden without being burned out by tedious tasks when I have less time & energy to devote to the game. Very excited about this y'all, thank you so much!

Hm, I think if we did processing, I would need the item drop thing to make it interesting for me.

I don't mind jumping from carcass to carcass, but the item drop thing could make it fun to process!

The processing feature sounds very good and convenient, but the major downside is that you have made no mention of being able to select how many uses of the items to process. For amusement items, the majority of which are crafting items, many users intentionally leave one use on all of these so that they can be used for crafting. A process feature for toys would not be very useful if it couldn't allow you to decide how many uses you wanted to consume.

Processing would allow making feeding and playing more efficient, but it would also remove some charm from the game, so I'm hesitant about it in concept. I know I sometimes feed certain things to certain wolves for lore or roleplaying reasons, e.g. giving a beloved wolf a rare and tasty carcass on their last day alive, etc. I'm a little torn between the practicality and the charm. Perhaps a system of designating which items, or uses thereof, are available for use as food or toys, and then FAPA or manual feeding/playing selects automatically from this list? E.g. instead of 'processing', it could be called 'add to food / toy pile', or something similar, and only items in that 'pile' could be played with or fed from.

Additional settings for paid FAPA are something I have been wanting intensely for a long time. I used to buy FAPA when my pack was smaller, but I now have entire caves I do not feed, or variably feed, and additionally there are many amusement items I want to reduce to 1 use rather than consuming completely. My pack is large now and feeding and playing with my wolves takes around 10- 20 minutes daily, which is a lot. I would love to be able to use FAPA again. Customisation options for FAPA that would help: select caves, select feed / play threshold by cave, create userlist of items to be consumed by FAPA (less relevant if you do implement processing), exclude specific wolves from FAPA.

The suggested change for Feed/Play feels slightly confusing, and like it will take additional steps for both the average player, as well as those with FAPA.  I read through it, and I understand the suggestion, but it feels like an overly complicated change to the mechanics by completely overhauling how these items work.

Personally, I would rather see "feed from stack" or "play from stack" implemented in the hoard over this suggestion, as that would not change large portions of the mechanics, but would still allow players easier ways to manage large amounts of wolves, and wouldn't change the function of FAPA for those who paid for it.

However, if this option is the only one being considered for making feeding & playing easier for all players, this would be something I can adjust to.

I'm all in, to be honest! As long as the menu will be convenient to use on both mobile and PC, that would streamline the feeding process greatly. I'm particularly fond of the idea that acorns would no longer be used by FAPA, because I've been wondering way too many times where all my existing acorns went.

I'm also satisfied with what was said about FAPA feature, sounds pretty fair considering it's a relatively cheap tool.
