Development Update #6.1

Posted 2021-02-12 11:12:50 (edited)

Why was hunting nerfed when it was already hard enough? Please put it back to what it was. I like the percentages that were added, but as is clear by the number of people struggling to hunt after these changes, it would be wise to adjust the system for those who do not strive for high stats. This tweak harms newer players, putting emphasis on stat gain which many players already don't care about.

Ive been waiting to say anything, but I also am a user having extreme difficulty successfully hunting anything larger than a Small, and even that has been difficult. Both of my parties are 100/100 synergy/proficiency. Most of the wolves on these parties are 300, if not 400+ Overall stats. I’m in a ‘medium’ biome, the Coniferous Forest, and am sorely disappointed that it’s this difficult. I had been wanting to move to the Taiga or the Tundra as my main homestay, but after this I dont think thatd be wise.

I love being able to see percentages. I dont love that it feels like my team, which I Thought was a decently stated team, is suddenly struggling to even bring me back a porcupine.

Xavier, 300 total stats is very low. There are some level 1 nbws that are close to that. I agree hunting is a LITTLE bit too difficult, but using 300 stat wolves as an argument is pretty bad.

Real question to those of you saying it's a blow to people not interested in stat breeding... if there is no reward for good stats besides having a high number beside your wolf, what is the point?

Wolves without any proficiency/synergy now have a higher chance of bringing in prey now, which if anything helps out new players more rather than harms them. From a gameplay standpoint, it makes sense that lower skilled wolves should need to stay in safer biomes and hunt smaller prey. Obviously this part is opinion but if the general feeling is "stats shouldn't affect hunting" then that seems like a pretty major change in the game being requested.

Editing to add some more context: I'm new to Wolvden but used to play Lioden a long time ago. I am keeping my pack relatively small and focusing almost exclusively on bringing in critter/small prey until my wolves level up and I am remaining in the starter biomes for now. This is down to personal preference, but I like the idea that there are harder biomes that I will have to work towards being able to survive in. And even may have to play strategically by moving back to easier biomes for fall/winter to survive.

I don't want people's playstyles punished but either stats should matter or they should be removed.

The problem with putting so much emphasis on stats is that it harms specific playstyles which do not care about stats. Not everyone should be forced into one playstyle, not everyone should be forced into one biome. The fact that you can't move biomes without suffering greatly already is a problem. I wanted to move to riparian woodland, my dream biome, because it reminds me of my home- and yet was forced to grumpily move to rainforest because I needed more stats. It's just annoying to be forced to have stats to be in certain places, especially for lore players, and the hunting update only roundhouse kicks certain playstyles ever further.

@finnfinite, after looking at my teams, most are 450-500+, with newest members being the 300s. So to have a team that’s 4 out of 5 wolves 450+ stats being made to fail by a single 300 stat wolf, that is still really harsh. And i’m not in a ‘Hard’ biome. Just a ‘Medium.’ Which, imo, means ‘wolves with better starting stats than the base 200.’

Also, I’d love to see these nbws that are that high. The best nbws ive found are ~250 :c

@greahound⚡ The trouble is, though, that by making stats matter less you still force those who want more of a challenge into a different playstyle though. The reason the biomes have different difficulty levels is to respect that stats don't matter to everyone.

Let's assume for a moment that they do revert to a system where stats have less of an impact on hunting. What do you propose for those players who are looking for a challenge? One of the things I am preferring about this game over Lioden (at least when I played it, it may have changed since then) is that there does seem to be at least some amount of thought required about which wolves hunt together, which ones you place in which roles, etc. When this hunting change was announced I was genuinely excited, and it sounds like it will create more of a sense of progression over generations.

This sounds like a real problem of preference and I can't think of a different way to cater to both playstyles that isn't already addressed by the different biomes and the increasing difficulty of larger prey.

Isn't the EXP the problem then?
Let me explain. If you want to have better stats wolves you need to level them up. In order to do so you need a certain amount of EXP. You gain very little EXP in starter biomes, so they level up slowly. If you move to the harder biome then BAMF, now they can't bring back almost anything and your pack is on the brink of starvation. That's the main issue for me o_<

There are many hunting tweaks already suggested in game development. I suggest looking at those, as this topic is already often complained about, so debating it further would just be me repeating the points that all those other threads have already made.

Edit: Also, ditto above!

@greahound⚡ I will check again but last I saw, the main suggestions were just to make hunting work more like it used to. I have not seen any suggestions for something else.
