Reduced Reliance on RNG (from the perspective of a game maker)

Posted 2022-02-01 08:59:15 (edited)
The level of RNG WD has implemented makes it so hard for new players to pick up the game, especially when some prefer not to rely on others. It's present in every feature of WD and makes playing much more complicated and difficult than it needs to be. It's poor game development when your experienced players are telling you that their level 20 wolves are losing to Level 5 enemies, or that their 100% synergy no personality clash hunting parties have come up empty every time they go out, or full proficiency herbalist is barely bringing anything back from forage. What's the point of putting in effort for stat increases or progression when the result is the same as when we started? Its unrewarding and disheartening. We are but simple creatures of habit to like to be rewarded for the effort we put into something.

100% Support for an lessening the reliance of RNG.

THIS THIS THIS

I stated this before when players were having trouble getting lunar essence during lunar events. You can't just have it be completely RNG. And there's a difference between having some sort of guarantee after X number of rolls and completely getting rid of the RNG. I am not and did not suggest to get rid of the RNG. It made players beyond frustrated and the devs just didn't seem to get it. You can't only have random because then sometimes you will never get what you need.

So, I got to the point of practically abandoning the game due to the RNG system.

It's just too frustrating for me. I currently log in only during lunar event to get applicators but even that seems more and more like a chore each event.
I'm done with getting beaten up by enemies 13 levels below mine. Or needing to stack on healing salves each month to just get by. Or battling being so much energy-depended that once you drop to 0% energy you're practically done. And resting during battle does nothing in terms of restoring energy.

If there's no change in the near future I really don't see myself playing anymore. It's been more than a year since my first post here in this topic. And sadly nothing changed for the better.

I think one big problem currently is that the game doesn't feel very rewarding to many, or even tiring when they invest a lot of time, and RNG is a big factor.

For one, fights. As has been said, repeatedly losing to low level enemies with a lvl 20 wolves is just not great. Even with a LB wolf, it's very possible to lose to a low lvl enemy who gets in an early bleed, which is bizarre to have happen repeatedly. Or to have to spend lucky feet.

I also feel it doesn't get taken into account that many people have busy lives. Finding enough LE+doing all my Lunar battles in summer and winter is still very doable... if WD is by biggest commitment of the day. But this is not realistic for most, or ends up becoming exhausting. I've literally lost sleep a number of times trying to get enough LE in winter, even despite spending a lot of time on here regardless on whether it was a work day.

Also role stat breeding is already extremely slow and difficult even without bad RNG, so when that gets added, it just... reduced one's enthusiasm.

I actually found all this far less frustrating as a new player. But eventually upon realizing you can do nothing to improve this despite however much effort you put in, it just... doesn't feel very rewarding. If the game isn't one's number one priority which for many is just not possible even if they wanted, it's very hard to meet even basic goals?

Support,

Alot of my issues with Wolvden can be summerised like this: Most rewarding things in the game, recipies, trophies, hunting and Lunar event are SO HEAVILY RNG based that while yes stats will make hunting easier it feels like an attempt to force high stat gameplay and if you didn't stock up on healing salves before a lunar event? Tough . Over half the encounters are battles so you will be getting less LT.

NOTE: I don't mind stat gameplay, I have a issue with it being an issue in starting areas, harder areas being easier with stats is fine but why call starting areas 'easy' if there's still stats at play. My hunters are only 43% on large hunts most the time but I hunt them constantly to stock up food and RNG feels a bit against the players.

Don't get me started on recipes. I have had LESS THAN TEN drop for me even if I am specficlly going for the enocounters that can drop them. I think I have only had one or two non-acorn/bone recipe drop from explore. That's not rewarding, it just puts me off even trying to get recipies and it feels demoralizing to rollover most days for the RNG to make it feel like a chore because it's weeks before anything does drop.

Support.

You can also see it in cases where instead of investing time into developing a strong herbalist, due to the RNG involved in gathering herbs, players instead create a meta of getting "easy" diseases in order to prevent the more difficult ones.

Is this why people advertise they're buying sick wolves? Herbalist could be made more interesting, but I never worried about any disease being too hard to treat.

When WD was released, it was mentioned it would be more difficult than LD.

I wasnt bothered by this fact.  There is nothing wrong with a measure of difficulty.  Having nice things requires effort. It should take effort to hunt, to find toys, to breed marks/bases, keep wolves alive, to obtain goals in events for special items.  But I quickly found it wasnt just the RNG issues as the OP stated, it was how expensive the game was.

I am a paying customer.  I am also a casual customer.  I have a full time job and I dont mind supporting a web based game.  I dont mind buying a few items in sales using special game currency, but not at hyper-inflated prices.

I left WD hoping things would get a bit better down the line.  But when i came back, I found nothing had really changed.

I recently purchased 40GC package and see what I could get for it.  After taking a look at the grove, I was not impressed with the purchasing power of my GCs, but I bought them anyway because I really wanted to update my Alpha.  Because I had I logged on during the lunar event and having a few days off, I decided to spend my time farming hard core to get a few things from the Lunar event.  (Way harder than a normal person should be required to farm to get a digital change to a base on an imaginary wolf)  After struggling with the day/night time system, I finally managed to get a base app and skin app on the last day of the event.

The 40GC I bought with real money did not go far.  The over inflated prices in the Sales really shows how the issue after a year and a half has not improved.  40GC got me two marking removers, an eye app and a nose app.  And not even the ones I really wanted for my wolf.  In the end I felt exhausted and still I am not happy with my lead wolf.  Do I want to buy more GC so I can get the marking apps and eye apps I wanted? Nope.

So my conclusions after coming back to WD after a year and a half of launch is this:

WD has over valued its currency and has caused a hyperinflated in game economy.  After a year and a half, the game is still in the same state it was at launch.  Attracting new players does not seem a priority, especially casuals (Who may or may not be paying customers).  Relying heavily on RNG to reward customers has proven detrimental over the long term in many games, WD is not immune.  Over control of customer enjoyment seems to be the current model with events as well as general gameplay. (Think Netflix)

WD can consider this a personal attack or constructive criticism.  Its their choice.  However, there are many who agree that the current system needs a review or an overhaul.  What WD artists have created is amazing, its beyond praiseworthy.  Devs, consider some of the suggestions to the gameplay though, maybe even implement them. and there will very likely be a a notable injection of new players and a stimulation to the in game economy, not to mention to the pocketbook of the site owners.

Thats my two cents.  Might keep logging in for events, but maybe not.  Maybe be back in a year and a half.

@Mustang

I agree with everything you said. There are players that when there are people like us complaining about the difficulty of the game will tell us "It rewards active players, just be active lol, stop complaining" and other sayings that mention anything got to do with "Just be active". As an active player, I can say that I rarely ever get rewarded for my grinding and efforts, inflation in prices in TC is incredibly infuriating because prices keep getting higher and higher, and oftentimes, other players taking advantage of needed items like food and amusement by selling them with very high prices for a little number of items.

>Be me lvl 17 wolf at 40 health
>Encounter 6 lvl Lunar Puma
>Ok clearly I can easily best them and get LT
>TFW when an enemy 11 levels below you has higher agility stats than you
>Even tho the dice days I have an agility advantage
>6 level puma gives me bleed 3 moves in
>Eats my hp harder than a level 20 bear
>Dice doesn't even show what I rolled for damage
>Loses to the fucking 11 level under me bitch

How the fuck is this fair? In other rpg games you don't just have a level 17 wizard or something die to a level 6 rat
