Community Update #114

As a Native American (Ute), I'd like the blue jay feather decor to stay as is.
I'd like to be able to express some part of Native culture instead of it being hidden because non Natives take offense to it.

As for the poll, why not both? Redesign the original blue jay decor to be on the neck or somewhere else on the fur as to not infringe upon anyone's culture, and also add a blue jay necklace decor.

Edit: I have seen a lot of comments from people of Native descent who would like to see the decor remain unchanged, and I believe it's important to listen to those voices.

They aren't going to leave it as is. I'm honestly surprised it lasted this long while Hubert the bears art was changed years ago.

I personally like the necklace but it seems neck feathers are winning. Either way I'm happy. I just love necklaces lol

Edit: I am not of native descent and my opinion isn't important in this discussion. I would have no problems with keeping the decor the same. But it isn't up to me. I'm just going with the flow of whatever happens :)

Yep, they'll change it regardless of any Indigenous person's opinion.

Sucks. I liked expressing myself with the current Blue Jay Feather decor. I'm tired of having my culture hidden, oppressed, and viewed as "offensive".

I sincerely hope the developers have a change of heart.

Why couldn't people just leave the Blue Jay Feather Decor as it was? It was fine as is.

Herbert's outfit was also very non-offensive to several of us indigenous and indigenous decent players. We were sad then, we're sad now too. Throwing in my support with Bobtail that we, the indigenous peoples who enjoy having representation of our culture in the media we consume, would like the feather to remain the same (or at least, with the updated, sleeker design that was being worked on earlier today).

The ear feather is being redesigned because it "infringes upon native culture"? I feel this excuse does not justify the redesign and is a petty attempt to feed " culture appropriation". The native Americans were and are a strong people and culture that deserve to be represented, so that they know they are celebrated in even the simplest of ways. I feel the item should stay unedited.

are you guys absolutely sure you cant fix the feather?
it confuses me how the problem would be fixed if it got new art, if the original new art didnt work. wouldnt it still just be broken? (xylax have you talked to a programmer about the issue?)

ive also noticed a lot of points from natives (like those above) that they Want this decor, im european american so i cant speak on it but i think its worth your time to listen to those voices and try to fix the decor to keep it as it is. the original new art looked very good and it'd be a shame to just discard it.

Thank you everyone, I and many other Indigenous folks appreciate your support. It is important for us to be able to express ourselves, even if it is in a silly little wolf game. Thank you.

Just throwing it out there that feathers have been used as decorations in several cultures across the globe. I personally fail to see how putting a singular feather behind one's ear is offensive to one specific culture. Especially when we're talking about wolves out in the wild, where the most natural decorations would be just picking up feathers or flowers or whatever else and sticking them to their fur (since... y'know... wolves don't have hands to make accessories.)

I'd also like to voice support for allowing representation of various cultures (not just Native), instead of suppressing them out of fear of being offensive. You can't avoid upsetting people 100% of the time--someone will always be bothered by something, just due to varying perspectives and disagreements. I see no gain in suppressing a culture just because some in the community think it's offensive to represent it, when clearly others don't.

My vote would be to keep the current feather placement, but also add one or both of the poll options as separate items. Since that's not an option in the poll, I'm not voting.
