Tbh, it's probably just bad rng. I'm still finding caves at the rate I was before and I was able to find the 5 caves the day the storyline continued…

I'm still at only 1 cave. Granted I only usually get to use one or two energy bars on days I work, and some work days I don't have time to log in. I hope RNG improves or exploring at night helps as some have suggested. I was finding a few caves, not a lot, but at least one every couple days before it became a quest to find them.

Night time worked for me, try nights in the prairie, I got all mine in one energy bar when I did that.
