Breeding to get high tiers

Breeding to get high tiers
Posted 2022-03-04 05:17:28
Looking for more info on how to breed for colors/tiers.  What is the expected contribution of the lineage behind the parents?

I bred two T3 Realgar's - both parents had parents that were T3 Realgar's. Both had a history of producing T3 Realgar's. The result of the breeding was three T1 puppies.  I would assume that a breeding "like" to "like" should have better odds than that.

That was my understanding on what I've read on other posts, etc.  In other words:

If I had bred her to a T2/Warm Dark - my chances of a T3 are worse and my chances for a T2 better?

If I bred her to a T1/Warm Dark - my chances are much higher to get all T1's?

At the same time - I also bred a T2 Warm Medium to a T3 Warm Medium - and again - got all T1's?

Is it all completely random and makes no difference at all?  If so, that is very discouraging and takes away the challenge of finding the perfect pair for what you want in your den.  I was hoping that was the point of the game but I'm getting the impression that it doesn't matter???

Is that correct?  Can anyone offer any insight??

As far as I know, T3 x T3 has better chances of giving T3 than breeding to lower tiers. I'm not sure if T* x T3 has even higher chances than T3 x T3 or not.

I'm pretty sure that having T3 ancestors and/or having a history of breeding T3 has nothing to do with the chances of breeding T3. When breeding, genetics are calculated between the two parents and the rest of their family trees are ignored. And all T3 have the same chances of give you T3 pups either if they have breed tons of other T3 pups or not.
At the end, it all comes down to RNG and how lucky you are when genetics roll.

When I started my T3 R&C project, I bred my Realgar with another Realgar and I got no T3 (probably some T2, but I don't remember). Next litter, once again Realgar with Realgar, I got 2 or 3 Realgar pups at once. IIRC, I got at least one T3 pup in each of her following litters, safe maybe for one. I also got a Pyrope from two Realgar.
My actual T3 females for R&C are a Flint and a Striped Flint. One of the two, in her first litter had no T3. The other one had three T3.
But I'm pretty sure a T3 linage has no relevance in the breeding process.

Thanks - that's a great help in understanding the process.  And even better to know that the lineage doesn't contribute.  I was researching based on parentage as well because I saw a fair number of posts that indicated great concerns about "inbreeding."  If the generational parents don't matter - I would assume then that inbreeding or "clean" breeding is truly about not breeding pup to a parent and not about having a same grandparent, etc.

I'll have to research more about the R&C projects.  I do raise any of my high mark, stat or tier pups that I don't want to keep or haven't been able to share with others, to Chase when they age up.  I do it because I'd love to see higher stat or marked pups in the biomes - not sure if it makes a difference but figured I'd do what I can.

Thanks for your help!

hi! here's a grouse house post about genetics, which has some info on pass rates- unfortunately, I'm pretty sure your failed realgar x realgar breeding was just bad RNG, as that's the optimal combo to pass down the warm dark t3 base. as far as I can tell, the grouse house post doesn't list exact pass rate percentages, but there is a wolvden wiki page that does give percentages.

I + III = 74% I, 25% II, 1% III
II + III = 49% I, 50% II, 2.5% III
III + III = 50% I, 40% II, 10% III

so if those numbers are right, not surprised you didn't get any t3s from your t2 x t3 breeding- I've never gotten any either from mine. I can't find any special x t3 percentages, sadly :/. hope this helps! this is just what I usually refer to and use while breeding.

Inbreeding at the moment has no downside in terms of gameplay.
For most people it's more an ethical matter of not breeding related wolves, as you said. And with time it kinda became some sort of additional challenge for some players, about keeping your breeding line "clean" and without having the same relatives even in far away generations.
That's why right now low generation wolves are more popular: because it's easier to check their lineage and avoid inbreeding.

Personally, I try to avoid obvious inbreeding (so parent-pup breeding) or at least I try to avoid common ancestors that I can see in the family tree page. I breed for beauty with an eye on good stats, so I don't worry too much about lineage as long as it's not obvious (because at that point, it might become harder to sell the pups)
But there are other players that check all the family tree until the very first ancestor. It's really up to you to decide how important is inbreeding to your way of play.

A huge help - thank you as well.  I had read the Grouse House page and have bookmarked the wiki page.  You're right though - with those odds the fact that I did get a T3 previously actually was pretty lucky.  That being said - T3 to T3 I guess is still the best shot at getting those higher tiers.  Which also makes the predominance of the *special* tiers make much more sense.

Thanks again!!!

@PiffleLovesBaseball - I've been breeding for high stats and appearance (avoiding the things I don't like which I find to be very hard to do!) as well with an attempt at getting higher marks and tiers.  I carry some opinions from the real world that I probably shouldn't be applying to a game so I too try not to inbreed too tight although I am open to line breeding.  Sometimes I'll look @ the stud I want's children, etc. and hope for a stud in that group to use, etc.

From this discussion I think I should also lean toward selling the high tiers I produce but don't want to keep rather than giving them away....  we'll see on that!

yw, and good luck with the selling! I must warn you though, most do say they find it hard to sell their t3s. also wishing you best of luck for your future breedings!
