A Leader's Questions...

Posted 2023-07-24 11:12:21 (edited)
The elderly wolf, Emer, chuckled lightly before replying.
" I have seen and fought those beasts, even skinned their pelts, but those creatures are nothing more than prey for the Astral Realm. The Astral Realm don't eat normal prey like you and I do. As for their power, I'd say whatever gives those creatures their strength is the same that empowers Calirr the Stormbringer, or Galvana the Eternal Huntress."
He looked away for a moment, realizing some may not trust his account.
"...While some may believe that the Astral Realm does not exist, I have seen them with my own two eyes. They... Seem to favor us for some reason..."

He turned to the wolf next to him
" Now, I've seen my wolves' coats change in the blink of an eye with special concoctions that I've bought from those Cnitharian wolves. How do you suppose they get their wares? And how do they store them?"

The female had stalked her way back to this meeting place after much time away in the Tundra. She had been sitting at the edge of the gathered Leaders, not quite willing to be recognised, especially without her Baron here, unless a question was directed right at her. Of course, as it would be, the dark-pelted wolf had settled beside an older one, finding that their senses may be dulled enough not to see her as a possible threat.
"I conduct all events of purchase and selling withing the Event Horizon Tribe. Having witnessed many forthcomings of those canines and having been passed tales of them by my predeccessor, I now believe they make all of their wares. Their world collides with ours every full Moon, meaning they must have a whole other realm, just beyond our reach. As for where they store it all? It must be quite the hustle to even bring all of that safely to us. My best guess is that those Lunar Tears insure protected passage", the Viscountess spoke in a calm, collected tone, though there was a tinge of curiousity in her blue eyes.

"I suppose I should come up with a question myself. Here, let me think... Oh! We've had an interasting few encounters with dragons, I myself happened to grow up with one. Has anyone ever found a pair of them, with eggs or hatchlings?"Eclipsed Sun directed her snout towards a nearby tree, her silver scaly friend looming over them all from the branches.

The large male visibly shivered at the mention of dragons. Glancing around nervously, he leaned forward and spoke in a hushed tone. "I have never met a dragon, but my tribe has a rich history with one. We come from an overthrown kingdom of sun-worshipping wolves from the far north. Their royalty was bound to a dragon by blood, and was controlled by it." He let out a sigh before starting again. "The dragon took the form of a wolf, and it made an agreement with the first king and manipulated all of his descendants, driving each one of them to madness and eventually death."

Amaqjuaq rose back to his full height, shaking off his fur and clearing his throat. Now, speaking in a much stronger and louder voice, he faced the wolf next to him and asked his question. "How did your pack come to be? Who were the first to lead it?"

Rykanen stood up and shook his fur,Β  annoying the others with a a spray of warm droplets .
"I was born in no-wolf's land, in that strip of land that divides the grassland from the mountains. Alone I wandered in that limbo until, one day I was approached by a mysterious dark wolf by the name of Tala. She promised me a future if I had the courage to grab it, so I moved towards the highest peaks, fighting every inch of the way. Soon a young female joined me, then a male. Our small pack found a place to stay and day by day grew stronger. Moving the pack was a hard decision. The mountains were our home, our cradle, but some of our own were falling ill and River Flight, our herbalist, told us that to cure the pack they needed rare herbs, so me moved south, first to the swamps then to the rainforest were we still dwell. The decision was sound, we are now 51, with more pups coming. Scouts roam the lands, bringing back toys for the younger ones, and hunting parties provide us with all the food we may need, and I keep us safe, patrolling our territory and checking out the land of dream."

Rykanen closed his golden eyes and seemed to exit the trance of memory.
"The pups are our future, and it is important to train them well. Yet often more are born that those our land may support. The old Bear says they will take care of the ones we cannot keep. It is a pretty story, invented for the weeping parents, but we all know that only few make il through his paws to a new family. The others end in his ever-growing stomach. Pray, tell me, how do you choose which young ones are fit to live, and which ones will end their live with the mighty Bear? Or alone in the wilderness, pray of the beasts we hunt?"

(I gotta break the fourth wall a bit with this one)
Enlight was immediately taken aback, not having expected this kind of question nor the accusations of the bear. Admittedly, her pack had its suspicions, but hearing those suspicions spoken in confidence was a bit to take in. With a deep breath, Enlight chose her words, "You are correct, my pack usually ends up with too many pups. We decide which ones to keep based on the complexity of the pup's pelt pattern (the more markings the better) and potential in a future role (stats are important but second to aesthetics). For those we can not keep... they go to the bear or are raised and chased off. We... have faith most of our pups make it..."

With the last sentence being forced through gritted teeth, Enlight trailed off with a few mumbles, turning to another wolf to continue the passing of questions. "Hrm... Do you have a story about your pack you wish to share but never had the opportunity to? It could be an elaborate one, the creation of your pack perhaps, or mundane, a simple interaction between members."

Dapple's eyes glow, and her surroundings seem to shift for a moment before settling back into her bland pelt and boring surroundings. The branches growing from her body blow in the breeze. "I have been here before," she whispers, tail wagging. "It was a long time ago, but I remember an old pack, and old friends. This world was much wilder then."

She turns to the wolf at her side. "What is your story? How did you become your pack's leader? What do you remember from before you assumed your position?"

The ebony male with white swirled through his fur looked at the wolf beside him. He dropped the bone in his mouth and calmly and replied with a medium-pitched, serious tone, "Hello there. My name is Kintaro. As for my story, I never knew my parents. I don't even know what happened to them... I was adopted by Touri and Kaho during 'Vingetza Caodare' which is old-speak for 'the last revenge cry' which was the war for peace after corruption ensued and engulfed the lands. After the war ended, everyone made truces and vowed to uphold honor and peace, bolster their brethren, and cherish their packmates. Touri, Kaho, their pups, a few survivors we picked up along the way, and myself traveled far away from everyone to stake out territory in the grasslands.

"I was less than a year old, when Touri and Kaho went walking into the autumn evening. They were quite old and we all knew their time was short. They never came back. We searched for them but never found a trace." Kintaro looked down and scraped the ground with his paw, clearly distraught. He raised his head and his dark brown eyes shimmered thoughtfully. "But we know that when the evening sun shines upon us, they are watching over."

"I became the unofficial leader of our small pack at that point, under the guidance of Talladega and Lakota. When Talladega decided to travel for more peace talks between our packs and other, I stepped up and became the lead. Nakumah, who was Touri and Kaho's daughter, became my personal assistant. Some days we get along well, other days we don't."

Kintaro smiled warmly and turned to the wolf next to him. "Hello! What is your name? I'm curious, what's the funniest or most dramatic moment in your pack?"

The young auburn female with black & white marbled patterns in her fur trotted up eagerly to answer Kintaro's question,
"Hello there! I am Vistula of the Ava'al clan - I am the Queen of Yliaster." Her bright eyes shimmered with warmth, though there was a subtle melancholy or weariness in her gentle voice. "Oh, how I wish that we had more funny and light-hearted moments, but for a few years now we've had more drama and tragedy than I can bear sometimes... Perhaps the most dramatic moment was the way my father, King Kyllikke, died. Speaking about it is still difficult for me, the scene of his death haunts me, but his courage must be told. My father died to save the life of a dear friend during a terrible battle with some vicious nomad wolves... There are still friends missing, we hope to find them soon. We pray..."

Vistula's voice trailed off as her eyes welled up with tears. She turned her face away, took a deep breath, and tried to think of something more cheerful to ask the other wolf nearby: "Do you have any pups of your own? If so, how old are they and what are they like? If not, are you planning to have some pups in the near future?"

Dapple smiles. She wags her tail as she mentions "I have a daughter and a son. I once had more, but the girls were destined for… greater things. I hope that they are safe in the wilds. Maybe they'll make a pack and we'll meet again."

Her green branches tremble as she stands, approaching another wolf. "Do you have a partner, my friend? What are they like? My love has been with me for a very long time…" she continues to yammer on about her mate, talking about the pup that they had adopted together and their story while her unwilling victim was thinking.

Longstar looked down, ears folding back. "I don't really have any mate." After a moment, his face brightened, looking wistful a little as he thought of something. "Maybe someday," he murmured.

He turned to his left as he spotted movement. As another wolf entered the clearing, he asked, "Do you like to draw? I love dragging sticks through the dirt to create beautiful sketches! If you do, what's your favorite thing to draw?"
