If you can *cough* find *cough* them, the old Petz games were exactly this. Dogz/Catz were the names, I think the last iteration was 4?? Anyway, the little creatures in game were generated using a fairly simple art style involving sizes/textures/colors of dots and animated. The offspring of your petz inherited these traits from the parents, they had life spans and needs like food/water/play, and the game updated in real time. So each day you loaded the game it would "age" everyone. it was honestly a blast and way ahead of its time. You can still find mods for it even if you poke around.

Yeeah haha they're old! I grew up playing them and last time I tried loading into them they held up shockingly well, I think because they went with such a distinctive art style. Kinda want to go find them again now.

Oh man same! That was my very first foray into modding! And then it was Zoo Tycoon skin edits. Anyway, sorry to spam this thread haha. Great games though and probably still a good way for someone to learn modding now that you mention it.

I was really baffled for a minute when you guys mentioned Petz Dogz/Catz.  I had a game at one point by that name that was really bad.  It didn't take much outside of cute animal games to appease me back then, but I still couldn't get into it.
  However it turns out that there are multiple games by this name!  The ones that I had been subject to were the DS games, not PC games.  I'll have to see what's up with the PC games, they look interesting.  But anyone whos hearing of them for the first time and looks into it, make sure your looking for the PC Petz Dogz/Catz, not the atrocity that is the Petz series on DS!

Not sure if this qualifies, but...Pokéfarm Q is a nice game! It's just your everyday pokémon collector, but they have a nice community and plenty of activities to do. They even have some creative looking fakemon :}
