Community Update #116

Yeah, I agree.
I discovered Wolvden before Lioden, and when I tried Lioden out, I was astanoished how many different piebald (black piebald spots, too!) variants and mutations there were. I can totally imagine that every new variant must be very hard to do, since (I guess?) you have to make the artwork for it for all markings, bases, etc.
But Lioden already has so many mutations (I don't know how many variants there are right now), and of course, Wolvden is way younger, but you're still focusing more in Lioden, even though it already has way more features. I think Wolvden could be as big if it had more features; at least I think, I've no experience in things like that.
Also, Lioden has beetles for example. Of course, Lioden and Wolvden are still different games even though they are kinda related; I don't expect to have every feature we have in Lioden in Wolvden, and I don't expect every feature we have in Wolvden in Lioden. But you maybe get my point? Something similiar with another animal and a bit different system than the beetles here in Wolvden would be nice (at least I think so).
This isn't meant as hate, I'm happy that this game exists, but it's just my opinion.

To keep my reply short yet to the point, I also agree with everyone else. This news post really irked me. I was really sad that the halloween event wasnt even able to get finished... and also the fact that some of the valentines day event items arent even finished. I feel like wolvden is on the back burner.

Hope there is no backlash for all of us voicing our opinions, but its nice to see others speak up about it aswell. We do appreciate everything that has been done for wolvden though.

I agree with everybody above me, this game has a lot of potential, and I really like how it seems more strategy based then lioden which I really like, I like the survival aspect but it feels as though thus game exists to to get money to pump into lioden, the money spent on wolvden should go towards wolvden, and wolvden should be have the same priority as lioden, at least close to. I love this game and I appreciate the work devs have put in, but it's frustrating sometimes

Yes, that's what I'm saying. I don't mean ANY hate, no bad thing is intended. I'm just saying my opinion on how you, as a team, and we, as players who are worried for the game and only want the best for it, can fjx jt.

Wow.. I don't know how to explicitly put it in my own words but goddamn some of you have some very valid and sad points.

All in all I see it as a dick move to put the wanted ad in a community post centered around WOLVDEN community when (while I don't actively PLAY LD, do have an account) it's so blatantly put that the two sites SHOULDN'T be merged in terms of conversations in any given time say, on chat or likewise, it feels almost like betrayal in a sense.

That's not all I want to say but I don't have the greatest way to put the words I have left into motion.

I 100% agree with everyone above me. Apologies if this comes off as rude but.. I feel it needs to be said regardless.

Agree with the above comments..As an EA player I already know how on the back burner WD is compared to LD. But to put an ad here for an artist for LD when art here from nearly a year ago is still unfinished? Questionable strategy here guys.

Agreeing with what everyone's said. From the moment WD came out, it kinda felt like the red-headed stepchild to LD. They get all the love and attention and WD is hiding in its shadow, waiting for the scraps that are tossed out to us. Updates come in slowly and sporadically, and when they do, there's often chunks of features that are missing.

The most glaring is groups. We got groups 15 months ago and I'm going to be blunt here, but it's the worst addition to the site by far. There's no notifications for group notices or forum messages, there's no subscriptions to those forums, you can't edit posts or announcements, there's no way to look up specific players, the way it's set up is unintuitive and you can't know what a group is until you join it, the hoard system is just an absolute dumpsterfire... And it's stayed exactly like that ever since we got it. It's literally that meme of:

"Mom, can we have clans like LD?"
"No, there are clans at home."
Clans at home...

I haven't been on LD for a while, but I don't think they have such a big lag problem over there like we do here either. Bad gateways and server timeouts are still incredibly common, I get multiple a day no matter the time. I mean, I just got a 502 Bad Gateway while typing this! It's in middle of the day, not near RO. But we've all come to accept them as just a part of the game.

We don't get the same kind of attention LD does, we just sorta get whatever can be squeezed out after LD stuff has been prioritized and finished. The only time I remember the opposite happening is during the initial release of Coigreach or Cataclyms, (can't remember which,) where it was stated that LD was getting a bit less that month for us to have our new event here. That was a great damn feeling, to be the ones getting the focus for once.

To have an ad for a site that is already well-established and well-fed on a site that is struggling to keep up with art and updates? That's kinda tone-deaf. If there are artists needed for LD, please keep that to LD. WD is its own site with its own thing going on - not off-brand Lioden, not Lioden 2.0. This has been stated since day one, and it's something we've been encouraged to withhold. I'd like that separation to stay, for a 50/50 to be put into place. Not this uneven split that gets a spotlight shined on it from ads like this, where we're the secondary to LD's primary. WD may not be as big, but that doesn't make it inherently lesser.

I like WD, I would have left a long time ago if I didn't. I just wish it didn't feel like Wolf Game was getting shafted time and again. It's disheartening to see just how many new and old players alike are saying the same.

Hi there,

We're sorry if the advertisement for an artist on Wolvden doesn't sit right with you, but please allow us to clarify some things that have been raised here.

Wolvden is the sister site to Lioden.  Wolvden has had the lion's share (excuse the pun) of development over the past 3 years since its release.  We are a small indie team, we typically split the work between both games.

We recently realised that things like mutations and variants take a very long time to complete and soak up most of Xylax's time when we decide to do them.  Lioden's system is a bit easier to work with than Wolvden's, but also has a lot more files (as the game has been out longer).  We decided to hire an artist with a focus on Lioden so that it eases Xylax's time spent on that, and so that he can direct his focus elsewhere (for instance, to the February companion art).

We decided to advertise the role on Wolvden as well to cast a wider net and hopefully attract the right artist for the role.  This does not mean that we are using Wolvden to further Lioden's development - we would do the same if we wanted to focus a role on Wolvden.  We want to reiterate here that the majority of roles we have are for both games; art work is split relatively evenly between them.

The artist we hire for Lioden to relieve Xylax of some of the heavy lifting, and will allow him to give more creative attention to Wolvden and its needs.

(A small note; we also see that October's delayed storyline was mentioned here.  This was not caused by art delays, there was a delay earlier in the process that created a domino effect, meaning that the artists had no time left to complete the storyline art.  We have discussed this with the people involved where there were delays and we intend to have no further problems in this area, but the art was not the main cause of the delay.)

It is my sincere hope that hiring a new artist over at Lioden will allow Xylax to focus more on Wolvden, because like others have voiced, that is desperately needed. A lot of us are clearly frustrated - especially the custom decor artist community. We aren't even allowed to Modbox anymore for CD concerns/questions. So yes, I will reiterate that it is my sincere hope that more energy/time/effort can be put into Wolvden.

P.S. I must give credit where credit is due, and you guys did an awesome job with recent bug fixes, QOL improvements and hiring the cultural consultant. My criticism is always coming from a place of deep love and admiration for this game and its team, despite how b*tchy I may come across at times.

With all due respect and not trying to bash anybody or spread any hate. I understand coming from a small indie company, it's a lot of work spread through a small staff and everybody does a little of everything. Hiring another artist so Xylax is not as overworked and can focused on wolvden art makes sense, however that was not mentioned in the ad (once again I understand having a lot of work and trying to be efficient with announcements) but without that knowledge it just added to some frustrations people have been feeling.
As a site we do understand the hard work you do, and we're not trying to discredit that, but we wouldn't be this vocal about our opinions if we didn't care so much for this game and site. A lot of players here are also on lioden and have looked into it to some extent, and that shows the discrepancies between the two sites.
It feels as though wolvden is getting scraps from lioden. I understand lioden is older, you've had more time to build on the content and create the large amount of content. However, it feels as though lioden is continously getting more new things compared to wolvden month by month. I understand wanting to keep up with your content release for lioden, you have a large community to support but it feels as though that is coming at a cost to wolvden and wolvdens community.
We want to support this game, but there's no correlation between the money we spend on GC in the grove and the improvements to the game, this for me personally had been a huge hesitation for me spending money on this game. I want to support wolvden, but I want to know my money will.
As game devs a lot of work is done, the lunar events are a good example of that, and I do appreciate the desire to put out good quality work as opposed to rushed work. However sometimes it feels as though the devs don't always listen to the community on complaints or opinions, the karma system being on of them (I understand this is an issue people are divided on) but most, that I personally have seen, seem to agree that we want wolvden to be it's own thing, not lioden 2.0, having differences beyond species add to how special this game can be.
Some things may just be my lack of understanding, or maybe not super clear communication between the community and devs, but we are all here because we love this game and we want to support it, I've gotten very attracted in my time plating here and I like to think I've made a few friends. Once again in sorry if the conclusions I've made have been from my own misunderstanding, I don't want to devalue the work you have all done to create and keep this site going. We just all care a lot about this game and where it's going. Thank you.
