When the sun came up, Azarrath had somehow fallen asleep in her chair. Her emotions had gotten the best of her in that situation, and now she was mentally exhausted. She coughed into a handkerchief, flecks of blood coloring it a deep metallic red. She took a deep breath, shivering in the cold of the new morning.

When she entered her apartment finally, she grabbed a piece of paper and scribbled a warning on it to herself. Do NOT under any circumstances, talk to Quinn ever again. She then folded the piece up and stuck it in her bra, knowing that was the only place she wouldnt lose it. A bell rang down below, signaling a meeting to discuss missions. She clapped her hands together, smiling slightly. This was just what she needed to forget about Quinn's words.

She jumped off the balcony, scaling down the building and laughing wildly. She saw everyone flocking to the clearing and followed, jumping between buildings before landing on the same pointed stone she had watched Quinn win from. No.. it's just a stone, dont connect it to her. That's idiotic. She cursed at herself, taking a sharp breath in before nodding and waiting for the Duke to speak. Everything will be fine. I just need this distraction.

The Duke emerged from the head building, hands clasped behind his back, chin tilted upwards. His sides were flanked by his bodyguards, the place where Aaron usually stood being occupied by someone else. Nicky was also standing beside him, arms crossed behind her back. Watching with a calculating eye, he watched as people filed in, saluting him one by one. He glanced up with a cold expression as Azzarath perched on her usual stone, watching the crowd below.

He frowned. Someone was missing. Clearing his throat, The Duke leaned towards one of his advisors, whispering under his breath. The advisor, a nervous-looking young lady, nodded furiously, before turning and rushing away, clutching a clipboard to her chest.

The Duke stood straighter, spreading his arms wide. "Well, now, while we wait for our... newest recruit... to join us," he said, cracking a smile that didn't reach his eyes. He clapped loudly, the sound echoing throughout the courtyard. "I hope everyone slept well last night, as we have much to do today!" He waved his hand to Nicky, who stepped forward with her hooked nose in the air. She dipped her head respectfully to her boss, before turning to the crowd.

"We have received reports of the local police station investigating one of our supplier's warehouses. Now, as you all know," she said, eyes scanning the crowd. "This could be very detrimental to our cause if they succeed. We will need some of our more powerful individuals, which will be determined based on power status and experience. They will, of course, be handpicked by our Great Leader." She motioned to The Duke, bowing to him slightly. As he stepped up once more, everyone tensed in anticipation.

With a great bang, Quinn flew out of the apartment building, hopping as she put on her shoe. "Sorry, sorry, I slept in!" she yelped, stamping her foot, before glancing up. Her face paled as she realized that not only was she horribly late, but she had just made a fool of herself: in front of The Duke, in front of literally everybody, and in front of Azzarath.

Hey, uh, yeah, Pyro? Can you please just fucking annihilate me?

Not a chance, firefly.

Despite the horrified and disgusted looks from the crowd, The Duke found this whole debacle quite entertaining, to say the least. His face split into a wicked grin as he raised his arm, slowly, and pointed a crooked finger at Quinn.

"She'll be going," he said, his voice echoing in the courtyard.

Quinn stood in stunned silence, blinking. I'm sorry, but what the fuck? Going where exactly???

Something serious, apparently, Pyro sizzled. Well, no shit, Sherlock, what gave you that idea? She shifted her weight, glancing about nervously. "Uh, sorry, I don't know what you mean? Could someone, like, fill me in?" She looked back at the woman who had fetched her, but all she did was squeak and hide behind her clipboard.

Azzie made eye contact with her adoptive father, raising an eyebrow as spoke of Quinn. She had never seen him be so lenient with new recruits before, letting them be late to things without punishment. Which means he either knew something she didnt, which was likely, or he was planning something. He was too unpredictable, so she wouldnt be able to tell until something momentous happened. What are you planning..

She jumped slightly as the doors burst open, smashing against the walls and creating an earsplitting noise. She clenched her face up and braced herself until it had dissipated, before opening her eyes again. She refused to look at Quinn, keeping her eyes on everything but her. She put her hand on her chest, feeling the piece of paper with a reminder etched onto it poking her obsidian skin. This wont be hard, just ignore. When The Duke immediately chose Quinnlin and Pyro for the mission, she didnt care much. It was just another step to the Boss's complicated plans.

She didnt expect to be chosen. In fact, she hoped she wouldnt be chosen for this. It would be so much easier to forget about the woman, if she wasnt even here at all. "Thank the Gods.." She whispered, smiling to herself. "Maybe my luck hasn't worn off after all?"

Nicky bent her head to The Duke, her scarlet lips twisting into a frown. "Sir, I am not questioning your decision, but surely--" she stopped immediately as The Duke cut her off, waving his hand dismissively. "Yes, yes, I am aware of your concerns, Ms. Rikimoru," he said, completely unbothered. Nicky straightened her back, expression turning sour. The Duke, however, somehow seemed to grow taller as he stepped forward.

"And because of our dear Nicole's very important concerns, I will be choosing two others to accompany Ms. Alabastor." He looked pointedly at Azzarath.

"My daughter," he said firmly, eyes boring into Azzie, before shifting to someone else in the crowd, pointing to a gangly young man. "And Mr. Volkov."

The young man stepped forward, cracking his knuckles, before bowing to The Duke. He turned and made his way to Quinn, who still stood in stunned silence, glancing at The Duke, Azzarath, and the guy named Volkov. "What is happening?" she hissed to the man as he drew closer. In a thick Russian accent, he whispered back, "I will explain all later."

Oh great, yeah, ask for help from the guy who can barely speak English, Pyro snarked, causing Quinn to turn her head away from the man and hiss at him under her breath. "Shut up, dude, it's better than nothing!" She glanced back up as The Duke clapped his hands again.

"Now," he started, looking back to the rest of the crowd. "To assign your other tasks..." As he began to drone on, Quinn felt herself zone out. Maybe she was way too over her head for this.

When he looked at her pointedly, she knew something bad was about to happen. Figuratively of course. She shook her head rapidly when he called out for her, eyes widening. She, of course, would never dream of undermining him but why would he choose her for this? The whole point was for him to choose someone else so she could forget. She clenched her teeth, jumping from her perch and landing a ways away from Quinn. "Volkov." She greeted, looking away from the two.

She held her hands in front of her, twisting the ring on her finger marking her as a family member of The Duke. Her heart started thumping harder, goosebumps rising on her midnight skin. She had changed earlier into a formfitting bodysuit that showed off most of her tattoos, snaking along her skin in white lines, so she could definitely blame the bumps on the slight cold breeze. She doubted anyone would believe her though, considering it was hot as balls out besides the gale.

She closed her eyes as he started speaking again, turning him out and sighing. This is going to be a long mission..

"Azzarath," Volkov said, nodding curtly to the demon as she lept over.

Quinn hated to admit it, but her sudden appearance of made her jump. "Fuck, dude," she muttered, placing her hand on her chest. "You scared the shit outta me," she hissed at Azzarath.

She whipped her head around as one of The Duke's advisors approached them, his face surprisingly cheerful despite the scars that marred his face. Guess I'm not the only one, she thought, crossing her arms. "Hey guys, I've been assigned to give y'all the details on the mission," he said with a slight Southern accent. "Follow me!" He turned, not to the apartments nor the main building, but rather to the place right in the middle. Quinn and Volkov followed him, not waiting for Azzie.

She didn't answer Quinn when she spoke, her fingers fumbling awkwardly. Don't think. Just ignore. She told herself, dragging a deep breath in.

When the man approached them and the other two followed him close behind after he asked for them to come with him, Azarrath lagged behind on purpose. She glared at her adoptive father for a split second, her insides flaring with rage. She wanted to punch something, destroy someone's life, anything to keep her from going insane on this mission. The only thing keeping her from leaving was the promise of violence on those dirty cops. She clenched her hands, although they burned as though glass was sticking through them, and followed quickly after the group.

The Duke's eyes lingered on his adoptive daughter, eyes cold. Even when she turned to leave, he still watched her, never-blinking. He bent over to Nicky, mumbling something to her, to which she gave a curt nod, before turning and leaving.

Their tour guide (or whatever he was) grinned back at the group. "By the way, newbie, the name's Buck," he said, winking at Quinn. "You'll get used to hearing it around." Quinn raised a brow, unamused at the wink. He stared at her for a moment, before shrugging and turning around again.

The man led the small group down the alleyway, which opened up into a smaller courtyard, a building on the far side. There were training dummies, weapon racks, and archery targets everywhere. It was strangely empty. "This here's the training area," the man said over his shoulder. "Everyone trains here. No one's here right now, course, 'cos they're at the meeting." He chuckled, before motioning to the building they were walking towards. "And that there's the Mission Hall, where ya learn the details about yer targets and where ya gonna go."

Buck's accent was starting to hurt Quinn's head. He flung open the doors, and Quinn's eye adjusted to the darker light. It was larger on the inside than it seemed from the outside, with an arched ceiling and large mahogany bookshelves covering every wall. She assumed it was a library before... well, The Duke took over. She suddenly became very aware of how she was holding her hands, and she shoved them into her pockets, hunching her shoulders. This place seems very flammable, she thought to Pyro, swallowing a lump in her throat as she eyed a pile of paperback books.

As long as you stay calm, everything will be fine, Pyro reassured her, his voice warm, but Quinn still couldn't help but be anxious. She kept her body tense, even as Buck led them to a room in the back.

"And this," he said, turning and spreading his arms wide. "Is where the magic happens."

Volkov barked out a laugh. "Ha, magic. We look at map, nothing more," he said, shaking his head. Buck seemed annoyed by this. "Yeah, well, Alik," he said, sweeping his arm to the large round table in the middle of the room. "Since you're such a genius, why don't you explain the mission?" Volkov (or Alik?) puffed his chest out, glaring at Buck. "Do not call me that, country boy," he said, and the two stared at each other in tense silence.

Quinn glanced from one to the other before groaning out loud. "God, would you two just make out already, I'm trying to get this shit over with!" She pushed past the two men (much to their very loud protests) and began to examine the table.

Do I look cool? Quinn thought to Pyro. You have no idea what you're staring at, dumbass, he sizzled, laughing in her head. She couldn't help but crack a smile.

When Buck winked at Quinn, Azzie just rolled her eyes. I bet he thought he was being slick with that one. She thought, snickering to herself. She groaned after, hitting her forehead. Nope, don't laugh at anything to do with her. She lectured, shaking her head furiously.

When they entered the training area, she could already feel the tingle on the back of her neck from someone watching her. She immediately slowed down, letting the group move into the next room before stopping in the middle of the training equipment. The doors had been shut almost all the way, a crack in them so that the only way someone could hear a conversation was if they tried. Azarrath took a deep breath before flashing a wicked grin, "come out, come out, wherever you are." She cooed, turning around slowly to survey her surroundings. And then? Her worst nightmare stepped out of the shadows.

She gasped in terror as her eyes ran up his lab coat, landing on his signature lip scar that ran in a straight line from nose to chin. "No, no, why are you here?? More importantly, how did you find me? It should've been impossible." He laughed coldly, pushing his glasses up his nose. "You should know more than anyone that I never give up on an experiment." He took a step forwards, and she a step back. "You need to leave, you're not welcome here. And I can sure as hell beat your ass now, I'm not a little kid anymore." She spat at him, reaching towards one of her hidden knives. He just clicked his tongue, and shook his head. "I had hoped you'd come quietly, but you always were a brat."

She tried to back up into the door to push it open. But she just hit solid wood, When did this close?? She tried to remember, but it was useless. She started bashing her fist against it when he raised what looked like a syringe in the air, panic bubbling up and closing her throat so she couldn't scream. She hit her hand harder and harder until it started bleeding slightly, the grooves digging into her skin. Gods, please let someone hear me.. She thought, eyes stinging, as he slowly made his way towards her.

Quinn's head shot up at the sound of desperate pounding on wood, her heart rate spiking instinctively. It echoed in the room, bouncing off of the bookshelves. She clenched her hands into fists on the table, trying not to freak out.

Deep breaths, firefly, Pyro rumbled. Quinn obliged, closing her eye and taking a deep breath. It wasn't her; she wasn't six anymore. You're far away from there now.

"Right, right," Quinn mumbled under her breath, dipping her head.

"What the hell is that?" Buck said, looking around in confusion. Alik glanced behind him, before furrowing his brow. "Where is Azzarath?"

Quinn's head popped up again, eye wide. "Wait, holy shit, you're right, where is she?" Quinn pushed herself away from the table, following the sound of nails clawing against wood. She paused in her tracks when she realized that it was coming from the door they had entered before. Grabbing the brass handles, she flung them open.

There was Azzarath, but there was also someone else; a man in a lab coat, holding up a syringe. She felt fire bubbling up in her chest, white-hot with rage as she realized what he was planning. Stumbling forward, she let out a bellow, her chest's fire spilling onto her skin. Pyro leaping past Azzarath towards the man, flame talons extended.
