What about: some sort of human apocalypse happens that leaves the cities for the taking as they crumbled and a group of animals took up residence? Maybe a few generations later they have to leave the city because there's not enough food and so they start looking for a new home in the strange land beyond the city?

Something along the lines of this

oooh that'd be exciting!! are you thinking just a random disaster or like radiation kinda thing? radiation could be interesting for things like glowing eyes, mixed animals, that kinda thing but if normal animals simple were left behind and managed to survive and (depending how long ago the apocalypse happened) started to mix with wild animals (eg, wolfdogs, half wildcat/domestic, falcons and macaws living together, etc!) or simply warrior esque animals that go from pets to having to survive alone.

could also do things with continued disasters, storms/floods/heatwaves and have them survive that as well as learn to be 'wild'
