I will continue to have less time for Wolvden over the next couple of months and with the recent passing of the pack's alpha female I've decided to take a break from Wolvden and my pack lore rather than attempting to maintain it at such a minimalist level.
I expect things to go back to normal by the end of February, at the latest, and intend to pick up the Greyfeather Pack's story where it left off once I'm able to give it the time it deserves. Feeling lost and isolated as a result of their mother's death, Amar and Vijay both depart from the pack.
A sense of instability among the pack pushes Samira and Kunal to leave and establish their own territory.

After the hard loss of the pack's alpha female last season, spring came this year with a quiet sullenness. The lack of a new litter makes the pack seem far quieter than it should be--a sad and eerie reminder of the gap that Swaran left behind.
Last year's litter is old enough now to join in the hunting and the pack has been eating well. The typical restructuring of the hunting teams occurred, with Alpha Itai taking the strongest of his youngest pups under his toutilage and allowing his more experienced children to hunt under their own guidance.
The change also saw two pack members depart: Raj and Neha. Raj, being the last remaining pup of Itai's first litter, was somewhat expected--he was near three years old but rather small and low ranking compared to his younger siblings. Hopefully he finds a more comfortable position with another pack or in his own territory. Neha's departure was a surprise to me--as the strongest of her siblings I expected she might vie for her father's position and take over the territory when it was time but perhaps she was ready now to start her own pack.
The lack of spring pups to care for seems to have put the pack into a sense of autopilot but the young yearlings are diving headlong into learning and their uncle Ejiro is doing a supreme job of keeping the family fed.
Mid Spring (Month 2)
I almost forgot to mention the signs of distemper that appeared late last month. I think I was so disheartened over the loss of Swaran I could barely think of anything but the lack of new pups. Simran and Arun are both infected now, with Simran apparently being the starting source. I have no idea how he caught it but I do worry about its potential to spread on top of the ear mite infestation. So far the two brothers seem to be handling it well and I have hopes they may fight it off and recover. Their youthful energy is undoubtedly a huge help to them now, but the infection could be particularly dangerous to Itai or Ejiro if it spreads to them.
Worse yet, Itai was infected with ear mites this month, leaving his yearlings attempting to hunt on their own without his guidance. They got lucky early in the month with a small critter but it seems it was only luck as they haven't produced anything else for weeks. The new beta team, now consisting of Ejiro, the more experienced Hira, Sanji, and Gemma from Itai's second litter, and the young Yash, appear to be in the throws of learning to work together and have also failed a majority of their hunts this month. Little Raman, the smallest wolf from this last litter has attempted some solo hunting but I only witnessed one success. Everyone is undoubtedly hungry and spreading illness will only make the situation worse.
Late Spring (Month 3)
The yearlings appear to be doing a little better hunting this month with a successful deer hunt early on. Itai recovered from ear mites at the end of spring and the combination of his guiadance and their increased experience allowed them to take down a small bison! I have to say I was quite impressed seeing a team composed primarily of yearlings have such a resounding success. The pack devoured the carcass and beta team even went on to take down an elk--they were clearly hungry but I imagine all of them are well satiated now. Sadly much of the elk carcass went to scavengers but it's still good to see the pack having a bit more hunting success this month.
Ear mites and distemper continue to linger within the pack. The ear mites bounce from member to member so quickly it's difficult to keep track. I can only imagine how difficult it is to learn to hunt with new team members when someone new is sick and unable to hunt every week. Distemper spread to Yash early this month as well but Arun is showing signs of recovery and will likely be immune from future infections. Simran is also still infected but both he and Yash appear to be doing alright so far--their youthful energy continues to keep them healthy. I can only hope it doesn't spread too far.

Itai caught distemper and my heart sinks with sorrow to see it. Of all the pack members that could have caught it I was hoping the most that it would not be him. His age means he will most likely not recover and the pack will be thrown into a state of transition when most members are ill and many unable to even hunt. I hope they will rally to pull through the upcoming hardship but it's also possible the siblings will scatter.
Mid Summer (Month 2)
Yash recovered from distemper this month which is a relief to see--he should be immune from future infection now. Alpha Itai and Simran are still infected--Simran, despite being sick the longest, seems to be doing well. His youth is undoubtedly to thank. Alpha Itai continues to hunt and although he is clearly slowing down shows no signs of giving up or giving in. I want to hope for the best but the chances seem so slim.
The ear mites are, of course, still running rampant and there are rarely more than a couple pack members able to hunt. Despite that, the pack is miraculously remaining well fed although they are experiencing a noticeable impact on their growth, particularly the youngest members. Yash, who has been infected with distemper but still able to hunt, has taken a place among alpha team now. He replaced his brother Arun, now on beta team, who has been infected by the mites and unable to participate in the hunting or keep up with the other members of alpha team. It's very possible the pups will continue to trade places among the hunting teams until a clearer order of strength is established or the ear mites finally clear up. And, with autumn on the way, I don't expect to see the mites completely clear until next spring or later.
Late Summer (Month 3)
Alpha Itai appears to be recovering! I truly can't believe it! I- I was honestly counting him as lost and already looking to which pack member might take his place but he's recovering! I know he's older and I know we recently lost Swaran and that there probably won't be any more pups from him but I won't let the negatives outweigh my absolute giddiness! I'm so happy he'll be able to keep teaching his youngest pups--I think they stand a much better chance being able to learn from him. And I'm just so darn impressed that he managed to pull through distemper even at his age. Good on you, Itai! Such a survivor. I hope you enjoy the rest of your seasons to their fullest.
Start of Summer(Jan 15)
Hira is free of ear mites however they spread to Arun, Ejiro, and Puja.
Distemper spreads to Alpha Itai.
Hunting
Week 1: Itai, Simran and Deep hunt down a beaver. On his own, Yash seemed to have a successful hunt but failed to bring down his prey. Raman is able to catch a stoat on his own.
Week 2: Itai, Simran and Deep were successful in chasing but unfortunately Deep let the prey slip away! They managed to corner a grouse on the way back. Hira and Yash lost track of the prey during the chase and were unable to finish the hunt. However, they managed to corner a pheasant on the way back. Raman successfully hunts a whitetail on his own! 7 leftovers.
Deep is free of ear mites however they spread to Hira.
Hunting
Week 5: Itai, Simran, and Deep are able to take down an elk! 6 leftovers.
Week 6: Itai, Simran, and Deeplost track of the prey relatively early on, but managed to corner a pheasant on the way back. Yash lost track of his prey during the chase. Hungry pack members returned to last week's kill to feed.
Ejiro and Hira are free from ear mites however they spread to Deep.
Hunting
Week 7: Itai and Simran take down an elk cow. 5 leftovers.
Week 8: Itai and Simran lost track of the prey during the chase but managed to corner a pheasant on the way back. Ejiro, Hira and Yash are able to take down a bison. 21 leftovers.
