Researcher's Notes

Early Autumn (Month 1)

I've had a glimpse of the new hunting teams in action at the border of a more difficult hunting season and alpha team, with the alphas and their strongest pups, seems to be doing surprisingly well. Strategically, the alphas are taking the pack to their southern territory in the coniferous forest where hunting is easier and they've had enough success to keep the pack fed this month without the assistance of beta team as a backup. Ranging that far south takes quite a bit more time for them, but the effort must be worth it to increase the pups' confidence and keep the pack feed.

Mid Autumn (Month 2)

Alpha team had their first big failure this month when they lost track of some prey in deep autumn. Honestly they have such a good success rate thus far it's not too surprising to see them miss an opportunity. Fortunately beta team was ready and full of energy as backup--it's obvious they're skills have not declined despite the downtime and the team changes as they were able to take down a moose for the pack easily.

Finn is looking pretty rough here at the end of this month--he was wounded in mid autumn but has been having a harder-than-usual time with the injury the last few weeks. I'm afraid we might be looking at another loss if he does not see some luck in his near future.

Late Autumn (Month 3)

Sadly, I was correct about Finn. He collapsed early this month and simply did not have the strength to go on. His littermate, Ginger, seems particularly distraught at his loss. Being the only two pups in their litter, the siblings have been virtually inseparable since birth and the pack spent a good deal of time near his body while his sister got used to the idea of leaving him behind.

The pack also saw a departure this last week--Elene, one of the few remaining adult pups from the previous alphas, left the pack at the end of autumn, I presume to seek out a mate of her own to start a new pack. Breeding season is quickly approaching after all, and it does make some sense that a mature and experienced female like Elene might strike out on her own. Although departures have been uncommon in the last few years, there may be a connection to this and the alphas favoring hunting with their own pups.

Unfortunately Alpha Tendai is also showing symptoms of influenza as we close up the autumn season. I've seen infections come and go with surprisingly little impact and I've seen them hound the pack relentlessly. I'm not sure what to expect as winter approaches, but I'm truly afraid this infection will prevent the pack from seeing any new pups come spring.

Researcher's Notes

Early Winter (Month 1)

Unfortunately the first month of winter saw no relief from the influenza. Alpha Tendai is still sick and it spread to Dakarai, Braam, and Akinyi--all among the youngest members of the pack. Dakarai made a quick recovery; however, the more sick wolves there are, the more exponentially the illness tends to spread. Sadly, I don't expect a quick recovery this time around and with breeding season fast approaching I'll be genuinely surprised if we see pups this coming spring.

Mid Winter (Month 2)

Influenza continues to hold tight this month; roughly half the pack members are ill at any given time though they continue to do their best to hunt for the pack. Alpha team's success has become a bit shakier, but so far beta team hasn't let the pack down when needed.

Late Winter (Month 3)

There was a point in late winter when I witnessed the entire pack sick with influenza. Over the winter they've gone through periods of recovery which seems to allow them to regain some strength before they're inevitably infected by a family member again. Alpha Adaline has been sick through most of the winter so I'm certain now we will not see pups come spring.

I worry a little about the older members of the pack, particularly the alphas, as influenza can pose additional risk the older a wolf gets. Their first litter, however, is drawing closer to their 2nd birthday and they have all been recovering quickly for the most part. I expect their immune systems will only grow stronger as they reach their prime.

Start of Winter (Sep 5)

Researcher's Notes

We lost Alpha Adaline this season to the flu--the pack's first casualty to the illness. It happened in late spring which was all the more heartbreaking because she was showing signs of being in heat. Had anything come of it, it would have likely been her last litter but the pack is left now with only her mate, a couple dedicated family members and her one successful litter.

The influenza, of course, still holds a tight grip on the pack and in addition to Adaline's loss, there were other close calls this season. The older chaser, Ginger, grew dangerously weak at least twice--at one point in late spring she collapsed and I was certain she was done for, only to see her pushing on with the pack again a couple days later. Ejiro, one of the smaller pups from the alphas' litter also collapsed in high spring. He'd had a particularly rough run of influenza and I also thought he wouldn't make it, but I believe it was his youth that saved him.

Alpha Tendai carries on leading the pack without Adaline by his side, although he stopped hunting around the same time she passed. I'm not sure whether it was his grief or his age that spurred the change but he is, at least, continuing to mentor his pups as they hunt. Akinyi and Ejiro joined their brothers on alpha team (only still called so now because they seem to be the primary hunters for the pack) and the five littermates are getting used to hunting as a team again while Ginger and Levon remain as experienced backup.

In the last couple weeks Alpha Tendai has not been asserting his dominance at mealtime--allowing the other pack members to eat first. He is ill, and it's possible the influenza combined with his age is taking a toll. The change in their father has caused Itai and Dakarai to compete with each other for dominance although Tendai still has the energy to put them in their place when necessary. For the time being, the brothers' competition has not turned serious enough to cause any injuries and is being tolerated by the rest of the pack (although it's fair to say Ginger and Levon have very little patience for it once the brothers involve them in their posturing). It's likely one of these two brothers will take over leading the pack when their father's time comes.

Researcher's Notes

Alpha Tendai was lost to the influenza just a few weeks into summer. The death did not come as much of a surprise as he was beginning to loose his appetite and much of his energy after the loss of his mate in spring. His absence leaves the pack with his largely inexperienced litter, now just a little over two years old, and two older members of the Greyfeather line, both still sick with influenza.

Fortunately the younger pack members seem to have gotten a foothold in the fight against the illness and, since mid summer, though they were still getting infected on occasion, have been recovering quickly and reducing the spread among the pack. Levon, the stalker for beta team is showing signs of recovery here at the end of summer but the eldest member of the pack, Ginger, remains ill. She had a couple close calls in spring and I continue to see her health steadily decline. She may have a chance yet, especially with the younger pack members largely remaining healthy and eager to hunt, but her age may also work against her.

The competition between Dakarai and Itai that began in spring when their father started to withdraw continued, of course, after Alpha Tendai's passing; however, their energy and fervor seemed to decline steadily as the weeks passed. By late summer their competing was almost non-existant and, so far as I can tell, the two brothers are leading the pack together. It's an unusual circumstance, and one I've never seen in the pack's history before, but makes sense, I suppose while neither of them has a mate to compete for breeding rights. That said, I expect one or both of them will certainly be on the lookout for a potential alpha female and I have spotted one such wolf lurking within the pack's territory. Given their new cooperation, I'm curious to see how they handle such a temptation.

Researcher's Notes

The new female I saw within the pack's territory in summer has been hunting with the pack this autumn. She was welcomed among their ranks at the start of the season and began helping alpha team hunt almost immediately. I suspect Itai and Dakarai's openness to her is largely due to the fact that she was showing signs of being in heat.

She is a dark female with white undertones and subtle shading. She also has strange and haunting smoke-like eyes. I've never seen the like on a wolf within the pack before. I named her Swaran, as I suspect she'll be with the pack for a while--Itai and Dakarai were certainly head-over-heels for her when she first arrived but she was quite aggressive toward both of their advances. Actually, she's had quite a hard time fitting in to the pack--I witnessed disagreements between her and others cause hunts to fail a couple times this season and only since her heat ended in deep autumn has she started to warm up toward Itai. The rest of the pack seems to accept her only with weary caution.

Unfortunately, aside from Swaran's potential to become a breeding female for the pack, it has been quite a bad season. Ginger, the pack's older chaser, succumbed to influenza as I was afraid she would and only a couple weeks prior the pack lost Braam, one of Itai and Dakarai's litter mates, to an open wound he received last season. This last week we also lost Akinyi, the latest litter's only female member and favored stalker among the litter, and now Ejiro, the last remaining brother to Itai and Dakarai, is also currently suffering from an open wound.

There are only five now and although Swaran seems to be hunting more cooperatively with the rest of the pack, the member she seems to get along with is Itai. I hope if the balance of leadership changes (if she and Itai become a breeding pair, as seems likely) the pack will remain together or else the two will certainly have a very challenging road ahead of them.

Researcher's Notes

Early Winter (Month 1)

A failed hunt at the start of winter sent the pack back to a previous kill to fill their bellies. This has happened before when their prey is not large enough or, like this time, they fail to take down anything at all. Usually it's nothing worth reporting about; however, this time, it seems the old carcass was harboring some mites which have not been picked up by the pack. Thus far it seems that only Dakarai is showing signs of infection, but mites are known for spreading among the pack and being notoriously difficult to get rid of.

Mid Winter (Month 2)

I've begun to see signs of spread--the end of this month sees four of the five pack members infected and poor Ejiro, the only wolf capable of hunting these last couple weeks, is still suffering from an open wound and certainly not at 100% himself.

Notably, the new female, Swaran is showing signs of being in heat and this time not only is Itai the only one showing interest, but also Swaran isn't acting aggressive toward his advances. My hope is that this means the pack will see pups by spring, although I'm still unsure how Swaran ranks within the pack. Logically, she is, or at least will be, the pack's alpha female, but as of yet it still seems to be Itai and Dakarai holding dominance. Perhaps once the pups arrive Swaran will take a more active role among the pack.

Late Winter (Month 3)

Ejiro finally recovered from his open wound this month which is truly a relief after losing two pack members to similar injuries last season. The ear mites, of course, are still an issue and their presence means the pack has been unable to hunt at full strength for most of the winter. They are, however, still well-fed and seem to be adapting well to the changing group dynamics of the hunt. Actually, I might hazard a guess that not being able to hunt as a full group has helped Swaran improve relationships with the pack wolves on an individual level. It gives me hope that if, or when, she steps in as an alpha beside Itai it will not divide the pack.

Researcher's Notes

Early Spring (Month 1)

Swaran dug a new den near the end of this month! It was fairly obvious she was expecting puppies but I really can't hide my excitement that they'll be here soon. Of course the den is new--in their southern territory--which means no cameras or sneak peaks for me, but I'll get images just as soon as I can!

Mid Spring (Month 2)

Little of note has happened this month. Swaran is, of course, hidden away in her den with a new litter of puppies which I suspect have arrived by now. I rarely see her leave, and Itai has been faithful about bringing her portions of the pack's kills to eat.

The ear mites continue to bounce between the pack members but they're still making due with whomever is well enough to hunt. I've witnessed them returning to old kills a couple times this season which is moderately concerning considering spring is usually quite bountiful for them. Hopefully it's nothing more than bad luck combined with a lack of real stability for the hunters. On the bright side, it does seem to be giving the pack members an opportunity to gain some proficiency in different hunting roles!

Late Spring (Month 3)

Despite the den site in their southern territory of the coniferous, the pack has been traveling north back into the taiga to hunt this month. I can't say exactly why they're making the effort yet--after all, hunting further north is more difficult and they do not have a full hunting team (although for the last several weeks only Levon has been showing signs of the mites he is undoubtedly the pack's best stalker). Their prey has been smaller and Levon has consistently been left with nothing to eat by the time he reaches the pack's kill. Fortunately he seems to be scavenging successfully but I cannot understand why they are traveling so far from the den site.

I have some good news though--I was able to glimpse the puppies! They are still quite small but I glimpsed them on a rare occasion that Swaran left the den and from what I can see it's a litter of four healthy pups. I'm very excited to see more of you next season, little ones!

October 11 - 16, 2023

Researcher's Notes

Early Summer (Month 1)

There is very exciting news this month. Levon, the last pack member showing signs of ear mites at the end of spring, now appears to be completely clear of mites and I see no other signs of them within the pack. With newborn pups, it's such a relief to see the pests gone and all pack members able to hunt again!

And, of course, the pups! They weaned a couple weeks ago and have been exploring outside the den when their mother Swaran goes to hunt with the pack. She was injured at the beginning of the season, I could only guess how that happened as I rarely saw her leave the den while the pups were nursing, but seems to be reveling in her freedom to run around more and appears to be doing quite well despite the wound.

There are four total pups, three males and a female, and I've named them as follows: Samira, the steele colored female with brown eyes and cream unders; Kunal, an ashen male with haunting pale eyes and subtle white markings; Amar, a gray male with cream unders like his sister and pale eyes like his brother; and Raj, a gravel colored male with his mother's smokey eyes.

Samira seems to be the most confident and outgoing of the pups, in addition to currently being the largest of them. Raj is most certainly the smallest and doesn't seem to be growing at the pace of his other siblings, though he certainly has enough energy to keep up with them! Kunal seems to be the more reserved of the bunch, though far from shy, and Amar is probably the litter's troublemaker. He is a bit more prone to playing rough or outright aggression, though his siblings don't seem to mind his antics, yet.

Mid Summer (Month 2)

Swaran recovered from her wound early this month, though honestly she acted as though she weren't hurt at all. Hunting has gone a bit better so far this season although the large elk and moose they were used to seem to be a rarity now.

As soon as the pups were able enough to travel the pack moved north into the taiga where they have been hunting and I believe I've discovered why--a rival pack has expanded their territory within the coniferous and the Greyfeathers seem to have abandoned that area to the rivals completely. Although the rival pack is a fair deal smaller than the Greyfeathers (only a breeding pair and their adult daughter), I suspect our pack abandoned the territory to make sure their pups weren't caught in any kind of crossfire. Although the taiga is a more difficult place to live and hunt, our pack has done it before and I don't expect any issues.

Late Summer (Month 3)

This last month of summer has been a quiet one. There was a brief recurrence of influenza but it passed so quickly it almost isn't worth mentioning (thank goodness!). The pups continue to grow and learn from their family. Levon, the eldest member of the pack, has been spending quite a lot of time with the pups and I expect they'll learn a lot from a wolf with so much experience!

With the pups more mobile and growing, Swaran has been taking on a more dominant role among the family members. She primarily shows aggression at feeding time--making sure the pups get a share--and it's nothing the pack has issue with so far. As I suspected though, the presence of the pups seems to be pushing her into more of an alpha role. The dynamics are still a little strange, but Dakarai does appear to be taking a step back the more Swaran steps up. I've taken the liberty of officially identifying the pack's alphas as Itai and Swaran; I belief that change is inevitable--but I do hope it continues to be a smooth transition.

Researcher's Notes

This season has been a fairly quiet one. The pups continue to grow, bigger by now and turning into lanky teenagers. Most notably, with the additional of four hungry and growing teens, the pack has not been eating as well as usual.

Ejiro, specifically, appears to be at the bottom of the totem pole when it comes to the pecking order and I witnessed him, on multiple occassions during the last few months, returning to one of the pack's old and rotting kills in order to fill his belly.

Dakarai also appears to have fully stepped back from any dominant role within the pack. Itai is now following Swaran's lead in enforcing that his pups eat before the rest of the pack but there don't seem to be any damaged relationships. Despite often remaining hungry after a kill is made, Ejiro remains with the pack and Dakarai as well shows no signs of departing. It's a relief to me to see the family sticking together as they will almost certainly do better with more experience to put toward their hunts.

Hopefully they pull through the winter and the addition of the pups as full, hunting members of the pack will strengthen the family as a whole.

October 23 - October 28, 2023

Researcher's Notes

Winter began with promise, however after only a few weeks in, things took a turn for the worse. Levon, the pack's eldest member, was injured in mid winter and around the same time the pack began to struggle to bring down prey. They went hungry for the following four weeks; I only witnessed the pups snacking on a small creature they managed to catch by chance.

They caught a lucky break in late winter when the pack managed to take down a couple caribou from a large herd (around the same time I saw signs that Alpha Swaran was in heat) but even the large kills were not enough to completely fill them after four weeks with naught.

Levon has not recovered from his injury yet and is looking very weak. I'm almost certain the pack will lose him despite the grace of spring being so close. Fortunately, the rest of the pack, though hungry, is not at risk of starving and the pups will soon be old enough to help with hunting. I also expect to see a new litter of pups this spring which will hopefully put the pack in a stronger position to maintain territory and possibly seek out better hunting grounds in the future.

Start of Winter (Oct 23)
  • All is quiet.

    • Hunting
      • Week 1: The pack hunts a porcupine. Ejiro remains hungry.

      • Week 3: The pack hunts down a mule deer.
      • Week 4: The pack hunts down another mule deer.

Mid Winter (Oct 25)
  • Levon is injured and has an open wound; he will have a scar on his hind leg.

    • Hunting
      • Week 5: The prey escaped!
      • Week 6: Once again the prey escapes. The pack remains hungry.
Illnesses
  • Open Wound - Levon (26 HP)

  • All is quiet.

    • Hunting
      • Week 7: The pack failed to bring down their prey but the pups managed to ambush a stoat while they were watching.
      • Week 8: The pack failed another hunt but the pups were able to catch a muskrat. The pack remains hungry.
