Dogs have an inherit understanding of human facial expression and body language. Even more interesting is that even young puppies have an understanding of what a human is likely feeling. Colonization of the United States indirectly caused many Native American dog breeds to go extinct. Many Native American dogs died from contracting illnesses from dogs brought over by colonists. If those dogs did not directly die from foreign disease, their breed became lost to time via crossbreeding with dogs from other countries. A few Native American dog breeds stayed relatively unchanged and they still exist today. Carolina dogs and Inuit sled dogs are examples of currently existing Native dog breeds. The Bonn-Oberkassel puppy is the oldest known dog ever discovered to date. The puppy was found in a quarry in Germany and was dated to be just over 14,000 years old at the time of it's discovery (1910). The French Mastiff has the shortest average life expectancy of any dog breed with an expectancy of only 5-8 years. A Great Dane comes close with a life expectancy of 8-10 years (with some reaching 12). For context, wolves in the wild typically live to be 7-8 years old, but can reach their late teens in captivity. Foxes (a much smaller and more vulnerable canine) in the wild can typically live to see their 4th birthday, but can live to be 13 in captivity. Domestic dogs cannot crossbreed with foxes, but can crossbreed with wolves and coyotes. Dog/wolf hybrids are outright banned in 12 U.S. states and 15 U.S. states require special permits and/or licenses to own a dog/wolf hybrid. Dog/coyote hybrids are uncommonly bred deliberately so very few U.S. restrictions exist for this specific type of hybrid. |
