I have only one question - what's meant by "diminishing returns" in the context of stat breeding? Like, more in detail, how futile is it?

And now he has basically a +3 on waiting, making it impossible to lose. (This is why some people like smarts!) The focus is there, but the box is too small to show it!

ohh this is neat, I always thought there was a limit on # of modifiers or maybe they weren't getting applied correctly. I didn't realize they still work even when they don't show up in the box.

what's meant by "diminishing returns" in the context of stat breeding?

Well, it can be pretty massive with ultra high stat wolves. We haven't worked out the formula yet, but perhaps these posts will give you some insight?

Stat formula if inheritance was linear

And an analysis of the highest-stat litter ever born (so far)

And  Lionel #34199 and yes! I am basing this on a bug report that's no longer viewable unfortunately, and the fact that if I have two bleeds and a lucky foot, I have never been injured by an enemy, and the odds of that are much too low to be anything other than a +3 modifier.

Oh that's really wild. I guess they wanted to make sure stats don't go over a certain "cap"? But that's moot theorizing.

If I had a NBW x NBW breeding of literally same stats as long lineage x long lineage breeding, would they both follow the same preditictions? Given they are of about the same stats both, and the only difference is lineage length?

I haven't taken detailed statistics on lineage vs inheritance but I haven't noticed it affecting anything - I am pretty sure it's only stats that affect the plateau / cap.

Hm, so it's less lineage affecting stat returns than parent stats affecting it, that makes sense.

Oh! I just realized that the way I worded that was confusing, thank you, I will change the guide. Yes I was meaning that if you max out that stats on each generation, the pups inherit less the higher the stats are. I think the same thing is happening to Dreamealker and he's still G1.

Edit: Ok! I changed it to say
If you start with lower stat parents (like NBWs), the pups will inherit a greater percentage of the parent's stats. This is because the stat inheritance formula begins to plateau once the combined parent's stats (for a single stat) get to about 400. Eventually you reach a point of diminishing return where a huge increase in parent stats results in a small increase in pup stats.

Because you're right, it's not necessarily the generation that matters, it's the total stats, and it's just easier to get higher stats on higher gens (because you are able to start higher)

Thank you! That point was confusing (and worrying) me just a bit, so that does indeed read clearer!
I've never had true stat monster wolves, and that's fine. I just want good enough woofers to live ok at Tundra >__>
