Training for Adults

Training for Adults

I so appreciate the pup and adolescent training mechanics. It feels so good to see an adol age up to gain stats leaps and bounds above birth stats. But that excitement doesn't last. I have already reached the point at which I cannot level up my wolves the way I would like – I barely have 40 wolves and there simply aren't enough jobs!

There is also the slight inconvenience that comes with attempting to have NBWs specialize in a certain role by gaining the corresponding stats. Either one has to live in one of the easy biomes to increase stats prior to leveling or have plenty of pups to train.

While increasing the number of scouts/herbalists or allowing multiple hunting parties at a time both would be helpful, both options present challenges with balancing game mechanics. Though such options would still be quite welcome, I would like to offer a different solution: training for adults.

The goal for adult training is simple - to offer a system that would allow all adult wolves the opportunity to gain stats and EXP every day. Such a system could be implemented in a number of ways:

Option #1 – Team Training
- Adult training could be team based and use mechanics identical to hunting. This would allow the coding for assignment of stat gains and the hunting interface to be reused and make it possible for teams created under hunting to seamlessly be "imported" to training and vice versa (provided all members were assigned the hunting role of course).

Unlike hunting, a team training session would require five members, manual setting of individual roles, have no chance of failure, and consume the entirety of a wolf's energy in exchange for a guaranteed stat increase and a significant EXP gain.

To prevent breaking the game, a training session would spend five of a team's hunting trips – limiting training sessions to two per day and preventing "doubling up". While multiple difficulty levels could be offered, higher difficulties would have to be unlocked through training on lower levels. Adolescents would not be allowed to shadow training sessions. The main trade off of adult training would be that one would exchange an increase in EXP earned for bringing back food. If that was still not enough of a trade-off, training sessions could cost food instead of bringing it in.

EDIT: To be clear, implementing the above would require that a wolf have the hunter role to participate in group training. It's possible that adjustments could be made to include unoccupied pupsitters, mentors, or herbalists through the addition of variations to the format (researching with Herbert for herbalists for example).

Option #2 – Individual Training
- Individual training could copy many of the mechanics of scouting and grant stat and EXP gains in a similar fashion based on the difficulty of the course. The system would allow one to select difficulty and target stat for training. To balance the game, wolves in training would not be able to complete other jobs, so this might require a new role of some kind. Training of this type would also consume an item similar to pup training.

As long as the system provided a way for all pack members to earn EXP and stats in a meaningful way without breaking the game or devaluing other roles it would be extremely helpful. Depending on the implementation, it could need only a few tweaks and changes or completely new coding and artwork.

The above-mentioned possibilities are certainly not the only ones. I would love to hear what others might think. Perhaps you all have options to share or can point out what makes this suggestion utter rubbish. ;D

Other important points:
EXP > Stat Gains

Thank you for your time!

I support this suggestion. One of my best hunters died today and I had to use a wolf that grew up just today, and he had absolutely no experience at all.
I think that this is a amazing idea, training adults as well as pups and adols. I think that would be easier than what I'm doing, which is having a main hunting party and a secondary hunting party with wolves with low experience.
I also think that along with this, there should be an update so that multiple hunting patrols can be sent out.

I think it's interesting, but! I think I'd like higher stats gain rather than increased experience. Since levels can be disappointing in the stats repartition and that increasing exp wouldn't solve the problem on hunting in easy biomes to avoid disappointing levels.

I had the same thought, but then I couldn't think of a way to balance the stats gained from training with actual jobs.

One solution I considered would grant group training EXP quantities similar to if they had gone hunting five times. The amount would the be based on the level of the training course - each directly relating to a trail size. The only exception to this would be the easiest course, which would grant stats over EXP for NBW training.

However, I'm not sure that this approach would balance the game well. The main goal of this suggestion is to provide a way to level wolves outside one's core scouts/hunters. If training became more reliable than hunting for leveling, some players might abandon hunting altogether in favor of training if they have the resources to buy food.

You do make a good point there.

That is a good Idea, But as you said It does feel really when the Adol's Age up and they get Bonus Stats..

I like this idea! I think a cool option would be to select one or two Mentors to attend say a hunting, scouting, or herbalist session to give the wolves completing the task an extra prof bonus/exp?
Or something of the sort, some sort of bonus to having a mentor attend.  Maybe with a Mentor present, (say scouting or hunting/foraging) they have the chance to find a trophy/item of some kind.

I like that suggestion! Bringing an item back might be too much of a buff to said jobs, but having the option to include a mentor able to buff stat or EXP gains is an appealing option.

Though while having a mentor serve as a guide would be really neat, I would hope to see it implemented with adult training to allow members outside my core wolves to engage in leveling. ;D

If you managed to scout a wolf ahead of their timetable (or to put it simply, level ahead), and they've managed to reach five years, as is often my case, you do have "core" Mentors sitting around, and you may not want puppies running amok to train (or have plenty besides). So, #488's  suggestion works for me, at least.

Overall, I do like the look of your idea, #11560, and have registered support.
