What would you like to see for an YWH or Art in general?
Posted 2021-10-20 07:46:23 (edited)

Don't be shy!  I'm open to hear your ideas any time!

I've been doing custom art for a while now but every time I come back from a break I find it really time consuming.  I have to start from a sketch for every single commission I do and then line art and coloring.  So I've been thinking about closing my custom art thread and opening an YWH.  However, I know there's already a lot of YWH so I decided to take this to the customer base.

What do you guys want to see in an YWH?  What pose?  How many wolves?  Headshot, Bust, or Full Body?

Just throw out any ideas!  Things you'd want to see as an option.  Is YWH even the right way to go?  I want options/suggestions!  Don't hold back!

Want to see examples of what I do?  Visit my Art Shop.

Additional Questions as more Ideas are Posted:
What would you guys want to see for profile icon art?  More of the same simple headshot?  Any emotions?  What kind of background, if any?
is there any demand for adult lethals (survivors) along with pup lethals or just the pup?  If there is, would you guys want an adult lethal option?
For banner art, how would you want the banner to look?
For Lethals: What would you guys want for poses?  Should I even bother with Brachies?

I have opened my new Shop!  Come check it out.

Oh, that's a smart idea to save up on some time!

I can't speak for other people but when I pay for YWH's, I typically go for fullbodies most often. If they're done for a standalone wolf, then I tend to prefer standing or 'action' poses so that more of the body (and summarily markings) are seen. The piece on my den page you made of Mekani is a pretty good example - it wasn't a YWH but I tend to prefer poses where the full body and a wide range of markings is seen, this is typically a sideways view!

That said, if I already have a lot of art of a certain wolf, then I prefer to go for what I think fits their specific character. For example, Aserith is a villain and tyrant, thus I prefer artwork that can show him being mean, menacing, wild, etc. Then you have a sweetheart like Valiant here, and most artwork I have of him is goofy, cartoony, and more juvenile in presentation.

For example, I would prefer artwork that can showcase wolves like Aserith growling, prowling, showing teeth, maybe looking battered or bloodied, etc. Headshots or fullbodies, really. On other hand, I'm fine with a wider range of options for Valiant; something more relaxed or goofy in terms of poses, even a more "chibi" style or a cartoony one would work because he's just a goodnatured ball of joy. It greatly depends on the individual wolf.

That said, a lot of YWH's are standalone. I've seen maybe two or three people do couple headshots/busts, and I've seen a total of two people doing art of more than two wolves at a time, and only one of these people did fullbodies. I think there's definitely a market no one is touching of scenes with multiple wolves interacting. In fact, if I can add an addendum to that, I've seen exactly zero combat scenes and I've gone out of my way to look for them.

Personally, I'd really like to see more options for:
- couples interacting (grooming each other, cuddling, playing, etc.)
- wolves with pups (moms/dads/pupsitters, doesn't matter!)
- groups (3 or more) of grown wolves interacting, snuggling, going about their day, anything really.
- battle! (1 injured wolf, a couple going at each other, a winner standing over the loser, etc.)
- ...puppies! Either solo or in groups, I'm weak to cute things.

I think you could also probably get a following for logos like the ones on your page as well! Always thought those looked really cool, they're stunning. :D

Thanks for the suggestions!  I love when people go in depth, I'll definitely look into it!

For my YWH Thread (if I decide to actually do it) I'd probably have multiple options.  I don't search around a lot for art myself but what I have seen are threads who either offer one YWH or a thread that offers a whole bunch.

With my current custom art thread, I do have couples, pups, 3 or more, and scenes (battle for example) as options but not as examples.  So I bet it's more of 'if I don't see it in examples, they don't offer it'.  So even though I do have an example for pups, it's not up there with the style options.  So I think that's why people don't commission me for those even though I offer them.

I've thought about logos!  I've seen at least one thread offering those and they seem to have a really good following!

I'll be glad if it's helpful! :D I hope more people contribute their advice!

I've definitely seen a variety, yes. Some threads only have one base and that works for them, while others have a wider range of them but that of course takes more drawing too! I've also seen artists who cycle through them - they'll have one base up until they get tired of doing it, then put another one up, and so forth. I'll be the first to admit that when I realised an artist was doing this, the child in me went "ooo, exclusives!" Because while they aren't custom pieces, they aren't indefinitely available either and I get a completely pointless sense of excitement from grabbing a "rare" piece (even if 20 other people have the same one, lmao).

I guess you could compare it to wolvden lethals - they're all the same base but a lot of us want at least one of each to call our own! Speaking of... I haven't seen YWH for lethals literally anywhere. I don't even know anyone that draws those in hindsight so there you go, an option lol.

That might be it! I remember messaging you about Sieger (the current blood/gore & anthro example), but on my end, it's mostly just to double-check if artists are comfortable with that kind of thing because it's an understandably iffy subject. I guess it might be somewhat helpful that people like me pester with a hundred questions if it helps you get new examples haha

If it helps any, I certainly plan to pester for more art whether or not you offer YCHs. :D
I'm just outta GC right now!

I've been in love with those on your page ever since I saw them, to be honest. I can't be the only person who saw that and thought "oh, those look awesome!"

That sounds like 'exclusives' definitely work lol!  Ooh yes, lethals.  I tried my hand at doing a polycephaly once, I couldn't finish it but it was probably because of the pose I chose, didn't give me much room to work with.  But that's definitely an option!

LOL pester away!

They work for me because I have the self-control of a three year old lol. I don't know about other people but there is something innately selfish in me that gets triggered by "ha! I got the rare thingie!" There wasn't always a base I liked but there was always an unspoken promise that if I waited for a few weeks or months or however long it took, there'd be something "rare" that I like and I can save currency for that!

I mean, the lunar event works roughly the same way. They give you a chance to get some rare trinkets, then switch things around soon after. There isn't much of the lunar event that I like thus far except that everyone else likes it enough to buy stuff from me, but new things keep coming up so those of us that don't enjoy a given thing can save up for the next thing in line! If it works for wolvden, it might for the players/artists too!

Lethals look hard to draw  so I don't blame anyone for not trying, failing, or refusing to. It's worth trying to do a doodle in your own time and seeing if it's overwhelming/annoying to do. It might be an easy way to earn money if you're the only one offering it, but it might also be a frustrating one because various bodyshapes are hard to account for.

TL;DR: Your art is fantastic but make sure you're not working yourself to the bone. Take it easy, your art's amazing and you don't have to add to your stress to do any specific thing! :D

That makes sense, when you compare it the lunar event.  It's a way that I'll definitely put as an idea, but it's probably not my style of doing things.  Only because of the amount of editing that goes into the thread when switching designs.  I'm getting better at this html coding but I still want to do a little editing as possible.  Though I could do it as a once in a while thing to get away from doing the same thing.  Instead of basing my entire thread around it by doing this periodically, I can do it every once in a while, therefore, it's actually exclusive.

Some main more in depth ideas:

- Female wolf looking down over her shoulder at a running puppy
- Conjoined Twins nipping at siblings ear
- Two wolves standing on their hind legs as they fight eachother, like a hug! But an angry one.
- Pack of walking wolves: pupsitter carrying a pup, large alpha male in the back, two adolescents walking/fighting with eachother in front
- Couple: Male Wolf has head resting on female's shoulders as the female looks back to him with smirk/lovey face

I personally LOVE ywh's and I'm usually always looking for them as I can buy multiple for my favorite pack members.
But I have been seeing the same ones recently just different art styles. So I'd definitely love to see some from you that brings a whole new batch of fresh YWH's!

LOL angry hug, if that's an option I do, I'm naming it that!  I'll definitely put those down as additions to existing ideas!

There have been some nice ideas already, but here are my two cents. There are two main types of YWHs that l personally look for:
- headshots to use as my avatar/tag
- fullbody groups to showcase my favourite wolves on my profile/den

I'm always on the look-out for nice YWH tags in particular, as they're one thing I change regularly to keep things feeling fresh/showcase my latest lead or stud. Having a few options with different moods/emotions would seem like a smart plan.
