☼ Lore Clan | May Flowers Event ☼

Everyone say hello to G'Paw!! Before elaborating on his backstory, I'd like to go over some thoughts I had over development. So far the entries have been some pretty serious wolves and I wanted to design a storyteller that's much more friendly and fun. Like a treasured grandparent, everyone loves good ol' G'Paw! Things uh, got a bit crazy when working on his backstory though, but I think it's an interesting story of what made this old wolf what he is today.

Backstory
Long ago, in an ancient forest, a lone wolf gave birth to an only son. The mother hadn't been in a proper pack in a very long time, and she wouldn't ever return to one for reasons no one will ever know. The wolf pup was raised by his mother, who tried her very best to train him to become a successful wolf, perhaps a wolf so great he would have the most massive pack and sire the most successful lineage known to all wolfkind! Unfortunately, she would not see such a day come, even if she lived further past her son's achievement of surviving to adulthood.

Alone, the wolf was afraid. Not knowing what else to do, he sought out a pack to find refuge. However, with every pack he encountered, he would be turned away. With every rejection, he would ask, "Why?" Answers varied. Some said nothing and only barked at him to never return. Other times, he would only be attacked; no further warning necessary. Eventually, he started to hear answers.

"You smell of your mother." Leaders would growl to him.

"My mother? What has she done?" He would plead, wanting to know what happened for his mother to shiver at the notion of reuniting with any pack. What followed, though, would remain with him for the rest of his life.

The answers were never the same.

"She lied." One wolf would say.

"She was a traitor!" Another would bark.

"She was nothing more than a free-loading tramp." Many would huff.

"She was conspiring against our kind," some would snarl.

"With bears."

"With cougars."

"With blasted coyotes!"

The lone wolf was shocked. How could so many rumors surround a single wolf? Would he ever know the truth about his mother? After many moons of rejections, beatings, and winding tales, he concluded that he wouldn't. The only wolf who could have ever told him the truth was his mother, and she was dead. The wolves in the other packs were too filled with hatred and animosity towards her. They vilified her at any chance, frequently in contradicting ways!

Knowing this, he left the forest. The packs would never accept him anyway, and if they did, he wasn't sure if we would be able to take all of the lies. He set off to find some other pack to call home, and eventually, he did. It was a small pack, but a kind one. He was fed, played with, and respected. He loved to look after the pups, and he loved to tell them stories! While in the pack, he would also be told many stories, both directly by a resident storyteller and indirectly through overhearing some sensitive information whispered among the residents. He was content; he found a home. However, his past as a nomadic lone wolf kept him from settling with this peaceful pack. At night, it would roar at him to leave, that the pack would turn on him soon and drive him away. Eventually, it became too much to bear, and he left the pack to live by his lonesome once again.

Nevertheless, he was unable to find peace as a lone wolf as well. He was terrified of being alone. He had to fight to survive day after day after day. It was a hungry, lonely existence. Another kind pack with far eventually found him and took him in. Once again, with pups to entertain, he would tell them all the stories he knew, including the ones he learned while staying with the old pack. He was happy again until his past reared its ugly head and drove him away into the cold wilderness once more.

The cycle would repeat itself for many seasons. Be accepted, tell stories, learn stories, run away, be alone, be found, rinse, and repeat. Over those seasons, as he grew older and wiser, the pain of his past faded. He would still leave his packs, but not out of fear. It was just what he did, just a simple routine. He loved to learn and tell stories. He figured there was no point in staying with a single pack if he wanted to continue to learn and tell them.

He was just like his mother; he concluded one night. He belonged to no single pack. However, unlike his mother, he belonged to many packs—more packs than he could've imagined as a pup. And he recently learned these packs loved him. Many moons ago, he stopped running away without notice. He learned to tell the other pack members that he could not stay and thanked them for their kindness. Often, the pack would embrace him one last time with many howls before sending him off with good wishes (and some chunks to take for the road).

He has never told any pack of his true name. He has gone by many names, though they were always temporary, and he was never fond of them. As he grew older, one name would stick more than others. Once, while joining a new pack, the eager pups saw him and cried out in excitement, "G'PAW!" Noticing his bewilderment, the other pack adults explained that their resident elder had gone by that moniker, though he had passed away a season ago. With all of the pups already set on this new name, he supposed it was fair enough and accepted it.

The many next times he joined a pack and was asked for his name, he would reply, "Why, I'm G'Paw, of course!"

SCREAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM

The feels this gave me I haven't felt since I read To Kill a Mockingbird, and from me, that's very high praise. I don't even know who I want to vouch for, who I want to come out happy: they're all so terribly flawed and despite being wolves they feel so human and relatable.  This is an amazing entry, Eri, and I look forward to reading more from you! c:
