SunFlame is the daughter of the Great Flame and his lifemate, Sunshine, the founders of the large pack that she now leads. She and her brother Sun Burn became the center of their father’s world when their aged mother passed in her sleep, curled up beside her mate and cubs.

Flame raised his pups to be Co-Leaders, and yet as he watched his pups grow it became clear to the stoic old wolf that his daughter would lead his pack on his passing. Although humbled when his daughter, who reminded him so much of his beloved mate, Flame could not have been prouder when she challenged him for the Pack and honestly won.

SunFlame always knew that one day she would lead the Pack, especially when she started taking the challenges to her sire as his second and strongest Beta. Once she realized her sire and Leader had the greyest muzzle, the stiffest walk of all the old grey muzzles, it was with a heavy heart that she and Sun Burn come to the conclusion that she needed to challenge her father before some unseasoned idiot did so and took over the Pack their parents had built.

SunFlame knew better than not to give her all when she challenged Flame, for although old, Flame was still a cunning and fierce fighter.

On Flame’s passing, Sun Burn became her chief advisor, even if all he ever amounted to was an Omega. After several seasons, Sun Burn became restless. Once more with a heavy heart, SunFlame watched a member of her family pass on, only this time there was no death. She watched Sun Burn follow the Great Migration, looking for new adventures.

Wishing him well, hoping to see him again once more, SunFlame assured her brother that he would always have a home among Flame’s Rangers. It was during this time that she also acquired her strange companion, a flying lizard, she named Burn after her little brother.

Burn too, was following the Great Migration. He claims to have followed the great herds through a rift between the real world and that of the Dream world. Saying that he is young and one day will fly through the great sky so big that Sunflame will fit in his front hand…. Hand, whatever that is. At first she thought the little lizard was crazy, however now, after he took her through the rift on the nights of the full moon, SunFlame wonders if she may be a bit Moon Mad.

“We cannot keep this up”. This was the phrase being passed around the great Phoenix pack, muttered from wolf to wolf. One exhausted hunter would turn to another and say it; the wounded hunter to the herbalist; the tired herbalist to the alpha; the stressed alpha to the scout. The pack was exhausted, it’s stores depleted of food and toys, relying on other packs to sustain their existence. Pups were starving and dying; the hunters and scouts trod home on weary, battered paws; and the herbalists fur was always full of leaf scraps from constantly healing her pack. Alpha Painted Sunset watched watched their pack struggle, until they finally called for a move. Every day for weeks, they traveled to the grasslands to battle packs that had made their home there, to nest out competition for the great Phoenix pack. Hungry mothers and hungry pups traveled together, with the hunters keeping them safe, and the Alpha leading the way. Fiery Illusions and the scouts went ahead, finding supplies, food, and a potential new home for the pack. They traveled for days, but they finally settled down mid-spring in a cave system in the grasslands. Prey was plentiful, the fishing was good, and herbs were abundant. The migration of the pack paid off, and they were soon able to eat well again. The struggles of the pack was forever memorialized, and the story of hardships and travels are lt old to every generation of pups, to remind them what happens to a pack that can’t take care of their own.

Compass paced the outskirts of the Order. They were still new here, many of them still training. Only recently had he begun sending the scouts out beyond the forests, grassland, and mountains. Even now, he found himself missing the shade and shelter of the place he’d first started his pack. While the mountains certainly provided plenty of caves and dens to call home, it brought far more risk for the few puppies they’d brought into this world or adopted from other packs. One wrong step and they might simply slide off the edge before Mist or Bat could catch them or even see they were in danger. At least in the forest, he and the pupsitters knew how to counter almost any dangers they might find.

A blissful distraction came in the form of the hunters, all wolves he'd met while exploring save for his dear friend Map, bringing back their prey. The small doe seemed like it should take more than one wolf to drag. Unsurprisingly, Frolic ever so stubbornly dragged it alone. A soft red now spread across her. Not blood, he realized, but almost certainly another new marking. How these markings appeared on her baffled him. When they'd first met, she'd been a soft cream with a lightly shaded back and lines of white along her undersides. Then it'd been a touch of grey on her back, such a small thing he almost hadn't noticed. Then her neck had darkened, another easy to pass off change.

Now this. This couldn't be missed. The color reminded him of the clay he'd accidentally wandered into far too many times while exploring. She caught his look as the excited hunters approached but said nothing, an amused glint in her eyes. "A good catch, that should keep us well fed. Take it over to the bureau, the scouts should be coming back from their morning patrol soon and Aspen hasn't eaten yet either," he fell in stride with Map as the group headed for the central cave and lowered his voice, "What happened with Frolic?"

She headed him off toward a small clearing, briefly calling back to the other hunters to let them know she'd catch up with them later. Her attention returned to Compass, "I'm not sure. I saw her slip away for a moment when the chasers were just starting but I was still helping them stay on track. She came out of nowhere when it was her time, that doe never saw her coming. Neither did any of us." Both contemplated the potential reasons for this. Both knew Frolic to be excellent at what she did. Yet these markings unnerved them. They appeared out of nowhere, just as she had. This most recent one in particular couldn't be passed off as aging or the coat lightening in the sun. Map reported guiding them through several streams and rivers, claiming it was to cool off. The clay-like marking remained.

"I suspect there's something quite wrong with this place," Compass finally admitted. He'd been trying to hold off his suspicions. After all, what did he have to base them on? A gut feeling, the sensation of somebody else watching over his shoulder, even the day to day sameness he felt exploring. How many times had he seen that toad? How many groundhogs had screeched at him? And that adorable little pika, surely there couldn't be that many of the little creatures with their shocking ways!

"I agree. We were talking about it while we were heading out, and we'd like to move back home."

Compass stopped dead in his tracks, not entirely believing that she agreed. That all of the Ladykillers agreed. "I-okay. I'll talk to the scouts when we get back and see what they think. Maybe they'll have an idea of how many wolves we'll have to clear out to get back in there, or can check next time they go out."

"Thank you," she briefly nuzzled his neck before trotting off to find the hunters.

Compass made his way back toward the bureau, weary from the adventures of the day. A quick nap, then he would talk with Adventure or Frost. It was time to go home.

-----------------------------------

Hopefully this fits the theme? It's a small piece of an ongoing story I've been loosely plotting before this, starting with Compass' leadership early in the Order as they're trying to find the right spot to live as well as a series of smaller changes which are leading to the big impact event that changes the pack quite a lot. All wolves this early in the plot are in my Dynasty and linked at the first mention of their name.

4/5 submissions for 14 June

A question: if I'm writing the smaller changes which play a part/lead up to the big change, do those qualify?

@ChildoftheDoes I'm afraid I don't understand the question- Do you mean does a series of small events that cause a larger event qualify for the theme?

Next part of the ceremony!

Marredud sharly inhaled when he saw everyone looking at him. The pack had gathered here, in a small valley, to watch the ceremony and celebrate afterwards. The wind felt cold, as winter came upon them. It wouldn’t be long before it started to snow, he could smell it in the air. He felt shy suddenly. The pack was still young, Nightwish had started it and was the first, and thus only, leader the pack had known. Back then, it was just her, her mate Mohawk, and their two pups Maze and Maria. Now the pack counted 31 members. This would be the first ‘change of leadership’ ceremony of the pack. He and Nightwish had spent a couple hours on how to approach it. In the end, they decided to keep it simple.

Nightwish took a step forward and jumped on an old tree stump that stood in the shades of some trees. Everyone went quiet and looked at her. Nightwish smiled, but it was with a hint of sadness.
‘Today is a day of mixed emotions for me’ she began. ‘As you all know, I am still grieving the loss of my mate, Mohawk, who went to the Heaven Realms eight days ago’. He saw that Nightwish struggled a little to find her next words. Marredud stared at the ground, feeling that raw pang of sadness come over him as he thought of the wolf he saw as his father. He saw his siblings struggle too. Nightwish continued with her speech.

‘But today is also a day for celebration. As I am old, it is time for someone to become my successor. I’ve thought long and hard, but in the end, there was one wolf that I felt would be the best leader for you. Marredud, please come up here’.

Wolves turned their heads to look at him. He stood up and walked to his leader with confidence in his stride. At least he hoped it looked like confidence. Nightwish jumped off the stump and then he jumped up. Nightwish put her paws up to the stump and he bowed his head a little, so she could press her nose to his. Then she pulled back and watched him.
She gave him a reassuring smile and he started speaking the sentences they practiced.

‘I, Marredud, shall take upon me the responsibilities of leadership. I solemnly swear to take good care of our pack, by making sure there is food and space for everyone. I will listen to your worries and consider your suggestions seriously. I promise to be the best leader I can be for you, until the day of my retirement. If you do not wish me to be your leader, speak up now’.

He looked at each wolf. Then Nightwish said, loud and clearly, ‘I accept you as my leader’ and bowed. Every wolf in the pack repeated her line and bowed for him. He felt dizzy. He was their leader now! He jumped off the tree stump, shaking a little. Nightwish pressed her body to his. ‘Congratulations, Mar’ she said warmly. She took a step back and then he felt something slamming into his side. The striking blue eyes of his younger sister, Alluvium, stared at him. ‘Congrats Mar! I knew you would do it! You’ll be a great leader’ she said enthusiastically. His other younger siblings, Akdalaite and Almandine, also came over and nudged him with their nose to congratulate him. ‘Now now, behave a little’ their mother said laughingly. Maze and Maria, his older siblings, and their partners came over to wish him the best of luck. Even though they all still mourned the loss of Mohawk, it now was indeed time to celebrate a new beginning.

@Goose - Yes!

My plan was to write each smaller event, ie the early pack preparing to move back to the deciduous forest, major (change related) parts of different key wolves' lives, that sort of thing, before getting in to the big pack change. Kind of like the exposition/rising action part before the climax I think? Wording questions well (and apparently anything right now goodness) isn't my strong suit, sorry about that.
