Snake Quest Re-Work

Snake Quest Re-Work
Posted 2021-01-20 14:49:53 (edited)

Hello! So if you're looking at this, you're either really curious about what I mean, or possibly know what I mean. We all know that the snake can sometimes give some very wacky quests, but we usually are able to complete them.

However, chances are you probably know someone who got a quest for one or more large carcasses, or one or more carcasses for something..... No one has yet really seen in game, or isn't on the TC. Well, this happened to happen to me today (01/20/2021). Today, I got my quest and I was to give the snake a dandelion, a caribou cow and a caribou bull carcass. At first this only frustrated me as I have recently moved to the Tundra, so my hunters haven't even gotten anything above a critter trail yet. But then, curiosity got the better of me and I looked in the Item Catalogue, to see that caribou cow carcasses have yet to show up in someone's hoard/in game, and there are only five caribou bulls in game, as of 01/20/2021. (Pictures down below)

So my idea is perhaps to have the snake change it's quests. Make it so the snake doesn't request carcasses unless there's more than 100 of them appearing in game, (I had looked, and none of the caribou bulls showed up on the TC) or something of the sort. It just does not feel fair that we have a chance of getting something for a quest that has yet to show up in game! Now I'm lucky to have been an EA player, so my wolves have some experience with hunting. However, from what I've from the most part seen, is the snake doesn't really hold back for new players. So imagine someone logging on for their second day and getting a request for an alligator carcass or something.

I think a lot of us would appreciate perhaps having the snake request no more than one large carcass at a time, or even requesting carcasses as you completely explore new biomes. (If it doesn't already, I don't often get item request quests)

Screenshots, as of 01/20/2021

Also, if you do end up getting absurd quests like this, feel free to either send me the screenshots so I can add them up here, or add them yourself down in the comments!

Addition 01/20/2021, 3:04 PM MST, courtesy of ThatCorgi- Making it so after you've used a Snake Skull on a snake, you don't get the same items requested, ie, using a snake skull to remove a caribou carcass, and getting a request for a caribou carcass on the next quest.

I had a quest for a Caribou cow carcass after moving to Taiga. I was very fortunate that I sent my scout to rescout the Taiga and she came back with one!

^ I second this notion. Within my first week, I had a quest for a Bison carcass, and I had yet to have encountered bison or heard of bison, and was unable to find any in the tc that were within a newbie's price range. I don't mind more difficult snake quests but I don't think they should ever feel impossible for a player.

Absolutely supporting this. I've had to get alligator carcasses for the snake quest twice now, and I've never yet caught one naturally - I'm very lucky that I managed to find them through the specific quest item-giving events in Explore, and even then it was after pretty much spending the whole day going through them to mostly end up with duplicates of the other, more common items. Looking at the item catalogue and trading center now, there are only 29 alligator carcasses in game (still more than 0 and 5 for the adult caribou carcasses, at least?) and none of those are available on the trading center. I definitely agree that snake quests shouldn't be as hard as they quite frequently can be at the moment.

I very much support this! Shortly after moving to the Taiga (I moved out of it soon after), I got a quest to get a Caribou Bull carcass, along with something else. Knowing I wouldn’t be able to do this because my hunters weren’t that good, I bought a snake skull, changed the quest, but the next quest I got requested the same thing. It also told me to get a Caribou Bull carcass, so I had to buy another snake skull, which, thankfully, changed the quest to a decent one that I could do.

I’d want to add to your post that once you use the snake skull on a collection quest (a quest where you have to collect certain items), the Quest Snake should not be able to request any of the previous items. It’d really help me and others finish quests easier!

Will do that Corgi! I def didn't think of that, but I've had the same thing happen to me! I think it was also a caribou bull or calf, that I had snake skulled and got it again

The devs were aware of this, problem when they first made those quests, thats why there are explore encounters that give items for your quests some of which only give items when you have a fetch quest

Some examples are following along the basillisk lizard and the whats that encounter with the snake

In addition ide argue that fetch quests with these items are a amazing way to farm for lots of food/amusement

i got a request for bison the other day and managed to get like 6 bison carcass from the quest encounters and it was 👌

You also get quest items from re-scouting, Keiser has given an example.

Ah with the snake, something I and many people have a problem with (something at least my friends have told me and I've experienced), is that if it's multiple items needed, we've often got the more common items, like herbs or feathers, rather than the carcasses. Yeah, you can get the carcasses, but in my experience, I've more likely and commonly gotten herbs and amusement items than carcasses, so the snakes and basilisk lizards aren't very helpful for me. And yeah, I mean if the rng is on your side, using those are a very cheesey way to farm food and amusement, but even when I lived in the mountains, I was getting the snake maybe once or twice every full energy bar. So simply saying "use the snake or lizard" is a bit unfair, considering not everyone has the luck of getting those all the time and the luck of getting those rarer items
