The Addition of Some Strictly Breed Only Combo Markings!

The Addition of Some Strictly Breed Only Combo Markings!
Posted 2020-12-07 21:25:02 (edited)

This may be an unpopular opinion but I figured I'd suggest it anyway...

So, as we all know we all have access to "combo marks" which is amazing. However, they're not exclusively linked to breeding.  All current combo markings are available through Random Marking Applicators or Total Shuffles (although not necessarily as simple as that, they do cost a fair bit to achieve sometimes).

I'm not necessarily complaining we have access to these combo marks through RMAs/Total Shuffles. I have benefited from this and been lucky enough to get multiple combo markings through RMAs and total shuffles (albeit after a lot of cost). I'm also not suggesting all combo markings be strictly limited to breeding - I think it's great we can get some of these through RMA/TS! It's fun to try for, kind of like a lottery!

However, I do think in the future - going forward that if more combo marks are added to the site some should be strictly exclusive to only able to be achieved via breeding. I think it may add an extra element of challenge and something to achieve via breeding. Also, it may to a limited extent, help with the pup market in terms of people maybe being able to profit because these markings may be rarer to achieve through breeding only.

I've been thinking about this for a while and I'm not sure if many will agree or if there's already a post similar to this, but I figured I'd put this out there anyway!

Again, to clarify: I'm not suggesting these changes now. The current combo marks (Auburn, Deira, Dinar, Doubloon, Ducat, Sepia, Silver, Tuff, Silver, Sterling, Zircon) achievable through the grove items are really appreciated and enjoyed. They also have already have been achieved countless times. However, going forward, I'd love to see a few combo marks that are strictly breed only.

I will be interested to see other people's thoughts on this! Thank you for taking your time to read this post ^u^

Agreed. While I enjoy that the "combo" markings are so easy to get (because I want them), it is a bit disheartening that there isn't anything in the game right now that is rare/hard to get. While the combo marks are difficult to breed, they seem to be relatively common in Grove marking applicators. With the amount of people RMA-ing and Total Shuffling, there are multiple studs for most combo marks. All of the markings seem to pass very easily at the same rates, so the combo marks and RMA only marks are super easy to get if anyone sets a wolf with it as a stud. The tier II bases are also very easy to get. The breed-only bases don't seem to be any rarer than the regular bases when breeding so they aren't very special to get either.

I do enjoy the NBW exclusive markings, but those are also attainable in the RMA/Total Shuffle database and quickly became common and worth very little compared to regular markings.

The hererochromatic eyes were a nice recent addition as they seem to be more difficult to breed for, plus mutations are decently difficult to get right now so they are more fun to try and breed. Tier III bases, when they get added, seem to present a challenge to breed as well.

So yes - I very much support Combo ONLY markings! The only valuable things right now seem to be mutations and stats - because those take time and effort to obtain. The market is very flat right now, because anyone can breed almost any base/marking/eye colour with little effort.

Support! There's no real challenge to them. I'd also love for the NBW exclusive marks to be exclusive and not obtainable via RMAs/Shuffle. Else there's little point to them.

I thought they were already breed only. Guess I've had bad luck with RMAs lol. That explains why I've seen g1s with combo marks.

I support anything that makes breeding mechanics more interesting and something I can put thought and planning into, and this suggestion counts! Support!

I absolutely agree! Allowing every mark to be obtainable with RMAs contributes to devaluing wolves with higher generations and makes NBWs even more disproportionately valuable than they already are. This is really unsatisfying because you can make a bunch of money by sheer dumb luck instead of through patience and dedication of having an actual breeding project. There's nothing you can get on a higher-gen wolf that you can't get with a G2, or even a G1 in most cases since albinism and melanism are the only things that don't show up in NBWs. But even that has proliferated to the point that it's hardly worth carrier checking NBWs because it doesn't add enough value to make up for the thousands of SC you'll have to spend to get one.

It makes it harder to stick around long term because although I want to continue the lineage of my high stat hunters that I have become attached to, no one buys them. It's disheartening when I am excited about a certain family only to have them fester on the TC for what I think is a fair price and then have to chase them because no one wants them.

I think having some goal you can actually breed for and not just throw a bunch of money at would greatly improve the wolf market and make it so that higher generation wolves could actually be sold and appreciated!

Similar ideas have been suggested Here and Here and I thoroughly agree with the idea.

I agree with it as well. I specifically bought two pups with new raffle marks with the intend to breed the available combo markings with them and before any of them had their first litter on the ground, a g1 stud already had the marking applied via Rma. Made my whole project useless because the market is now flodded with pups from the stud.

I didn't think of it from that angle because I totally forgot, but that's a great point! I really like the Auburn wings marking, but once it was released I didn't even bother try to breed it because it was able to be immediately applied with RMAs. I also didn't try to RMA it either because I knew the chances for me to get that specific mark were abysmally low. But across all RMAs used by everyone across the site, I knew it was a real possibility. Then I could just breed to that stud or buy that wolf for the mark I want.

This also makes raffle studs not very exciting either, because with a stroke of luck someone could make an even better "raffle stud" than the official ones, who are always T2 with low stats.

It discourages me from keeping a lot of pretty wolves because all your effort and dedication can be nullified with a single click. I understand the point of RMAs is to have a low chance to pass a rare mark, because otherwise no one would use them, and the site needs people buying GC to stay in business. But it seems like a shortsighted decision to me, because there isn't much to work for long-term other than stats, and the grind on that is so painfully slow that it doesn't appeal to most players.

This thread and similar ones brought up by Websteak deserve more attention. It seems to have been neglected and the game has developed in the opposite direction: when sass had asked to make further combo markings breed only, the 9th raffle stud was customized with a few of them including Silver Lupos which received plenty of negative feedback from users caring about this combo marking.

The thing is, this issue doesn't seem to be popular enough to appeal to. We've been playing as if combo markings were as any other type of markings, most players don't even know that combo markings are bred from different colors or the markings are simply not cared about, divergent from our set playstyles.

To the thread itself I'd like to add that unlike other types of markings, making combo ones breed only still makes it possible to get any marking in any slot starting with plain wolves.
