[explore encounter] defuse and befriend!

while i was exploring, i had an interesting thought that could make some unique gameplay and make room for some interesting lore for players!

enemy wolf encounter


we all know for each biome there is a lone wolf battle encounter! i was thinking a little about our befriending system and thought that the encounter could be a little expanded on.

enemy wolf encounters are just another part of exploring, but how interesting could it be for there to be a chance to turn these wolves into your friends? that is where "defuse" comes in!

about "defuse"


i would like to suggest a randomly generated chance to "defuse" the fight (added for clarification: the "fight" button would still be there, but "defuse" would be an alternate option). if successful, it would load up a befriending wolf screen as a chance to invite the wolf into your pack.

the chance for defusion could be randomly generated as well, or maybe the chances for it could be tied to something like wisdom. nonetheless, it would not be a guarantee that this option is successful! if "defuse" failed, it could trigger the fight encounter anyways or maybe the enemy wolf flees.



this is a little sloppy of an edit ;u;

the "defuse" option, i think, could take about 2%-4% of energy.

the "defuse" encounter option would be considered rare, though i'm not sure how the percentages of explore encounters work. once i do some research on it, i could expand on the percentages more!

Shiba (#19068) suggested in chat that it could be a lead talent buff that i could imagine being under the same tier as body language, or a tier after that. i liked this specifically because it would mean that "defuse" would not only need to be worked towards, so it couldn't be accessed too easily.

  • suggestion made by Trippy (#123143) for the "defuse" option to possibly linked to karma?

  • suggestion made by foehn (#3596) to add a chance for an additional encounter after a battle such as ''wolf was impressed by your skills, they want to get to know you better". this would also be an optional befriending button.
    • suggestion made by blacklight (#131787) that after the battle, if the wolf has successfully been defused and befriended, the wolf joins the pack with low (or 0) hp and a possible injury.

  • suggestion made by Shroobin (#115845) that using pacifist options in battle (ex. tumbling, resting, and waiting) could effect the chance of the defusing option to appear at the end of battle.

  • suggestion made by blacklight (#131787) that if defuse is successful, the befriending encounter would start with 1 red arrow, adverse to an effect available as a talent.

I wouldn't mind some more flavor to encounters. Why not? *shrug*

I personally wouldn't be affected because I have my talents set to reveal NBW personality etc and I play to befriend if I want to or I attack if I want to or leave. However, there are times where I certainly DO INDEED want to fight and defeat a wolf (for moving biomes) or if they are above a certain level for stat gain or trophy chance. I wouldn't really want and NBW outside of the choices I made already, I don't think (personally). But I'm sure some would like it. And I like knowing and seeing that IΒ  have choices available, even if I'm not interested in them myself ^_^

So, I would hope the option to diffuse would be just that, an option; and not a forced chance to befriend for those who don't want a random NBW. But I don't see a drawback if the chance is low enough to make it a special thing :)

On a random side note, since there was recent discussion on a karma system. Perhaps the chance of encountering this option could be tied to karma???

yes it'd definitely be just an option to diffuse. it'd be an added button next to the "fight" button - and def. would be a super low chance of encountering.

the idea of it being tied to karma isn't a bad one tho tbh. i guess it would all depend on how the karma system works, though

Sounds like a good idea. Also, I think you mean defuse, not diffuse. Diffuse is to spread over a wide area, while to defuse is to calm down a tense situation.

I love the idea, and, once defused, to make it different from a a normal NBW encounter, the wolves you meet could have some specific traits.
Maybe a chance of event markings, or even better, higher stats (all NBWs have such low stats it's frustrating!)

I'm not a fan of the karma idea so I'd rather it not be linked to that, but linking the chance it to wisdom would be good, as would be increasing the chance with a talent.

personally, i don't agree w there being a chance for event markings or higher stats
i don't think the encounter should change the existing nbw system (markings/stats/chased chances), but i've put your suggestion in the changelog for others to view as well :D

Yes, I love this idea. Similarly if there was also a small chance of befriending after defeating an enemy wolf, like 'wolf was impressed by your skills, they want to get to know you better' then leads to befriending screen. Would like to see more chances to go from fighting to befriending like there is befriending to fighting.

I also don't think there should be a chance for better wolves this way. Having more ability to encounter befriendable wolves is already a big buff
