Cuan tilted his head, the confusion settling in. Beside him, Blaine's ears were perked all the way up. They were too big on her head, the others used to say before they came to the sanctum. He thought everyone else's ears were too small.
In front of them, Tarnei, the sanctum herbalist, narrowed his eyes. "Does... that make sense?" he asked gruffly.
No, Cuan thought to himself.
"So me and Cuan aren't actually brother and sister?" Blaine asked, paws shuffling a little as she tried to hide her clear discomfort.
Tarnei's face twisted into something awkward. "No, you are."
Cuan's lip curled with his utter bepuzzlement. "But you just said we have different fathers."
"Spiritually," Tarnei said, like he was clarifying something. His tail had started twitching and Cuan recognised that as the warning sign it was --- he was getting frustrated. But he and Blaine still didn't understand!
"You're bad at this." From the edge of the conversation, a large wolf whose dark fur was mottled with several shades of black and white, straightened and nudged Tarnei's shoulder with his nose. It was an affectionate gesture that Cuan had seen one of the hunters do to his mate Favir back in the Nursery den. Maybe this wolf was Tarnei's mate.
"Excuse me?" Tarnei glared at the male.
"I know your brain is frazzled from sniffing herbs all day. Here." The newcomer turned to Cuan and Blaine, who were looking on, very lost. "I'm Mex, I don't think we've talked yet! You're both the most polite pups I've ever met."
"Mother used to say if we weren't polite the others would tell us off," Blaine said, by way of explanation. Cuan nodded frantically.
Mex's muzzle twisted like he was trying to force a chuckle and then he shook his head. He was favouring his back paw -- maybe he'd injured it. This was the herbalist's den, after all. "What Tarnei means to say is, your parents are still your parents, and you're both actually brother and sister. But spiritually, the demi-gods have chosen you as their respective children. They've bestowed you with their heritage."
Oh. "So... We have three parents?" Cuan clarified.
Mex brightened. "Yes. You two are smart!"
Blaine and Cuan grinned at each other. They'd never been called smart before! "Thank you!" Cuan said hurriedly to Mex, and then nodded at Tarnei.
"Scurry along, you're taking up space," Tarnei said, stepping forward and ruffling each of their heads with a paw. He had a grumpy face, but there was something about his face that eased Cuan's heart -- he wasn't really in trouble. Tarnei was just like that. "Go on, go play."
They did just that. Before he could leave, Cuan looked over his shoulder. He spotted Mex nosing behind Tarnei's ear with a fond smile on his face and tilted his head. "Do you guys loooove each other?" he asked, a sheepish grin forming on his face.
They both went wide-eyed and began to stammer half-answers, looking at each other like they expected the other to know. Cuan frowned. "Don't you know if you love each other or not?" he asked, and the only answer he got was more stuttering and floundering. He understood them though, and suddenly felt bad. "It's okay!" he assured. "Sometimes I don't know things either."
Then, he turned and raced after his sister.
