The sun was setting beyond the treetops; already Blaine's headache was subsiding. The blaring sun was no good on her eyes, she was always straining to see in the daytime.
Tarnei had concluded it to be the nature of her abnormal irises, perhaps a direct byproduct of being the daughter of the Winter Demi-god Gaimhreaf. The more she heard about her apparent father -- who was different to her biological father, according to anyone who knew anything about the Deities -- the more she felt like she'd done something wrong. Everyone respected her for her relation to him, but all it ever felt like was a curse.
It didn't matter all that much to her. So she had to readjust her life a little to avoid some throbbing headaches, it could be worse! Night was more peaceful than day anyway, with the hooting owls in the distance and the moon that she could stare at all night long if she so chose.
Just then, Cuan stumbled into the den looking frazzled.
"Are you alright?" Blaine asked, getting to her paws and approaching her brother.
Cuan shook out his fur. "Of course," he said, sounding utterly dishonest. "Just spent a little longer in the sun than I planned, that's all."
Blaine saw the slight crease in her brother's brow as he squinted, likely against the headache threatening his vision. "You should tell Lucan," she insisted, nosing his ear. "Make him focus your lessons at dawn and dusk. Or at least not at noon, when the sun is at its highest."
"He's doing this on purpose. He knows I'm like you to some extent, he's trying to bully it out of me."
"Is it so bad to be like me?"
Cuan lifted his head and his pained gaze softened. "No. Not to anyone except Lucan, and his opinion doesn't matter." He licked her muzzle and brushed past her to slump into the neat pile of bedding next to Blaine's own messy one. "I feel like I need his validation."
"Why do you need his validation when you already have everyone else's?"
"I don't know." Suddenly, Cuan's expression darkened into a gloomy frown. It wrenched Blaine's heart just to see it. "I want them all to want us. I want them to like having us around."
Blaine knew where this was coming from. It was not the first time she'd bore witness to Cuan's insecurity regarding their abandonment. He was a social butterfly and that was a clever disguise for his need to please, a need based in paranoia. She felt it herself, the anxiety of being left behind again — never as prominently as Cuan did, though.
"They're not like the others," Blaine said, catching her brother's teary eye. "They're nice. Even Lucan isn't all rough exterior, right? Like that first time I realised my headaches made it too hard to go out in the day, and I was too weak to walk myself back to the sanctum, so he all but carried me.
"Maybe he's not forcing you into the sun because he wants to embarrass you, Cuan." She let her muzzle tick up in a soft smile. "Maybe he's doing it because he wants you to admit you need adjustments before you get hurt. Maybe it's because he cares."
"He has a wonky way of showing it," Cuan replied in good nature.
"We're all a little wonky." Blaine pawed his face, resulting in a yap of objection from Cuan, before spinning around uncoordinatedly to observe the darkening shadows at the entrance to the den. "Speaking of which, it's time for me to finally go outside. I've all this energy pent up, you have no idea!"
She started for the exit but right before she could make it, her brother called for her. "Blaine," he said, drawing her attention back. She tilted her head, feeling her large ears flop about uselessly with the motion. Cuan's eyes sparkled with amusement. "Thank you."
"That's what sisters are for," said Blaine. "Inspiring speeches and dust showers."
"Dust showers?"
Blaine kicked up a cloud of dirt in Cuan's direction before bolting out of the den to the tune of his coughing and spluttering, laughing all the while and giddy at the prospect of a tranquil night ahead of her.
