Athanasios and his sister Dongmei were born on a chilly autumn night, nestling closely to their mother Aurae. Their father XuΔ was a well-built hunter, and the duo had inherited their father's strength and size alongside their mother's beauty and were held with high regard inside the pack due to their canine bloodline... even if the dog they were related to was not of Seraphina's lineage. Since their birth, they had been doted upon by parents and pack mates alike. When they were old enough to venture beyond the pack grounds, Dongmei's observant personality began to show through. She always seemed to survey her surroundings before charging into them, which Athanasios looked to her for guidance on.
Out of the pair, Dongmei was the reserved one. Her blue eyes always watched and took in what was going on, but she always preferred to be a spectator when it came to strangers or acquaintances. The wolfdog never intends to come off as snooty or uptight, but she simply prefers hanging out with her family and those close to her. Athanasios was the boisterous one, always raring to go see something new with someone new. She clung to him like a shadow, finding comfort in her brother's presence.
Still and to her dismay, Dongmei was favored by most of the pack for her white soft-tipped ears, which bore a resemblance to Esmae, a canine within the alpha's lineage. She didn't like all the attention, admittedly. She preferred to watch from the sidelines as opposed to be the one in the spotlight. Dongmei always tried to slip away when she could, to allow her nerves to calm down. She secretly wished the pack would give her brother some attention, too. She didn't want it.
Dongmei often went on little adventures with her brother Athanasios, and these trips had not gone unnoticed by the pack's scout, Leiana. She approached the wolfdog and offered to be her mentor, praising her observation skills and knowledge of the surrounding areas. Dongmei knew Athanasios wanted to be a scout, and she did too, but she didn't want to take the spot from him. Dongmei asked Leiana for a few days to think it over, and she agreed. The next few days, Athanasios wholeheartedly encouraged his sister, but Dongmei knew it hurt him to do so. They had always talked about coming scouts together, and she wasn't going to just leave him in the dust. Dongmei wasn't going to become a scout without Athanasios by her side, and so she returned to Leiana with her own proposal in mind.
"I'll agree to your offer under one condition!" Dongmei stated in the most authoritative tone she could muster. She nodded to Athanasios, and he gave Leiana a friendly grin. She turned back to the scout, offering a smile. "Athanasios is guaranteed to be the next scout once you step down."
Both Leiana and Athanasios were surprised, but her brother was clearly overjoyed. Embracing his sister in a hug, tail wagging uncontrollably, he looked towards Leiana for an answer. The oriode-colored wolf pondered for a few moments, before permitting herself a smile and nodding. "Okay." Leiana agreed, "it's a deal. I've got a brother of my own, so I understand."
From that day on, Dongmei was often busy. Every day she awoke, ate, and immediately accompanied Leiana on her scouting trips. She learned so much! How to find your way back if you were lost, what kinds of plants and herbs were useful or safe to consume, and even how to cover up her scent trail. As much as she enjoyed the trips, she couldn't help but feel somewhat alone without her brother by her side. Leiana, also a very observant spirit, seemed to notice this, and offered her some encouragement. "Between you and me, I'm not as young and spry as I once was. Don't worry, he'll be by your side sooner than you could imagine." The mentor stated with a chuckle.
And Leiana wasn't wrong. Dongmei had accompanied the scout to the herbalist's den one evening, where Leiana's brother, Jacana had been busy sorting herbs. Noticing his sister return with a wound, he quickly got to work. Dongmei sat quietly as the two conversed softly. Leiana turned her attention to the wolfdog with a small smile. "I think that this settles it. I'm going to go tell your brother he can have my spot. I'll work here with my own." She added with a chuckle, affectionately nuzzling Jacana.
While Leiana was making remedies, Athanasios was busy running free with Dongmei by his side. She was glad that her brother was here with her now, and it was easy to see that the twins had never felt so alive. Each day was a new adventure, and there was never a dull moment when Athanasios was by her side. Of course, there was always the occasional bickering, but they were never mad at each other for more than a day. Dongmei knew they were a team, and Athanasios obviously felt the same. The pack can always know of their return, with perfectly matched singing voices that slowly grow closer to the camp grounds.
Dongmei tends to watch from afar, using her keen eyes to scan the area and ensure it's safe, and is often given a reassuring push by her more adventurous and carefree brother. She can't imagine living life without Athanasios as her scouting partner, and each day is spent running alongside one another and ends with curling up next to one another. The two as are close as can be, and it's evident nothing will ever break their strong bond. Dongmei can be a touch vain, however, as she often likes to adorn her ears with little flowers. Her favorite is a strange blue flower she had discovered in a secret hollow while scouting one day.
Sometimes when she wasn't scouting, she enjoyed watching the hunters from afar. Her brother enjoyed challenging many of them to races and playful wrestling fights. One of the wolves he never beat in a race was Valdez. Dongmei had watched the two sprint off time after time, with the biotite-furred wolf always victorious.
Valdez was never boastful, instead offering advice on how to improve his speed. He became good companions with Athanasios, Dongmei ever-vigilant, admiring silently. She found Valdez to be handsome, and her brother enjoyed teasing her about her little crush, which always flustered her. Dongmei kept her feelings to herself for a long while. It wasn't until they had moved to the tundra that the silent admirer mustered up enough courage to talk with him.
She had approached the tall, lithe chaser who had been staring out over the snowy landscape, his white eyes shining excitedly. Dongmei had never seen him as anything besides calm and collected-- so this intrigued her. Shyly, she stood behind him in silence.
"Look at all the snow, Dongmei." Valdez turned to her, smiling. Dongmei was startled, she wasn't aware he had seen her. But his tail swished quickly, nearly a blur, as he continued. "I've always wanted to see it. My family hasn't seen snow for two generations. And... I'm the one that gets to see it in all it's glory."
"I-It's pretty." The wolfdog breathed out, admiring the snow and slowly drawing closer to his side. "I'm sure your ancestors are smiling too." Her fur gleamed like the snow itself, and her blue eyes turned to face him. Valdez seemed to glow from her statement, and adjusted Dongmei's blue flower.
"Well, that's reassuring. Thanks, Dongmei." Valdez nodded, seemingly trying to compose himself into his normally calm state once more. "We should talk more often. You're always so quiet, I thought you couldn't talk for the longest time until I saw you and Athanasios talking." Dongmei's tail began wagging quickly, but she remained silent, offering a smile. She was afraid if she spoke she'd say something stupid and Valdez wouldn't want to talk with her. He merely offered a chuckle before walking off, likely to go on a hunt.
The two began to talk more often and eventually, Valdez caught feelings for her as well and confessed. Dongmei eagerly accepted, and the two are very much in love. Although they are both very busy-- out scouting and hunting-- they enjoy curling up with one another for a quick nap or a heart-to-heart.
