"This has to be a mistake," insists Mako, shocked. "I mean-- being assigned to Gwreiddiau, that's a great honour, but in place of Hades...?"
Azerli glances at Hades with a somber look on her face. "Hades can't continue like this forever. He's getting old, he needs someone to take his place so that Gwreiddiau can continue providing for the sanctum," She glances slyly at the other trainees -- Yuri is smiling broadly at Mako, but Lucan and Mika look like somebody replaced their breakfast with a dung beetle. "We've chosen you, Mako. You're perfect for the role."
Mako's gaze flits between Azerli and Hades, uncertain. "Big paws to fill," he murmurs. "I wouldn't want this decision to forsake the pack. You're sure there's nobody else?"
Hades nods, and for once, he speaks his mind. "You've come far and I've been watching you every step of the way," he says, voice a deep rumble in his throat. "Your mother is a fine asset to Canghennau, I can only imagine the kind of talent you'll bring to Gwreiddiau in my place. You're a promising young lad."
"That's--" Mako reels back in surprise, once again taken off-guard. "That's high praise. I appreciate it. I appreciate this opportunity, too..." His head tilts. He looks as though he's thinking hard.
"Will you accept?" Azerli prompts hopefully.
Mako meets her eye again with a soft smile. "I'd be honoured. Thank you, both of you."
Hades's shoulders sag a little, tension relieved. "Good to hear that Gwreiddiau will be in good paws once I've left for the stars," he admits with a careful smile. Then, while he and Azerli rise to their paws -- he's so tall his head brushes the ceiling of the den -- he turns his head to the others. "You should be proud of what he's achieved, you know."
"We are," says Yuri with a hasty nod, "It's quite the feat!"
"Could've had a little warning," Mika adds, scrunching up her nose, and Lucan grumbles his agreement. "If I'd have known the spot was up for the taking, I wouldn't have been so humble."
Azerli smirks at her, "You mean you would've tried harder in training?" She chuckles at the aghast looks on the trainees' faces, "Yes, well, that's why Mako got picked and you didn't. Cheer up, Mika, there's other glory to be won."
Mako smiles to himself, catching Hades's eye before the two aging hunters leave. Hades winks at him, his sheer eyes opening up to a warmer side of himself that Mako has never seen before. He dips his head with respect for the elder; he really will do him proud and lead Gwreiddiau to great success when the time comes.
