"What do you mean, she's gone?!" snarls Malleus, towering over Neirith. She hardly cowers and her face is as cold as stone as she glares into his eyes.
"I mean," she growls, "Kauvin. Is. Gone. I don't know what happened to her. She went off wandering during a storm -- you know how she gets! She obviously got turned around!"
"How could you let this happen?!" Malleus squares his shoulders further, still trying to intimidate her. "Have you even talked to Aurin?! He's devastated!"
"You think I'm not devastated? She's my daughter too!"
Malleus mumbles something caustic under his breath before slamming Neirith's head to the ground with a paw, forcing her to cower, forcing her to bow. He hardly flinches when Aurin barks his name, lunging forward, but even Aurin isn't fast enough.
Reiker charges in and shoves Malleus off-balance, away from his mother. "Why attack Mother over this?" He bares his teeth, though he knows he is no threat to Malleus. He's only just over ten months old, he can't do much damage to a wolf twice his size and quintuple his age, but he's willing to make a stand for his mother's sake.
"Stand down, pup," Malleus warns, but he doesn't get to try his tactics on Reiker before he's shoved bodily backwards.
"No, you stand down," Aurin is there, between Malleus and his family, hackles risen and anger clear in every muscle. The onlookers murmur amongst themselves, having never seen Aurin so furious before. "Kauvin is gone, Father, but that is through no fault of Neirith's. To blame her is just cruel, to belittle her is worse."
Reiker helps his mother to her paws. She's trembling, shaken up from the encounter, but she's still got on a brave face. He admires her with everything he has.
"You want to talk about belittling, Aurin? Your son challenged my authority not one minute ago and you're defending him," Malleus's lip curls in disgust, and Reiker's stomach twists. He doesn't want this conflict, he wishes Kauvin had never gone missing. He wishes this were all over.
Nonetheless, he clears his throat and shakes the last of his nerves, stepping up to his father's side. "I'm sorry, you don't have authority over me anymore. I'm not a pup -- my coming-of-age is in a couple months. I can't let you push around my mother like you did, it's not right." And in that moment, he truly makes a sight.
He, like no other except for two special souls, has talked Malleus down from a conflict. Reiker watches Malleus leave in a huff, watchful eyes of ice matching his father's. And when the crowd disperses, Reiker looks cautiously over his shoulder at Neirith, who is forlornly staring into the forest beyond.
"You should comfort her, Father," Reiker suggests to Aurin, voice not above a murmur. "She misses Kauvin, and she feels far guiltier than she lets on."
