Labradorite

A lone wolf from the rainforests, I stumbled upon the Pack of Boulders on my travels. I was used to surviving on my own, so I had many strengths to share with them. Their leader and her mate were elderly and would soon retire, and they welcomed my skill with open paws. The leader took me under her wing in the last moons of her life and trained me in everything she knew, declaring that I would become the next alpha of the Pack of Boulders. I can tell that the other wolves aren't as keen on having me as the new leader as she was. The older pupsitters gossip whisper to each other and stop as I approach. The former alpha's older children glare at me. They're jealous she chose me instead of them. No matter. I'll prove to them that I am the only wolf in this pack suited to lead. These wolves are sheltered in their leafy hunting grounds. They've never had to battle through the thick underbrush and humidity of the rainforest, my true home. They've always been able to rely on each other. They don't know what it's like to be on their own, wondering if anyone would care if they vanished. I will show them. I will make this pack stronger and lead it to greatness. The Pack of Boulders will forever remember me as their best alpha.

There is one wolf who has shown me loyalty, though. A young hunter named Cassiterite. He's close to my age, but still so innocent. His joy and wonder are honestly endearing. The way Cass trusts me to care for him and his packmates is reassuring. And he always knows what to say to make me smile. I hope to have him lead by my side as my mate.

2 months later

The pack is coming along nicely. I have a nice orderly thing going, and I'm working on getting our territory extended down to the rainforest, so we can move back to my homeland. Most of the pack is settling into my lead. However, I'm getting the feeling the older pupsitters aren't a fan of me. Specifically Rust and Pumice-they're mad that I'm assigning roles to the pups so early. What a ridiculous reason-I'm just being organized and prepared. It doesn't matter if they can't stand that, they'll be in the dynasty soon anyways.

Some time later. . .

I got to spend some quality time with just Cass today. It was refreshing to play with him, as always. He's so unsure and underestimates himself constantly (it's kind of adorable). He doesn't seem to realize that he has amazing ideas and is incredibly smart. He just thinks of himself as the youngest shadow of his dad. But he's so much more than that. He's kind and funny and supportive. And he looks absolutely adorable with snow all over his midnight black pelt. And those glowing amber eyes. . .I love him. He's so amazing.

Later

Rust is dead. I know I shouldn't feel this surge of joy that an elder member of my pack has died, but. . .maybe with her gone these whispers of rebellion will quiet without growing into shouts. We shall bid her spirit farewell tonight and bury her. A part of me wants to jump with joy that she is gone, but I know I cannot do that. I must show the grief and respect toward the dead that is expected of me. Maybe I'll dig out the the Guarana as a celebration of her life. . .and death.

The Next Day
Cass seems a little upset at me. Well, upset might not be the right word. More of. . .concerned? Like, he's worried I don't understand how the pack is feeling right now. Condescending, maybe? Like, because I'm an outsider I don't understand what a pupsitter means to the pack! Whatever it is, I don't appreciate it. I love that Cass is so observant and caring about me, but sometimes. . .I just wish he would turn it down a little.

Still. I want to make this work between us. I love him and I love our relationship. Hmm. . .maybe we should adopt another puppy. He's loved raising Rutile. I'll surprise him by bringing home another pup from the enclave. Yes, that should fix things.

Two months later
Onyx is dead. I didn't know him well, and he was Rust's mate so I didn't trust him as far as I could throw him, but he was an asset to the pack. He was a good hunter and kept his siblings together. I'm training up Glaucanite's daughter, Pegmatite, to fill up that hunting pack, but I doubt she'll be able to fill the gap an experienced wolf like Onyx left. I can tell Cass misses him. And I can tell that Cass also feels isolated from the rest of his family. They were all comforting each other without making any move to include him. How dare they! He just wants to be loved. So instead, I comforted him. He needed someone, and I could be there for him. Because that's what mates do.

1.5 months later
Things are moving along at a nice pace. The pack is growing and pups are stepping up into the roles I have set out for them. Soon, I'll be ready to move my pack to the rainforest. My home. They have grown complacent and comfortable in their easy forest territory. Exploring the rainforest will help them learn and grow. Some may not want to obey. But they will. Because I am their leader and they must listen to me.

three months later
Aww, home sweet home. It is so freeing to run through the moonlit jungle. How I have missed it! I always swore I'd return home eventually. And now I'm leading a pack of my own. Oh, the pupsitters complained about the journey and the hunters are trying to figure out the new terrain. But they'll get used to it. Or I'll get rid of them. I wish I could get rid of Jasper, but she's the senior pupsitter and I'll need her if my pack is to grow. Dumortierite and Variscite, though, they're dead weight. It might be time to trim the pack a touch as the new pups come of age.
