The moon shone down upon Snowmoon's back as she lay on the ledge, tinting her fur a slight blue. She heaved a sigh, gazing down at her pack as they milled around the tundra below.

"What is to become of us?" she asked the moon, her eyes locking on a young male whose flame colored fur shone even in this darkness. "Will this darkness ever pass? I am getting old, and my old guard is fading quickly with me. I have lost friends over the past few moons, and soon I believe those of us who began this pack will be long gone. If Baelfire takes over when I pass, I do not know what will become of the many pups to be born in the future. Will he chase out all of Blacktail's heirs? Will he father an entire generation of cruel, dark wolves?"

As if in response, a cloud passed over the moon, leaving only a few rays gleaming down into the mouth of the canyon that opened out into the valley. In that moonlight was standing a wolf, broad-shouldered and thick-furred, looking down into the valley. His head rose and he locked eyes with the leader, and she felt a calmness wash over her. "Thank you," she murmured as the cloud passed on and light returned to the valley. "I shall see what this answer to Baelfire's cruelty brings."
