Your
footfalls are mostly quiet as you trot through the forest. Every so
often there comes the harsh snapping of a twig or the soft crinkling of
dead, dried foliage underfoot. You weave through the trees, turning your
nose up as you sniff. You’re not exactly sure what you’re looking for,
but you feel compelled to travel in this direction. As you continue, the
sound of trickling water grows nearer. Ah, it seems you’ve found a
stream. You pause. A quick survey of your surroundings leaves you unconcerned.
Lowering your head, you proceed to lap up the water. It is cold despite
summer temperatures, the taste clear and refreshing. Suddenly, you sense
the presence of another.
The sight of two dark paws in your periphery startles you. Glancing up,
you take a few steps back. Before you stands a large, dark colored wolf.
A low growl escapes from his throat as his lips curl slightly.
“Who are you? What are you doing here?” The strange wolf asks, his gaze
piercing into you.
You attempt to clear the lump in your throat. “My name is (Y/N). I don’t
want any trouble.”
“Where are you headed?” The wolf asks.
You tilt your head slightly, unsure of yourself. “Honestly, I don’t
really know.” You respond.
A deeper growl escapes the dark wolf, unsatisfied with your answer.
“This is not your territory. You have to leave, now-“
“Making friends again, Kieran?” A soft voice interrupts.
Your gaze shifts behind the dark wolf as another emerges from the
shrubbery on the opposite side of the stream. Twitching your nose, you
can tell the wolf is a young female. Her pelt is a dark gray,
highlighted by white across her limbs, underbelly, neck, and face. Black
ticking cascades down the ridge of her back and over her sides. She is
dazzling in the sunlight, her eyes captivating.
“Excuse me, but who are you?” The female asks, calmly.
“I’m (Y/N). I mean you no harm. I was just passing through.” You reply.
“They said they don’t even know why they are here,” Kieran adds. “Seems
suspicious to me.”
The female wolf approaches, eyeing you intently. “Hmm... you’re not all
that threatening, are ya?” She asks, giving you a wink. “My name is
Arcadia. This area belongs to my pack. We welcome travelers, as long as
they clearly have good intentions. Don’t mind Kieran, he’s just being
cautious.”
Arcadia looks you over one more time, eventually seeming satisfied.
“(Y/N), it’s nice to make your acquaintance. You’re welcome to rest here
for a while, if you’d like.” She says. Turning back toward whence she
came, she pauses. “Well... are you coming?”
