"You know, Jasper, there's something strangely poetic about this situation." Theo mused. He'd never really been the contemplative type, so Jasper found himself caught off guard by his old friend.
"What do you mean?" He asked, tilting his head to one side and stretching his paws in front of him.
"Well, I'm ending my adventure here in the same way I started it. Just me and a friend, it was Gale when I first arrived. But this time…" He paused, looked down at the ground. Jasper thought he caught a spark of regret in his gaze.
"But this situation isn't too bad, you know." Jasper quickly spoke up, "The sickness could have overtaken you before we had the chance to get our old pack members to safer places. We had the chance to find them packs who will love them after you have to go."
Theo paused, then nodded and sighed softly, "Yes, and I'm very glad they will be safe. I am thankful that I got the chance to tell them all how much they meant to me."
Standing back up and shaking his pelt, Jasper padded closer to Theo, plopping himself back down on the ground beside his friend and nuzzling him to offer some comfort. While he knew that he couldn't save his friend from his impending death or make him suddenly feel okay with it, he could offer his best comfort and stay by Theo's side until it happened.
And after several days, it did happen.
After it did, Jasper buried his friend's body, let out a mournful howl, and set off to start his own pack, just like Theo did.
He was going to live out Theo's legacy and make him proud.
