Written by Mason #96452

It's silent. The snow drifts and softly coats your fur as you trudge through the banks of icy slush, the chill settling deep into your bones. The only noise heard is the occasional tap. tap. tap. of the abandoned water vessels as they brush against what is left of the rotting piers. The humans used to live here, but their odd dens are now old and empty, left to decay and be reclaimed by nature. Nothing stirs as you pause to catch your breath, lungs aching with cold. The sheer brilliance of white shining as the sun beams down only hurts your eyes and warms nothing.
You pin your ears to your head, attempting to warm them slightly as you sniff the snow, hoping to catch a trail of anything. Your bones ache, you can no longer feel your paws, and your stomach bites with hunger; you're desperate to find something. Your heart leaps when you notice something, it's difficult to make out because of the freshness of the snow, but you can vaguely make sense of it.
A wolf, male, adult…
The sudden crunching of snow under paw pulls you from your tracking, jerking your head up, you catch sight of a white blur of fluff dashing behind one of the structures. Your ears perk and you stand still, waiting for another sound, but all that follows is silence. Was something actually there? You let out a small warning bark, telling whoever it is to show themselves. For a moment no one answers, but ever so slowly, the head of a wolf peers around the corner, they watch you for a moment before stepping out a little more. The mystery wolf wags their tail weakly and licks their lips, ears pinned against their head.
You shake your coat and shift into a more friendly posture before introducing yourself and asking about the area. This seems to encourage the other wolf to step closer. They introduce themself as Iori and he states that this is his home. After explaining your situation he wags his tail a bit more and smiles at you, his nervous demeanor lessening slightly as he begins to hop from one paw to the other. Iori explains that he has wares that they are willing to trade, as he looks over his shoulder his guard falls and the world seems to freeze.

You have a decision, what should you do?

[Trade]
You do nothing and wait patiently for him to continue. When he turns back around you tell him that you're willing to trade; he seems over the moon. His wagging tail now shakes his whole body as he pounces through the snow happily, he pauses only once to call for you to follow so they can show you their wares.

[Steal]
You lunge at the wolf while his back is turned, you want his items. You need them.

Agility Check
Iori attempts to leap away, do you catch him?
[Your wolf's Agility vs. Iori's Agility]

[Failed]
You attempt to grab ahold of Iori's scruff but he hops away too quickly. Damn! You both pause for a moment and look at each other, processing what just happened. You can almost see symbols similar to how the humans write in your vision as you calculate your next move; Iori seems to be in the same position as they try to make sense of what is happening. The silence is broken by a loud Tap from one of the boats and Iori is off at the speed of a hare.

[Pass]
Iori tries to dodge your attack, but you're too agile and catch him by the scruff of his neck. He attempts to pull away from you by thrashing as much as they can, but you clamp your jaw tight around the bundle of tough flesh and fur, refusing to let go. After a few minutes of this he slows to catch his breath; seeming to realize that they can't pull themself free, they kindly ask to be let go. You huff, annoyed at the request. A moment of silence passes before Iori makes a proposition; he offers something free-of-charge in exchange for his release. You take a second to think it over, during which the other wolf remains silent; ultimately, you agree to let him go. He plops ungracefully onto the ground and yelps in surprise. As he stands you growl at him, a warning to ensure that he won't jip you. He slowly moves to dig something out of his fur. What?! You had no idea he was storing things in his coat! Iori drops it at your paws and quickly draws back while crouching low to the ground; you disregard him for the moment and move to look at your prize, but as soon as you do Iori dashes for the woods, bounding gracefully through the snow and into the shadows of a tree line.

Speed Check
You missed! Hopping to your paws, you begin a pursuit!
[Your wolf's Speed vs. Iori's Speed]

[Fail]
You can't let them get away! With all your effort, you attempt to catch up to the white wolf. You chase him around the village, trying to keep him in your line of sight. Once or twice you can almost bite onto his tail, but you always seem to miss as he kicks up snow in your face. You push yourself to run even faster, but you simply can't catch up! While pursuing him down the main road, they make a sudden left turn into a small area between two old dens. Not expecting this, you end up skidding by and lose sight of Iori.
[Proceed to Event 3]

[Pass]
Oh no they don't! You chase after the agile wolf, and though he may be nimble, he sure isn't quick. As your paws slosh through the snow, you easily gain ground on Iori. They try to lose you by turning a corner, but before they make it, you pounce and pin him to the ground. He tries to roll over and toss you off of him, but to no avail. You growl at him to stop nipping at your paws and he grows still; instead, he starts speaking. They explain that they have something that they could give to you free of charge… in exchange for letting him go, that is. You ponder on the deal, don't let them trade with you and risk not getting anything, or let them up and get something for free… an easy choice. You slowly let Iori up, never taking your eyes off of him, he shrinks under your gaze. He motions for you to follow them, they take you to the side of the structure that they had hidden behind before and begin to dig. You watch curiously as they hit a lump of dirt beneath the snow and something comes into view. Iori gingerly picks the object up and plops it at your paws. As you look down to inspect the "gift" a sudden breeze ruffles your fur, when you look up, Iori is gone. Only shallow paw prints show that he was ever there.

Smarts Check
When you make it to the small passage you find no one! A white wolf in white snow, oh no! Where could they be hiding?
[Your wolf's Smarts vs. Iori's Smarts]

[Fail]
You grin to yourself and eye a rotted structure, a giant section seems to have collapsed in on itself, leaving an easy entrance for you to step through. You quickly jump into the building and swing your head around looking for Iori. You don't immediately see him, so you start to sniff around, hoping to pick up his scent. After finding nothing you huff and turn to look back outside of the wooden den, only to see a light brown nose poking out of a large snow pile, Iori pushes the rest of his head out from the snow and stares. You feel your wolfy soul ascend in embarrassment as you wonder why you hadn't thought that the mostly snow-white wolf would be hiding in a snow pile. Iori opens their jaw a little, and you think that he is going to say something, but instead, he sneezes, causing some of the snow on their head to fall off. Why is he just sitting there?!
[Proceed to Event 4]

[Pass]
You pause, mulling over the possibilities before deciding where to check first. Slowly, you pad past a partially collapsed section of one of the dens and pretend to sniff a mound of snow piled up nearby. After a few seconds, you tense up and ready yourself to pounce. Found you. With a swift but hardy kick from your hind paw, you snap the straining beam keeping the rotting structure up, causing everything to tumble down into a heap. A sharp yelp is heard as the white wolf scrambles to exit the wooden mass before being crushed. Knowing that you have them cornered, you decide to help the poor wolf and grab their scruff, pulling him out of immediate danger. After letting them go and catch his breath, you smirk at Iori, explaining that they now owe you a gift since you saved him. He seems to want to say something in return but snaps his jaw shut instead and pouts. Begrudgingly, he motions for you to follow him, and you both trudge through the slush-like snow. He guides you to an odd-shaped human-made thing, which he calls a "shiny pouch." Iori jumps and presses his two paws on the object gently and pushes it over, soon the 'pouch' gives way. The snow muffles the fall but a small clanking is heard from the inside as the top pops off. After the snow wolf shoves his head into the now uncovered end of the 'pouch' and pulls out an object, he steps closer to you before plopping the "gift" at your paws. You lean down to inspect it but suddenly you hear the crunching of snow under paw, looking back to Iori, you realize that he seems to have run off.

Wisdom Check
He's right there! Do you feel that something may be wrong with the situation?
[Your wolf's Wisdom vs. Iori's Wisdom]

[Fail]
Not at all! You bound out of the dilapidated den and through the snow. Just as you think you've got him you hear a crunch from under your paws and the ground gives way. With a surprised yelp, your hindlegs fall out from beneath you, leaving your front paws clawing to keep you from falling down a hidden pit. As Iori pushes their way out of the snowdrift, you whimper, asking for help. Iori looks torn; you'd been chasing him, but getting out of the hole will take some time with all this slush. Perhaps too long. With a sigh, he trots over and helps you out of the hole, however, you use his kindness to your advantage. As soon as you have proper ground you kick out his front legs, causing him to sprawl into the snow. With all the strength you have left from this chase, you pin him down and grab his scruff.
[Proceed to Event 5]

[Pass]
Yes, very. You look around the sitting wolf, trying to see if there is anything suspicious. There! You notice some soggy brown leaves and small sticks poking out from under the white snow, keeping eye contact with Iori you walk to the trap and sit down. You pick up a piece of rubble from next to you and ungracefully drop it onto the sticks and leaves, they snap and give way, revealing a small dug pit. Iori looks at the hole and back at you before smiling nervously. You step around the pit and stand face to face with the white wolf, demanding that he give you something for free or that you'll shove him into his trap and leave him to climb out by themself. Knowing that he won't be able to climb out of the snow fast enough before getting caught by you, Iori huffs before agreeing and pushes his way out of the icy hiding place. Instead of leading you anywhere, he simply turns around and seems to dig a hole further into the snowdrift. You growl with impatience but decide to generously give them a second to do whatever it is they are doing. You are about to nip his tail when he mumbles something and starts to back out of the pile, and in his mouth, what you can only assume is your payment. Iori turns to you and tosses the item at your feet before running into the village.
Strength Check
You got them! But can you keep your grip on the elusive Iori?
[Your wolf's Strength vs. Iori's Strength]

[Fail]
You think you have a good grasp on him until you don't. With startling strength, he rips his scruff from your jaw and kicks you away from him, causing you to stumble into a snow pile. As you scramble to get up you accidentally bump into the side of a structure too hard and the snow on it breaks loose, plopping right onto your head. You swear you hear muffled laughter, but by the time you finally pull yourself out of the icy mess Iori is nowhere to be seen.
[Proceed to Final Fail!]

[Pass]
The poor white wolf can't seem to get a good grip on the icy ground, causing him to struggle when pulling away. Even as he flops and thrashes around, you don't let him out of your grasp; after all the effort it took to catch him, he better have something to make this all worth it! You shake him about like a toy to show just how much stronger than him you are before dropping him. As he goes to stand, you snap your teeth at him, explaining that he better have something good for you, for free no less, or things may not go well for them. With a disheartened look he nods and begins to lead you inside the rotting building you originally thought he was in. He shows you a spot where some of the wooden planks pop up, telling you that everything in there is yours. With a proud, toothy grin, you trot over to the secret hiding spot and wait for Iori to give you your well-earned prize! Gingerly, Iori pulls something out and places it at your paws, but when you look down at it, you notice that it's only one item. You go to ask what kind of joke this is, but when you turn your head, you only see a white tail vanishing out of view.
[Proceed to Final Pass!]

[Final Fail]
Aw, they got away. After pawing at the snow dejectedly, you sulk around the village for anything that may make this trip worth it. Oh great, now your snoot is cold too!
You lost!

[End]

[Final Pass]
Shaking your head, you pick up the thing they dropped before scrounging around for anything else that may be useful. You still can't feel your paws.
