“I never would have made it here without you.”

Dawnstar looked at her travel companion with fierce gratitude.

“I think you give yourself too little credit,” the gray wolf said, a small smile exposing the tips of his canines.

“I’m serious. We should have died by now, whether from the war at home or the danger in the mountains. It’s because of you that we’re still here. Thank you, Nightshade.”

Her companion looked uncomfortable with the praise. “What do you want to do now?” he asked.

They were standing on a hill, the long grasses soft underpaw and swaying around them in the breeze. The wind tousled Dawnstar’s golden-colored fur and seemed to whisper welcoming words in her ears. The grassland stretched far before them, until they could make out a dotted skyline of trees on the horizon. Birds flew overhead, and she could hear the scratching of prey in the brush. The sun was coming up over a darkened forest far to the east.

“We’ve made it. This is the new home of Winterhaven.”
