Cosmavicans
Intro story:
Biomes conquered: Mountains, Grasslands, Tundra, Taiga
As pack leader, it's your job to look out for your pack. You're doing one of your border patrols when you notice a faint scent on the wind. You raise your muzzle and breathe deep... it's the scent of an unfamiliar wolf. You're on your borders so they're not in your territory, but the idea of wolves this close to your hunting ground is... troubling. After marking the borders you track the wolf's scent to the top of a rise and stop. Below is a camp of wolves lounging outside their dens, sharing prey, sleeping and chatting comfortably with one another... but you've never seen them before. You don't recognize any of them. But that's when you realize a wolf is walking as if they'd just gotten to the clearing. You lean as far as you dare and inhale, filling your nose with the scent and separating it from what seems to be their packmates. That was the wolf you were tracking! How did they get down there so fast?
"It's a long way down... do you want to jump?" Startled by the new voice, you turn and see yet another unfamiliar wolf behind you. He's adorned with red ribbons around his neck and legs, looking rather fancy. He stays a little ways away from you and crouches to show he means no harm, his pale brown fur slightly fluffed to battle the chill of the Tundra. He speaks before you can. "Greetings, stranger. I am Karnin, a scout from the Cosmavican pack. What brings you here? If you seek friendship with Yucco, he sure knows how to impress a wolf." Karnin grins in a way that makes it seem like he joined the pack and wasn't born there. You certainly don't want to join Yucco's pack as you have your own wolves to attend... but maybe it would do good to know your neighbors.
Karnin looks down to the ground from the ridge and you wonder how you're supposed to get there. Maybe Karnin could see that, because he said, "If you are worried about injury, then don't be. We all jump off this ridge to get to our current camp. The trick is to fold your paws under you and land in a roll. The grass is brittle, but layered thickly down there; even the pups have jumped down safely."
You don't want to seem weak in front of this wolf; you need to make a good impression on your neighbors. A fearless ally or a strong enemy; whatever your relationship will call for.
So you jump. It's actually quite fun - it's like flying! As you get nearer to the ground, you try to tuck your front paws and roll like Karnin said in one smooth movement, and you actually do! Piece of cake. After a few moments, Karnin rolls in beside you. Heads turn your way as you shake the sand out of your fur; some friendly, some curious, some hostile.
Confidently Karnin takes you straight through, exchanging friendly greetings with pack members. "Oh - Jeshirro!" he calls, and a brown wolf comes trotting towards him with a friendly wag of his tail.
"Hey there, newcomer. What's up, Karnin?"
"I found a new feather for you. I know you lost your other one," Karnin explains with a little laugh, and passes him a glossy white feather. "Be careful with it!" And Jeshirro nods, trotting away with his tail swishing happily. To you, Karnin adds, "He often loses things. But I don't mind finding him whatever he needs during my scouts." The way these wolves are so casual around you either means they're not worried about you as a potential enemy, or are just generally kind, friendly wolves. You're not quite sure which one yet...
Karnin leads you to a gray-white male wolf who sits speaking to a much older dark male with purple and blue stripes. The younger wolf turns to you with interest.
He addresses his scout first. "Karnin, don't worry about your report right now, we can confer about any details later - that is, if there's nothing too urgent to discuss."
"Alright," the brown wolf agrees, seeming bashful. "Thank you for being so understanding. We're lucky to have a leader like you, Yucco. Regarding the essentials, though, I met this kind wolf on my way back, and they wanted to meet you." He sent a sincere grin to you, as if thinking you were more important than his report anyway. Very humble.
"I was certainly wondering where they came from," remarked the older male dryly. He looked you up and down with interest and calculating eyes. "Are you here to deliver that rabbit I asked for? ...Not a talker, huh? What, wolf got your tongue?" The sarcastic wolf watched you with a mischievous glint in his eyes as he teased you, his enjoyment written plainly on his snout.
Yucco seemed to give him a half-amused, half-tired look before regarding you curiously. "Welcome!" he greeted warmly. "Don't mind Kusvin," he added, nodding towards the sarcastic wolf. "He's my beta. I plan for his kin to lead when I'm gone - he's... not exactly friendly, but he's a reliable former-herbalist, and very wizened. I can assure you his teasing is all in good nature."
Kusvin's only response was an eye roll. "Anyway, accept my official welcome to the Cosmavican Pack from yours truly, Yucco. I've gotten reports from my scouts of unfamiliar wolves settled close by... I'm guessing that's you! If you don't like us this close, don't worry - we won't stay long. We're a travelling pack, and this is just another stop of many. But hopefully we'll have a very harmonious relationship ahead of us, if anything."
It was curious how outwardly friendly this Yucco was to a stranger, but he was very amiable and hopeful. Maybe a little naive... depending on what the future brought, maybe you could take advantage of that. But for now, they seemed nice enough...
