Melvin's Market - A new SC sink and shop

Melvin's Market - A new SC sink and shop
Posted 2023-01-08 20:27:52 (edited)

Alternate Names: Melvin Mart
Today we are here to talk about everyone's favorite new quest giver - Melvin! Since his release I've seen some concerns about their being even MORE SCs introduced to an already flooded market. Aside from that, let's face it, Melvin is a bit boring and not too much different than a reskinned easy mode Quest Snake. He doesn't really bring much more to the table aside from his adorable self. This suggestion is here to fix that!

Melvin should become a travelling shopkeeper - checking in on his wolf friends and allowing them to trade with him if his missions are all completed for that day. His shop would function quite similar to the Lioden Flood Pits where it would contain many exclusive items - but also some more common "junk" items - that are shuffled daily. He would offer each player five random items from his pool after completing their daily missions with a small message like:
"Hello, kind fellow! Th-thank you for not eating me... Here's what I scavenged up today while you were attending to your pack duties! I hope something manages to catch your eye..."

As for what he would sell. My first thought was instantly these fellows!

That's right - I want the mice that plague your submales in Lioden to come alongside my wolves for a small silver cone fee! I could see their being multiple variations that will sit on your wolves' paws, head, and even little families that you can give a ride of your back too!

Aside from the mouse decor I could see many decor options. Mice are known for being scavengers and for stealing things so I'm sure there's PLENTY of options devs could come up with. My thoughts so far are:
Mice nesting supplies

  • Feather-themed decor (maybe even crafting recipes?)

  • Feather bundles

  • More rare and exotic herb bundles (event herbs and rare biome herbs, maybe?)

  • A twig 'wood mouse nest'

  • 'tumbleweed' nesting balls with mice peeking out

Mice love shiny things so of course we need shiny decor
  • a pile of assorted shiny items

  • SC/GC hoard

  • Assorted jewelry decor

Food
Melvin could also sell a new 'vegetation bundles'. I could see these bundles containing new food items - such as fruits, berries, and nuts. These items would restore 5-10% hunger but take significantly longer than other food items to rot.

You may be thinking 'but wolves are carnivores!' But this just isn't true. It's been proven time and time again that wolves are not only capable of digesting plant matter, but that it also takes up a portion of their normal diet. Here is just https://americanwolves.com/blogs/wolf-stories/what-do-wolves-eat#!
"wolves have the digestive capabilities needed to synthesize plant-based food. These fierce creatures are known to eat berries, apples, carrots, and melons.Β About 20% to 30% of their overall diet consists of the vegetarian kind.Β "

Down the line I would love to see rare rodent-themed applicators added. Though I know that wouldn't be anytime soon.

Other Suggestion to consider
  • Timewaster#54523: I support except I think it should have it's own currency like GEin lioden (which would counter the flooded market arguement) and maybe in the far future a mouse themed applicator or two.

  • Ooh support cycling like what melvin 'found' oh what if you could spend an ammount of the hypothetical currency to send melvin to look for specific things like 'herbs' 'toys' 'trophy items'

This sounds great, and would definitely make Melvin a lot more interesting!

Sounds nice. Maybe the decor could even be themed around small animals in general. Still waiting for more options for snake decor. We only have one lunar and 4-5 custom snake decors at the moment.

Small animals certainly would open up the possibilities and keep the shop running and items valued vs them all just being mice! I could see a lot more rodent-themed options being possible.Β  I know LD had guinea pigs and rabbit decor I think could be nice! As for wild rodents, North America has so many different species of chipmunks, squirrels, rats, voles, moles, shrews, gophers, and more that are native, so possibilities span pretty far!

Though I don't know how happy Melvin would be to sell snakes (though I would die for more snake decor myself, having five of my own). Maybe they followed him to the player and he's desperate to get rid of the hungry boy. Some days he could sell small herbivores like the mice and other days he could sell predators that have been 'giving him the side eye all day' like reptiles, minks, and raptors (since so far, our decor is limited to small songbirds and such.)

Support! Melvin definitely needs to be more than just another quest giver. I mean, even the snake has multiple uses

I love this idea! It would be cool to have a randomised market for a NPC. I still think that the sc/gc hoard wouldn't be too good of an idea, but I like the vegetable bundle. Image if you could craft carrot crowns, that would be so goofy.

I like this idea

Melvin is a bit boring to me and with how he sometimes gives missions you can't finish or don't wanna do i am really not interested in doing his missions and keeping my streak.
He's cute but No... He needs more for him

Quinton Quest snake (Yes i call him that hush XD) is more fun for me to do honestly than Melvin and i at least have more option on if i want to do a quest or not (Snake skulls are worth shit to me tbh and work poorly in my opinion).

Support! Mainly For The Chance To Have Little Mice Decors. I Would Just Love Having A Bunch Of Mice Hanging Off Your Wolf/ Pup. Haha

Please this! I absolutely adore the idea of having a variety of mice and other critters as little companions and it would provide another source of decors for us users who just love prettying up wolves! Honestly, I'm dying to see more nature-themed decors, and as much as I love the existing ones, I always come to the realization that we've got too few of them, especially when compared to Lunar event decors. It would also provide a nice alternative for users struggling to find all the craftable recipes.

Flower crowns and adornments and other moss/berry/herb-like decors would also be a bonus. It would go so well with the cozy forest theme I'm aiming for and is my favorite aesthetic here on Wolvden.
