Gladiator Glade [ wolf sink for adults/adols + appraisal NPC ]
Posted 2022-11-26 18:14:57 (edited)
This new feature has 2 purposes:

⭐ Create a much-needed wolf sink for the abundance of unwanted adols/adults

⭐ Allow players to appraise their wolves' actual rarity based on their unique traits

Flavor: Your local ferocious Wolverines want to see some BLOOD! They're looking for the toughest, flashiest wolves to join their gladiatorial games as permanent participants.

They will reward you for introducing them to STRONG FIGHTERS who will LOOK FABULOUS✨ in battle!

The gladiator recruiter appraises your wolves and assigns points based on:

  • Total Stats Above Minimum

  • Individual Stats Above Minimum

  • Base Tier

  • Total Markings

  • Marking Tier

  • Eyes

  • Mutation

  • Generation

  • Proficiency

  • Level

Over a certain threshold of points, they offer to reward you SC / random common trophy if your wolf joins their entertainment troupe.

Below the threshold, they offer some... Meat Scraps?

Either way, if you agree to let your wolf join their gladiator ring, the wolf leaves your pack permanently and you claim the recruitment reward.

The game already tracks the percentage of wolves with each base. This extends that functionality to be applied to other traits.

We can already check how many wolves share a trait or have >X stats via Wolves Search so theoretically the Wolverine Recruiter could make the same query. If too many queries is a concern, make it cost SC to get appraised just like scrying.

Offering a realistic baseline value, anchored on the wolf's actual rarity, will let players figure out their worth quicker and unclog the TC.

Yes! So much support!
This would be so helpful when it comes to finding a good lore reason for losing a few pack members to make room for younger and possibly better wolves! I've had a few more blood-thirsty leads that would have happily thrown half their pack at the Wolverine Recruiter.

Sounds complicated but I could see it working.

πŸ’ŽπŸ” Appraisal Algorithm

I want to provide a more solid example of how this would systematically determine rarity by using actual game data via Wolves Search.

Example 1)

Suppose I want to find out, What are the most high stat pups being born?

Search for Rolled over today | Younger than 1 year | Min stat total 800
We can see there is only 1 page of results.
To confirm this is quite rare, query 750 min stats shows 6 pages of results. 700, a whopping 17 pages!
Therefore, 800 total stats on an adolescent is quite rare.

Example 2)

Let's check the rarity of the new eye color, Mercury.

Again, we only care about active packs, so select Rolled Over Today.
There are 6 pages of results, or about ~120 wolves.
How about only Mercury eyed NBWs? Change Generation = Exaxctly 1. We get 5 pages of results. Hmm, that means a pup with Mercury eyes might be pretty rare!
Select Younger than 1 year. Only one page. So, we can conclude Mercury eyed pups are genuinely rare.

Example 3)

How common is a level 20 wolf?

106 pages. Wow, great job everyone!
Oops, but we included Immortals. Let's exclude most of them by choosing Max age = 5 years. We get 25 pages of results. So it'd be quite the accomplishment to reach level 20 before age 5!
Can we narrow it down even more? Let's check T3 and T* wolves under age 4. Just 5 pages!

*1 page of search results = 20 wolves

My main concern is this might be a lot of database queries for the server. A solution would be to charge a fee and put appraisal behind a timer (like most other game mechanics) while the NPC tests your wolf.

I'm not really sure.

1. If you could "sell"Β  a wolf then why should you chase them for free? There would be no more chased wolves wandering around the biomes.
Maybe it would only work for T1-T2 wolves? Or it could be that any T3 or Special* would still end up in the wild?

2. High gen wolves loose even more value.

3. Gladiator games were a really cruel thing, and thinking of my wolves tearing each other apart... not my cup of tea.
Maybe some kind of traveling show, beauty contest or "actor recruiting"? Anything that does not kill them.

Another way to "save" the existance of chased wolves would be making if something like the enclave:
every week you can only offer 1 wolf and he has to have al least one of 5 characteristics. At which point, you get points for rarity ecc... so the better he is, the better the reward (this would allow you to sell "good" wolves for a higher price, which the enclave system does not )

I do support very much the fact that we need to find a way to give "chased" ados something to do.
As it is, they don't go to the Enclave, they don't reappear in the wild, they just die.

Thanks for engaging with the discussion!

1) How many wolves are chased now that never get found because the chase pool is flooded? People will still always want to raise & chase to create new T3 lines and NBWs with rare markings like penta merle. I don't think this would threaten the chased pool. If anything, it would improve it.

2) Both high and low gen could be rewarded by the appraiser. Even IB could be rewarded here, because some folk IB intentionally to get huge strength stats, and STR would be most valuable. (I also have a diff suggestion thread to help with the long line low value problem.)

3) WD is already pretty hardcore, with bloody prey art and battles. But I was envisioning the lore more as a playful spectacle than anything truly vicious. The implication wouldn't necessarily be that your wolves die! They become glorious champions, and retire in style when their battle days are done. The colliseum could display a random champion, much like our homepage, so there's still a chance for everyone to appreciate them.

Enclave) I am absolutely opposed to anything that limits the number of wolves that you can give up each day. This is how we got into this situation. We already have Enclave, yet look how many 10 cent fodder still flood the TC, because the Enclave is not easy enough to use- it's often not worth it spending time to complete the quests. Wolf market economy is broken because there are too many rotting in trades.

What I am looking for is a way to help all these unwanted wolves increase in value, by reducing the overabundant supply.

I can understand that and agree to most of it.

1. I only met 3 or 4 chased wolves since I started playing (ok, it was only mid april, but still...) and I thought it was because there are too few.
If not, developers, why don't they pop up a little more often??
I'd actually love for chased ados to be befriendable too.

2. That would be good :)

3. Okay

4. Limiting the number was another way to save the chased pool, and I do think that the ringmaster needing a specific marking would make the tc more useful.
If the chased pool is not a problem, then it could just be an extra high reward.

I almost always take the Enclave quests (probably players who have been on wd longer and have lots of currency don't need the little extras, but for beginners it's really valuable).
I think flooding the tc is still better than just chasing the pups into oblivion. At least someone is happy to find your pups there and both buyer and seller getΒ  sc out of the breedings.

I like the idea, but if what I'm getting from the simpler ones is some meat scraps or 3-4 sc like the horrid bear fggives you for your puppies, then I guess selling them for 20 sc is way better.
To work, the reward should be good, which is way capping could be considered.

Still, overall it's a good idea.

Hm, I have been thinking about Malec's concern that gladiators are too violent flavor-wise.

What if there were two options? Gladiator Glade, and Adventurer's Guild? (Not good/evil, but ruthless/gallant)

Adventurer's could be hosted by a polyam pride of sapphic pumas, who need wolves to carry out daring adventures!

The two places could have different decor rewards for turning in large numbers of wolves (and incentivize players cleaning out the TC!!) and be rivals to each other

What if you could also adopt a retired gladiator/adventurer? Maybe display one retiree once per player per day.
