As much as you’d prefer it to just be you and Chenoa, you doubt Doha would take too kindly to you running off to go stargazing with his mate. With feigned indifference you examine the goofy look on your brother’s face for a moment.

“Now I suppose, if memory serves it’s a bit of a walk to the cliff.” You stifle a yawn, with your hunger satiated, fatigue is slowly settling in.

“Well let’s get a move on before Teco dozes off.” Doha chuckles and turns to leave, Chenoa falling into step beside him with you a half step behind both of them.

It’s not as far as you remember to the secluded clearing at the top of the cliff that overlooks a portion of the Wakhan territory. The three of you find a comfortable spot to lie down and huddle close. Despite the storm that seemed to be brewing earlier today the night sky is clear enough that the brightest of the stars are clearly visible through thin, lazy clouds that are drifting by. Chenoa is uncharacteristically chatty as she tells amusing anecdotes and fond shared memories, occasionally you or Doha will interrupt to add little asides. It seems like you’ve only been up there for a few minutes but the dim glare of the moon reveals that it’s closer to dawn than dusk.

“Well I’ve got a feeling that it won’t stay this nice out for long, we should probably head back and hunker down for the night.” Doha rolls over and onto his paws before giving a big stretch and an exaggerated yawn.

---------------------------------

A) Head back with Doha and Chenoa

B) Keep moving forward, you can't afford to waste any more time

C) Suggest to stay up here just a little bit longer

You nod slowly and rise, with one last glance at the creeping storm clouds crawling across the night sky you turn to follow Doha only to bonk noses with a concerned looking Chenoa.

"Sorry Teco!" She apologizes, rubbing her nose with her paw, "I was gonna ask if you'd want me to escort you off the territory tomorrow? I'd hate for you to run into one of our hunting parties on your way out"

"Sure, as long as I won't be keeping you from more important pack matters." You tilt your head.

"Not at all!" Chenoa titters.

The walk back to the clearing is quiet, and you find your mind drifting to the events of the past few months, running into Dohasan has dredged up the deeply buried memories of that terrible night. You squeeze your eyes shut in a futile attempt to quell the barrage of images flashing before you like a bad dream. Once you finally reach the den site you are ready to call it a night, mentally and physically drained.

"You're welcome to stay with the pack tonight, and whenever you're ready to leave tomorrow just say the word." With that Chenoa heads into the main pack den, leaving you and Doha standing just outside the mouth of the den. The older wolf is looking at you with an expression you can't quite place.

"Hey, what's up with you? Why are you traveling alone? Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to see you and all but you really shouldn't be away from the pack wandering around this close to winter." Doha has started to ramble nervously, an annoying habit he's had since he was a pup.

-----------------------------

A) Level with Doha and tell him what happened.

B) Fib and tell him everything's okay.

C) Change the subject and hope he takes the hint

It's been a while :)

You shuffle your paws a little as you try to come up with a plausible lie for your behavior. Your throat closes up and your legs start to quiver under Doha's intense gaze. You and your brother were never particularly close but even through all the turmoil of the last few years there was a baseline of mutual respect among kin. Unable to really deny Doha the truth you take a deep breath and come clean.

"Mom and Dad are gone."

"Gone? Gone where?" Your brother tilts his head in confusion.

"To the pack beyond." Your voice is barely a whisper and you can't bear to look Doha in the eyes.

"Wha-how?" Doha starts to pace, you're sure his mind is reeling with this revelation.

"Crossing the Great Lake, it was too early. The ice wasn't thick enough to cross yet."

"Crossing the Great Lake?", Doha parrots, his voice thick with incredulity,  "This early in the winter?! Of course the ice wouldn't hold, even a pup knows that! Why would you even attempt it?"

"We had no choice!" You find yourself getting defensive, your hackles rising and lip curling up.

"What do you mean--why--" Doha sputters as rage flickers in his eyes, unable to verbalize his question against the rip tide of anger washing over him.

"Listen to me! Something is--or was following us, hunting us. It came down from the mountain last summer and wiped out half the pack. When it reemerged a few months ago the elder's didn't want to take any more chances. We had to leave."

"Tecoma, you're speaking nonsense. No wolf in their right mind would cross the Great Lake before the bears start to hibernate."

"If we would have waited we would have been facing a worse fate than death." You swallow thickly as Doha looks at you, his expression a mix of sorrow and anguish.

--------------------------------

A) Elaborate

B) That's enough for now
