You stand up straight and puff out your chest a little, making sure to school your face into a look of indifference. Chenoa hides a smile as she motions for you to follow her. All thoughts of finishing your meal are wiped from your mind as you trot after her. 

“Quite the shock to see you again. The way you left things was...explosive to say the least.” She looks at you out of the corner of her eye, gauging your reaction. 

Two summers ago your father had taken you and Dohasan to pay your respects to the dying leader of the Wakhan pack. Mitena had led the pack for 12 summers and under her watchful eye it had flourished. Unfortunately he had failed to produce or name an heir before she passed on. Leaving the pack in a scramble to regain order and decorum. Chenoa had caught your eye and as the niece of Mitena she had enough prestige to make for a good match. Before you could reveal your intentions though Doha had stepped up to take claim to not only your chosen mate but the leadership role of the whole Wakhan pack. All of your diplomatic training went out the window and you unleashed the tongue lashing of a lifetime upon Doha. You burned that bridge to soot and never looked back, until now. 

“I’ll admit I said some pretty awful things, that I didn’t mean, in anger.” You have the decency to look ashamed. 

“Well, why don’t we wipe the slate clean and start over?” Chenoa stops and turns to face you fully, eyes hopeful. 

“I think that would be best.” 

“Excellent,” She flashes a wide smile. “I’m not sure how tired you are but a few of us are going night fishing if you want to join? Half-frozen food from the cache is fine but nothing beats fresh fish in the fall.”

“Thanks for the invite but I’m stuffed,” You pause a beat to gather the courage to spit out your suggestion, “Why don’t we do something a bit more relaxing? Like stargazing, if you still enjoy it as much as you used to.” 

You hold your breath as you watch Chenoa mull over your suggestion, she looks a bit reluctant to accept. Most likely thinking of the image it would project to her packmates. That was one thing you never liked about Chenoa, she was always worried about sullying her ‘reputation’. Second and third guessing her decisions in hopes of always maintaining her unblemished honor. 

“I do...but-” 

“No, no buts. I’m deciding for you, you’re coming.” You interrupt what was sure to be a pitiful excuse for why she shouldn’t go with you. 

“Coming where?” At the sound of Dohasan’s obnoxious voice you roll your eyes. 

“Stargazing.” Chenoa answers easily. 

“Great! When do we leave?” Your brother looks between the two of you expectantly.
