❖ Byxem Arros

Byxem looked up as Ilia took their hand, smiling weakly. They let out a heavy sigh, nodding their head after a moment's pause. "Right, the student... the ashes," they said absentmindedly. "The water cavern sounds nice, yes."

"Thank you, Ilia. I honestly don't know what I would do without you to keep me anchored, ha," they chuckled half-heartedly, their smile not reaching their eyes. They remained seated as Ilia stood and left with Kyrena, watching them go with a tired expression. "Good luck," they called, before covering their face.

Their chest felt so heavy, and tears threatened to spill over their cheeks. It was only the first day, why was everything going wrong so quickly? They pondered for a moment. Because it's only the first day, they thought glumly. Things will get better. They always get better.

For some reason, the words seemed hollow.

They looked up as Nikita sat next to them, and they nearly let all of their emotions out as she offered them a hug. They nodded, remaining silent, and leaned against her, letting out a shuddering breath as they listened to her comfort them. Neha placed her head on their shoulder, licking their cheek.

"I hope," they said quietly, raising their hand to stroke Neha's snout. "We can only hope."

ϟ Neha

As Kyrena rumbled to Neha, she bumped her head against Kyrena's forehead in understanding. She snorted as Kyrena let out a small flicker of flame, and she flicked her wing with her tail, a somewhat teasing gesture, despite the dark mood of the room.

She hated the bad mood.

Swinging her head around to Byx, she watched as Nikita approached them, sitting beside them and talking in gentle tones. Neha had always enjoyed Nikita; she was kind to both Byx and herself, and she was always one of the first to comfort both of them. She was solid but soft. Neha liked that.

Neha lumbered up behind Byx, placing her heavy head on their shoulder, curling her tongue to lick at Byx's cheek.

♤ Evangeline ♤

Evangeline quickly wiped the tears off of her cheeks, shying away from the gentle light of Kyrena's wisp of fire. She curled in on herself, trying to protect herself from something that would never come. After a few moments, she looked up at the woman. She felt like a little kid again, curled up in a cabinet with her brother as her parents fought with her aunt. They'd be in there for hours, tossing a ball of wool back and forth between each other. They'd keep the door open ever-so-slightly so they wouldn't get locked in it, who knew how long it would take for their parents to remember they existed.

She laughed coldly, "Of course I know that. I grew up there." She said, her voice wavering but the anger still under-toning her voice. She pushed herself further against the corner as Ilia crouched down, panic rising in her gut. She tried to regulate her breathing, digging her nails into her legs to bring herself back into the moment. It's okay.. you're not there anymore. She told herself, taking a deep breath which helped but she still didn't relax her muscles. She really didn't want to let Ilia ask her questions, she wanted to scream at the headmaster. She wanted to let her know just how she felt about her right now. But she just nodded slightly, "fine, I'll let you answer my questions." Evangeline answered, her anger curbed for now.

□● Calliope Cresthill ○■

Callie laughed as Ida squeezed past, urging the stallion beneath her to move forward faster, the two soon catching up to their companions. She slid off as well when they arrived, leading Dragonfly behind her to wait for the hidden door to open. She rubbed the horse's head, kissing his forehead with a small smile.

Moving through the valley with Dragonfly following obediently after Aesira, Calliope was going to call over in greeting to Ilia before noticing she was talking to a student and deciding not to. She instead just followed after Ida like a lost puppy. "Right, sounds good. I'm starving." She said, her stomach sounding off in agreement right afterwards. She chuckled sheepishly, rubbing the back of her neck.

꧁ Ilia Farra || Kyrena ꧂

Ilia watched the girl curl away, moving to sit on the ground instead of crouch rather uncomfortably. "Of course you did... but it's not just a matter of family anymore." She replied once Evangeline replied, voice shaky but the anger just below the surface so very ready to explode.

A small nod, although Ilia suspected she'd much rather scream and rage at the headmaster again, and Ilia smiled slightly. "Thank you. You can ask whatever you wish, and I will answer it to the best of my abilities. If I can't answer it, then I will explain why not and you can choose how we proceed from there. Does that work for you?"

༺ Ida ༻

Calliope followed along, quiet words followed by another rumble of her stomach and Ida laughed quietly, picking the lantern off of the perch to bring it into the dark stables. The door was left just a little open, small footprints lining the slightly dusty ground. Hmm. Someone must've just left. But... Ilia and Kyrena were outside. A wyvern wouldn't miss much.

Setting the lantern on a hook, hook attached to a pole between two stalls, Ida led Aesria into one stall. The previously fussy mare next to her had settled, watching the four with wide eyes.

Soon enough, both horses were untacked and had food for the night. The troughs were full of water and so Ida took Calliope's hand, walking towards the entrance of the cavern. The first level was close to the top, just a few steps down before the platform and then the entrance of both kitchen and infirmary loomed before them.

The dining hall at the end was full of light still, and the great storm wyvern hovered around Nikita and... Byx? Yes, it did look like Byx. The air seemed... heavier, oddly enough, and Ida stilled, a frown creasing her brow.

「」Nikita「」

As Byx practically folded into her arms, Nikita kept up a steady stream of reassurance. "There, both Halvor and Neha to comfort you." She smiled, stepping away after a few long seconds.

As Neha looked towards the entrance, Nikita followed her gaze. Both Ida and Calliope stood there, slowing their pace as they looked over the hall. Oh goodness, it was a lucky thing there was extra food!

"Well, hello girls! Wasn't expecting you to arrive so late. Come along, come inside. I have food for you and I'm sure that Ilia has to talk with you." Nikita called, turning towards the pair. "Will you stay for a bit, listen while they eat and I clean up? I'm sure Ilia wouldn't mind, you have plenty of time to get down to the caverns." The housemistress asked Byx, looking back to him. "After all, it is only just seven, you'll have lots of time to do everything and still get a good sleep. I'll make sure of that."

♤ Evangeline ♤

"They were never my family. Real family doesn't hurt you on purpose." She said, holding herself back from spilling anymore details. She listened to Ilia speak, her fingers moving uncomfortably. She needed a violin in her hands, letting the sweet melody of the strings take her away from this world. Like it always had before. She still remembered her reason for learning it. She wanted to have a reason to leave the house for hours on end, but that soon developed into a love for the instrument. Unfortunately, she had never had one of her own. And Evangeline was too scared to ask her parents for one.

She thought for a moment, "I suppose that works for me." She replied, her voice much less shaky now. "Why did you use ravens, when you knew how easily they can be intercepted?" She asked, clasping her hands together to keep them from fidgeting. "You could have used a magic spell to conjure some sort of invisible messenger. Why didn't you?" She didn't seem angry yet, just extremely confused. "You were supposed to protect that student, and they died because your raven was intercepted." She wasn't accusing her, just simply stating a fact.

□● Calliope Cresthill ○■

Calliope did the same for Dragonfly, speaking a few words of farewell to the stallion and letting Ida lead her away from the stables once more. She frowned as they entered the dining hall, the air seeming suffocating. She growled slightly, her body going rigid. "I think you have your answer on whether that student survived or not." She spoke roughly, voice low as the two spies approached the table on the far side of the room. Her eyes lit up at the side of the motherly woman by Byx's side, "Nikita!" She called, practically tripping over herself to greet the woman. "How have you been?" She asked enthusiastically, giving Byx a respectful nod of the head. Even if Callie was of higher status, she refused to make them feel lesser.

꧁ Ilia Farra || Kyrena ꧂

Evangeline's shaky words tore deep at Ilia's heart, she had never had to deal with an abusive family, but she knew of a good few people who had. But Evangeline took a deep breath and asked her first question.

"There are... very few people in the history of this world to have been able to cast true spells. I only dabble in brews and potions, relying on ingredients and circumstances to weave Draig's magic into my work. Had I even been able to cast such a spell, applying that to about ten ravens over distances that would take up to weeks for us to travel.... the amount of magic would simply kill me. As far as I know, it wasn't even the raven that caused it, given the bird made it back to me twice. More likely a road check, they weren't able to lie well enough and that could have raised suspicion."

"There is only one person alive who may have been able to do that sort of magic without such a grievous cost, and I believe even he would struggle to hide ten messages over a great distance. And he is the one planning to wipe these lands of life. I'm sure you can see why I wouldn't have gone to him."

Ilia let that sink in for a second, Kyrena shifting noisily behind her before settling. "Does that help?" She asked, tone genuine even as her words seemed short.

As the pair reached Nikita and Byx, the woman reached forward right away to embrace them both. "I'm well enough loves, bit of an exciting day! How are you two? Musta been a long journey from the capital to here, were you sensible enough to take at least a few breaks?"

Ida glanced to Calliope, a sheepish smile crossing her face as she recalled the 'breaks' - sending the horses through rivers to cool down and scooping up water as they passed while only really having small snacks. "Well... we had a break just before we came inside?" She started and Nikita tsk-ed, shaking her head with a small smile.

Caisin

Being glad he wasn't the only one with adverse reaction to the news helped ease his worry somewhat. But Caisin could confidently agree, this situation did indeed fucking suck.

They both stayed there in silent contemplation for a while, Caisin rubbing his hands back and forth to keep himself busy while he thought. He was surprised at Kyles own admittance to also having ran away from home, but the reasons seemed to be much different than his own. Caisins interest was piqued, but he had to fight the urge to ask questions, as he could tell the subject was still rather sore for Kyle. The heart-to-heart however, did help him feel a little more at ease being here, a talk with at least one other person helping to lift the veil of mystery about this academy, and to peel back the shroud covering all the faceless strangers here.
As Kyle continued, Caisin pulled his feet up onto the sofa, his knees against his chest as he listened in rapt silence. There was definitely an otherworldly aura about the dragons that always took his breath away even just thinking about them. The headmasters didnt pick them though, the dragons did. Could dragons make mistakes about things like that? Beings pulsing with magic and wisdom?
His thoughts returned to the constant pull he felt, even now, drawing him down to the caverns. Whoever it was, calling him, they had chosen him, and just him. But why?
Pushing that question aside to answer later, he briefly looked at Kyle, before allowing himself a small smile.
"They are definitely amazing! Ive only been here a day, yet I'm still struggling with the idea that they're still alive, and that in some way, they chose me to help them come back."
Thoughts once again turning back to the caverns, about the innocent lives tucked away inside, not even ready to begin life yet, and the idea that someone was out there ready to kill them; Caisins heart immediately started beating faster, feeling his face flush with anger out of protectiveness and fear for these small lives.
"I don't even know what my dragon is, if I even end up ready for one, but already, I can't bring myself to think about it if any of them came to harm, or worse, being sentenced to die, just for having been born."
He pondered on his own statement for a bit, before giving a sigh, trying to clear his thoughts again. Putting his legs down, and pulling himself off the couch, standing upright now, he brushed himself off while looking down to the floor.
"I don't know honestly… I have a lot of stuff to think about. I should uh- should probably go to bed for now, clear my mind and think all this over carefully. Hopefully by tomorrow, ill have a better grasp on all my thoughts and about what to do." He stated quietly, stuffing his hands in his pockets.
Looking up at Kyle again, he said. "Hey, uh, thanks for coming in to check up on me. The small talk definitely helped. I uh- I should also probably apologize to the headmasters for running out like that huh?" He chuckled.
"Ill pay them a visit tomorrow after I've thought everything over." He said, more to himself this time as he headed toward the door.
Pausing in the doorway, he looked back again. "Hey, does… does it ever bother you being surrounded by dragon riders, knowing you may never be able to share a bond with one?" He asked earnestly, thinking back to the way he talked so passionately about them, with what seemed like nothing but admiration.

➷ Kyle

Once again that day, Kyle found himself wondering on what brought the students here in the first place. He knew the basics of course- something about.. hmm.. special bonds and baby wyverns and letters yada yada.. ..maybe he should work on his listening skills more. Anyway, his curiosity on the matter piqued as Caisin went on. His mind lingered, and he couldn't help but wonder what it must feel like, being.. chosen. But- it didn't matter, it couldn't. Kyle made his way here regardless and that was a small miracle in itself.

Shoving away his thoughts, he nodded to Caisin's words. To imagine the dragons getting hurt.. it was an awful thought. He tried to picture what the baby wyverns might be like once they hatched, and already his heart seized with a fearsome sort of protectiveness over such small, new lives. A new realization popped into his head, and he recalled the words of Headmaster Ilia just before Nyx had walked out. If a student decided to leave, their wyvern.. he frowned. Was that-  was that right? He wanted to dwell on this disturbing thought more, but was pulled back to the present by the rustle of movement. Maybe he'd ask one of the headmasters about it tomorrow.

Kyle leaned back as the other boy pulled himself to his feet, propping himself with his arms. Ah, bed.
"Sounds good," He murmured. He should probably head to bed soon himself, get his nights rest for whatever may lay ahead tomorrow and the days following. Now that everyone was here, it was surely only a matter of time until the new wyverns eventually hatched, and then it would be busy, he was certain. Busy, but exciting. Kyle shrugged nonchalantly at Caisin's thanks, a crooked smile crossing his face. He was just relieved he'd done at least somewhat alright- talks like this were usually his elder brother's specialty.

Don't think about him. He glanced down, smoothing a hand over the texture of the couch as Caisin made towards the doorway. He glanced up again as the boy paused, turning back towards him and opening his mouth. Kyle froze at the question that came next, stomach sinking.

In the beat of silence, a bitter sensation swamped his chest and crept up his throat, jealousy finally breaking through his careful dampening and rearing its ugly head. He swallowed thickly, forcing the smile back to his face and hoping it didn't look like the grimace it felt like. Kyle had never been great at lying. Still, he let out a wispy chuckle, grappling the unpleasant feeling and wrestling it back down into its small box to deal with.. later. Or never.

"Nahh," He drawled, rising to his feet as well and tucking his thumbs into his pockets, "It's.. fine." Kyle grappled for something else to say, but could only manage a casual shrug and a change of subject.

"Night, Caisin," He nodded, smile shifting to something a bit more genuine, "It was cool talking to you."

♤ Evangeline ♤

She frowned as she listened, trying to keep herself focused even as she became more and more tired. "How come he is more powerful magic wise than most other people in this land, and yet he's trying to kill off the race of dragons. Isn't it a bit counterproductive?" She asked, seeming extremely confused. It just didn't make sense. Why would a man who wants to kill off a race that produces as well as thrives off magic, learn the very practice? I mean, she already knew he was a hypocrite. But this was above hypocrisy, it was stupidity. She nodded to the Headmaster. "For now, I am satiated. But I will probably seek you out tomorrow at some point." She said, rising to her feet and dipping her head. "Thank you for talking with me. Goodnight."

She made her way back to the dorms, her limbs becoming heavy with exhaustion. When Evangeline finally arrived at the building, she was about to fall asleep where she was standing. She entered, dragging herself to her room with a mumble of a goodnight to anyone in the main quarters. She pulled her tight clothing off and slid into a cotton nightgown, sliding under her sheets and letting out a large sigh. This let all the tension in her muscles seep out as she drifted to sleep.

□● Calliope Cresthill ○■

She nodded, "A very exciting day. Both in a bad way and a good one if I am correct." She said, her body tensing up and the friendly air gone. "They're dead aren't they? The student?" She asked, hands clasping behind her back to hide the way they were fidgeting. "That's mostly why we're here unfortunately, because Ida thought we could get here in time. But I can see we're too late by the... cloud hanging over everyone's heads." Calliope's voice sounded ice cold, but really she was just hiding the anger and grief. She would let it out later, when she was alone.

She was glad that Ida was able to keep her carefree demeanor so far, but Callie just couldn't wait anymore. She had to know. She had to be sure they were too late. She hoped the bad energy was just from something else, but that was foolish and she knew it.

「」Nikita「」|| ༺ Ida ༻

Nikita sighed but nodded, explaining quietly just what had happened that day. Ida dipped her head, fighting to keep her composure, and Nikita was quick to finish.

It wasn't long before they sat around the kitchen table, drinking and eating. Ilia and Kyrena showed up eventually, a small discussion of how they would continue tomorrow and the group split apart soon enough. Raymond and Nikita left to sleep, Ida and Calliope returned to their horses for one last check before they too would sleep. Ilia and Byx made the walk to get their wyverns saddled and ready to finish the last tasks of the night.

═══ *.·:·.☽✧ ✦ ✧☾.·:·.* ═══

꧁ Ilia Farra || Kyrena ꧂

Ilia let out a huff of vague amusement. "I couldn't tell you. I suspect... he wishes for complete control. How can he have that when creatures of magic and mystery still exist? No one will be fully loyal if there's a chance to be saved." Evangeline nodded and after a quiet goodnight, slipped away to sleep.

Kyrena and Ilia watched as Evangeline slipped inside the dorms, quiet thoughts passed between the two of the conversation. They would talk more tomorrow. But now it was time to sort out the last of things this evening.

Kyle first. Then to check on Nikita and Raymond, make sure they were alright. The caverns. Then take Kyrena to send more fog billowing into the air, covering the valley and hiding the wyverns.

As they went to turn, Kyle came out of the dorm house, stepping aside as Evangeline went inside. Ilia raised her voice and called out to him.

"Kyle! Wonderful timing. Come, walk with us, there's news you need to know." The boy fell in step with a crooked grin and Kyrena rumbled behind them, sending warm air above their heads. So impatient, Ilia teased at the wyvern but as they began to walk towards the headmaster's dorms, she did speak up.

"With everything that's happened today, I couldn't tell you earlier. But, again, news. Good news. An egg should have died today. Sunk into the cold water of its cavern, melting into the magic already embedded in the masses of caves below the ground. Instead, the bond shifted. I can't explain how, or why, given that it's only ever happened twice in the history of the riders but... it attached itself to you." She paused, letting Kyle take in the information. "Rather late, I'm very aware, but I'd like to extend an invitation to join the Academy properly. As a student. Training to ride a wyvern, learning of Draig's history, tearing down the corrupt king infecting this land with dark magic. If you do accept... well, classes start tomorrow. Nikita will have you moved into the student's dorms, and I'll be sure to add you to the list of people I must buy supplies for. Can't be having a student without proper training clothes, hmm?" The headmaster's dorms loomed up ahead and Ilia paused, turning to face Kyle properly. "Go, try sleep. I'll see you tomorrow and I expect to have an answer."

--

Both Ida and Calliope had arrived apparently, practically wolfing down the food set out. A few minutes of discussion and the spies left to sleep, Nikita and Raymond following soon after.

Neha and Byx joined Kyrena and Ilia, the riders making their way to the bottom of the cavern. Best to put on saddles and their wyvernscale protection, Ilia had thought, the eggs weren't terribly close and it wasn't anywhere near as safe as being on the flat ground of the valley. Especially not in the caves full of fire and lava that housed the eggs made of fire and blood.

Soon enough, after a quiet visit to the fully burned pyre to gather the ashes, the wyverns tilted their wings up, soaring up onto the ledge that hid the pools from visitors. Two circles as the ash rained down towards the cold water, eggs barely shifting as the remains drifted to brush against the shells. Well. Most of them.

One shifted, dipping in the water before starting to sink properly. A harsh shake and the insides started to glow, Ilia frowning down at it but Byx had already sent Neha into a dive. The storm wyvern reached for the egg but it hissed and sputtered in her claws, orange fire lighting the shell and the silhouette of the baby wyvern within.

"It's changed! It... it's a fire egg!" Ilia almost laughed in shock and Kyrena dove herself, rescuing the drowning egg with a taloned foot.

--

The roar of fire was loud and harsh before Ilia and Kyrena. The rider shifted in her saddle, keeping the egg close and keeping down against the saddle. Kyrena tilted down, eyes narrowed as she approached the caves where she had grown up, spiralling through the tunnel as the warm light before them grew. The gust of warm air lifted Kyrena, gliding through the cave made for adolescent wyverns in mind. But they didn't stop, continuing on towards the pillars of stone with centuries old nests burnt into the stone. There were a few empty, a few filled with constantly burning flames and more filled with lava.

Kyrena slowly made her way to her own nest. Both wyverns had apparently chosen to keep the eggs safe in their own nests, refusing to let them grow in the larger areas. Then again, there was more than enough space. Ilia didn't get off, not willing to test the limit of shed scales, and let Kyrena fuss over the lava filled hole.

Took you long enough. Ilia teased mentally and Kyrena ignored her, checking the eggs one last time before returning to the air.

--

The air was quiet and the cold was just starting to seep into animals and humans below but Ilia was warm with the firey wyvern beneath her. The soft splashing of water was just starting to be heard up ahead, the great waterfall that flowed from.... somewhere, not even Ilia had found the start, all the way down to the academy bubbling cheerfully before them. A quiet command to tilt downwards and Kyrena slowly dips toward one of the larger pools.

She settled on the edge, flame already glowing bright in her chest before the air was light with dragon fire, sending masses of steam into the air and almost immediately dispersing into the clouds of fog that shielded the wyverns. The moon was creeping steadily into the sky, beginning the last leg of its journey to settle directly above before it would slide down the other side and soon Ilia called Kyrena away.

--

The sun rose and Kyrena rose with it, pulling Ilia from sleep. Nikita was already fussing around and making breakfast, Ida finally having managed to sleep in. It was early. They had time.
