Over the past few months, I've seen an increase in some of the weirdest names ever seen to wolf kind. And it got me wondering; are people struggling to name their wolves, packs and den sites? So I began paying attention to the chat and saw that, yep, this is a thing. People are struggling and so I've decided to give you all a helping paw! I'll list some sites with the first one being my all time favorite! First: Behind the Name Second: Fantasy Name Generators Third: Name Generator So for the first one, I've used it alot so it's the one most familiar to me but to everyone else? Probably not so much. I've noticed people wanting to create back stories, histories, lore, etc, to their wolves and I've noticed they want their wolves' names to have meaning. So I'll guide you through Behind the Name! When you first click on the Behind the Name link, you'll come to the below screen; Consider this to be the "home screen" as this is the place you'll want to refer too, the most as you go through your journey. I do recommend exploring the site, but I would recommend doing so when you're not naming a wolf at that moment in time What you'll notice is a box at the top and I often get asked "what do it mean when it says First name and 2 middle names?" Well let me dive you into the shallow ends! First Name Only First Name, Middle Name First Name, 2 Middle Names First Name, 3 Middle Names Basically, your wolf will have it's first name, middle name then however many middle names you want it to have. Most people tend to just click "first name only" because it's easier on them to form hunting parties, figure out who a pup sitter is, etc. When you give your wolves longer names, it seems to complicate things. But say you want to generate a life story? No problem! In the Red box this will generate your wolf's life story. Everything from where it lives, to how it died, to the age it died at. Please keep in mind that these aspects will not align with how Wolvden works but you can make your "deceased" wolves immortal prior to them actually dying in game. It just means you won't be able to breed them or assign them roles and they'll never age. In the Purple box this means the name won't be rare. Rare names are names that are hardly used, either due to the complexity of spelling them, saying them, or due to legal reasons (in most nations such as Germany, certain names are prohibited under law for obvious reasons). In the Light Blue box, this will make sure your names aren't too short. Names like the Celtic Una, which means White Wave, will be excluded from your search. Now you get to assign your wolf a gender! On Wolvden, genders are pre-assigned and I can understand how this can be an issue for someone who may align as non-binary etc. But please be mindful that the animal kingdom, doesn't work like the Human kingdom does. However, for your story purposes, Behind the Name has done the following; Masculine Feminine Ambiguous Either In this you can have a non-binary name (Ambiguous) or a combination of the three provided. So now you've got the basics out of the way! On to the fun part! Choosing what language you'd like your name to come from. A good 99% of the names generated will have meanings behind them. The Fantasy ones are hit and miss most of the time. But the rest are pretty solid in providing name meanings. All you have to do is click on the boxes provided by each region and or language, and vola! Once you've done this click on GENERATE and you'll be taken to a new page! For me, I've chosen the following; Feminine; First name only; Generate life story; of Icelandic or Norwegian heritage On the next page provided to me, here we get the name Mari which is of Norwegian heritage. As stated, it's provided her with a life story, where she's from, what she died from, how long she lived, etc. However, don't like the name provided to you? See the word "Regenerate" circled in blue? If you click that, it'll provide you with a whole new name and story! "But Khaleesi! We want to know the name meaning!" And this is where Behind the Name upped their game. You can click on the name provided to you and it'll take you to a new page. That page will tell you how to say the name Mari, what other variations of the name are out there, how popular it is, when it came into being and so much more! To save your eyes, I've simply provided the link Behind the Name is used by a wide range of people. From authors to film makers, it's a handy tool to have especially when you're in a bind and simply can't come up with that unique name to make your wolf, your pack or your den stand out.
