Gryphon Clutches [Open]

((what phrog said! don't worry about it at all! <3))

Akos leaned a talon over the tree branch, the sharp nail barely brushing the ground. A leaf snagged his claw and he pulled the appendage back up to nibble at it while he continued to eye the ground with suspicion. He mouthed the leaf then spat it out, ears flattening in disgust. Ew. Plants were nasty. He wiggled his foot, the remains scattering and gently floating to the ground below.

The young gryphon suddenly became as still as a rock, body tensing as they heard the voice below. Another gryphon? A sharp exhale went past his lips. That changed things. He hadn't been around another gryphon in a long time. Akos stood, teetering on the branch for a few moments as they tried to decide what exactly to do. He could feel the small bit of anxiety and panic fluttering in his chest, like a nervous little hummingbird wanting to get free. He could always run off if the interaction didn't go as planned. Hell, did he even want an interaction though? He felt irritation bubbling alongside the anxiety in his chest. He was angry at himself and irritated at the gryphon below. Still, he had to do something instead of just sitting on the branch. He pawed at the branch, claws scraping the limb before he jumped the last several feet to the forest floor below.

He could smell the gryphon somewhere, but was struggling to pinpoint where exactly he was. Akos let out a low warble before finally speaking. "You could be good prey?" He said, though he didn't really mean it. There was hesitation in his voice, stilted words as if he didn't know exactly what to say or how to interact with the other gryphon. He just stood stiffly, ears pricked to listen.

((Ok ;u; ))

Privet flinched as he saw the other gryphon appear at once. A wolf gryphon! The stranger was bigger than he was. It was unnerving to see something so agitated at him. He knew if things got bad, he wouldn't stand a chance.

Should he answer?? It didn't seem like such a good idea anymore. The other gryphon had made a mess of the tree he sat on with his talons. Privet had watched it all fall to the forest below. He imagined the talons didn't have to work hard at all to cause the leave debris that preceded their arrival.

He decided not to answer back. Instead, as slowly as he could, he straightened out his form and began to move backwards. His red belly fur dragged along the dirt. If he was successful, he would be able to navigate backwards to his burrow without much trouble.

The earth betrayed his steps with the soft brushing a of dirt and rocks. He could only hope the stranger wouldn't hear it.

"Ah! Wonderful. I've been avoiding it all morning." Morel's head sunk back into the brush as she bunched her muscles up, then the appeared all at once with a great leap. Her long legs soared through the leaves. She landed gracefully, kicking her legs idly to remove the extra debris.

Her eyes rested on the other gryphon once more as she stood straight and tall. There was a soft swish swish as her tail feathers wagged and brushed against tall grasses. She had not seen someone like her in so long! It gave her heart a huge burst of optimism.

"It's just me right now. Several moons ago, my family was chased by human hunters." Morel thought back to the day. It had been the scariest moment of her life so far, scarier than the bear. The gryphons had just woken up during the Golden hour of evening when they heard something approaching them. Strange bald faces peered up their tree, their strange looking talons holding long pieces of metal that glinted with the setting sun. She continued, "My mother told us all to split up. They took off to the sky, but I ran because I'm not good at flying. The humans chased me for a bit but i out ran them easily. I'm trying to find my flock again." Her voice faulted for a moment and she paused with her beak shut tight. Then, a moment later, light flickered back into her face. "I'm glad to meet another gryphon! My name is Morel."

Atalia watched in slight amusement as they sunk into the bush before shooting out, landing before her. She could hear the soft swishing of tail feathers brushing the ground and wanted to smile but kept her face clear. No need to go around getting attached.

"Horrible to experience. But in a way, unavoidable." Her own mind flashed towards her family, her mate. The day they came. Rustling her wings Atalia sets that thought away. "It was smart to run. Flying is natural but some humans, if not all, have ways of capturing us from the skies." She paused, thinking. A sudden jolt of that probably scared the other made her speak up again. "If there was a few gryphons flying together it would've been easier for some to escape. Or to fight back, if they were caught."

Atalia smiled slightly. "I'm Atalia. A pleasure to meet you as well. Seeing another gryphon managing to survive.... it's good to see."

Akos let out another warble, this one irritated and almost childish as he didn't receive a response from the other gryphon. His snuffled at the ground, nose trying to catch the scent of the gryphon. Despite the close presence of the other hybrid, the scent was completely muddled, mixing with the earthy scents of the dirt and undergrowth. Nose pointed towards the ground, they walked in a large circle at a slow pace, crunching at the ground with each step. Why am I even still here? he thought, a small caw of annoyance filling the relatively silent air to go along with his thoughts. He didn't even want to be around other gryphons, always staying true to his own self-imposed isolation. Still, he felt something tugging at him, a small string wanting him to interact even if the rest, the majority of him didn't want to. It wasn't always easy, being by himself. Akos enjoyed his solitude but there was always hard days. They seemed to come a lot more often than not now.

He continued his slow circle, still deep in his own thoughts. So much so that he just barely heard the rustle of something moving. They stilled, mottled head tilting as their ears swiveled in the general direction. He didn't have a direct pinpoint, but he had a rough guess on the direction. He slowly started in the general direction, feet soft and almost silent on the ground. Not quite though, with the shifting of grass and leaves under his toes. They then stood still, not exactly knowing where to go from there. What did he even say? Akos hesitated before speaking the first thing that came to mind.

"You're a gryphon?" He said, though it definitely came out more like a question than a statement. The words were still stilted, hesitant and unsure in his interaction. Akos then wanted to bonk his head on the closest tree. Of course they were a gryphon, why would he even ask? Well, he wasn't exactly known for his small talk. Or his conversation skills at all, really. His eyes were slitted, full of wariness, though the irritation seemed to be gone for the moment.

Privet was almost back to his den. Almost. The words and the uncertainty of them stopped him in his tracks. If he had kept moving just a little more, he could have felt the cold walls of the borrow press up against his tail feathers. Instead, his dark fluffy ears raised slightly with his head.

The smaller gryphon could see the young wolf gryphon so much better now. The tiny movement of his fox ears had probably already given him away. Some gryphons didn't have the same great sense of sight that he had. It all depended on what animal traits they had… and whether they were better built to be predator or prey.

"I am a gryphon," Privets voice came out hoarse. It had not been used to speak for quite some time now, "Just like you… I know there are not as many of us as there used to be… so I'd love if your intentions were to leave me alive."

β€”β€”

Morel looked at Atalia curiously. In her optimistic oblivion, it was highly likely that each member of her family that she so looked up to had survived the encounter with humans. They were great hunters and terrific at flying. It had barely crossed her mind that anything else would happen.

"I've been on my own for a bit now. Do you want to form a mini flock with me for some time? I'm good at hunting stuff but it's been a little lonely." She was under the impression that this was a serious gryphon, but she was also reminded of her mother when looking at Atalia. There was experience and loss in her corvid eyes… Just like her mother had in her owl eyes.

"I had a close encounter with that bear earlier. It would be nice to have someone watching my back again. I would watch your back too, of course!" Morel looked quite pleased that she had the pleasure of meeting another nice gryphon. To be fair, she had never met one that wasn't nice.

Atalia's eyes narrowed, running over the offer in her mind. A flock was serious. A friendship... that would work. Morel was young but she was clearly old enough to be mostly alone. She had her own flock, her own family to get to and certainly didn't need Atalia for much longer after that.

After a few seconds Atalia shifted her weight, coming out of her thoughts and giving a small nod. "I'd be willing to help you. Being flock is not something as light as that but a friendship would work. I won't be travelling far but I have a decent den and a clear territory that's safe enough as long as you keep an eye out for any visitors. I believe there's berry bushes and a small waterfall downstream and bears do like to frequent that but they do seem to avoid most of my area."

Akos chittered before slowly sitting down and bringing his feathered wings close to his fur. His eyes did another sweep of the floor in front of him. For a moment he saw nothing, then a small flash of fur! Their eyes locked onto the dark tufted ears poking out from the ground, mostly hidden by the greenery of the forest floor. He let out a sharp exhale, ears flattening against his head. Seeing another gryphon was a lot different from just hearing them speak. From the positioning of the other gryphon's ears towards the ground, he could guess that they were going towards their burrow, meaning that they were likely smaller than him in size.

He remained silent for a long time, even after the other gryphon spoke. The gentle breeze ruffled his fur, a whisper in the otherwise quiet forest. "And if I didn't? Leave you alive?" They finally asked, trying to gauge his reaction. He didn't plan on doing anything, but reactions were always interesting. The young gryphon didn't quite relax, but the tension in his muscles seemed to ease. Knowing that the other gryphon was smaller than him seemed to help, but he certainly wouldn't underestimate him either.

((Ack I am a worm, my apologies))

"Ah, that would be… fine." Morel tried to not show her disappointment. In her mind, friendship was already achieved by meeting her with kindness. She had not known many gryphons, but all had been both friends and flock to her. It's fine. This is all… new territory. New territory that Atalia was willing to share.

She shook her head to clear her thoughts. Hopefully her new friend here hadn't noticed. "Thank you very much. I really appreciate it! Your territory sounds beautiful. The places the bear likes sound especially beautiful." Morel snorted, a sort of hooting giggle. "I will certainly keep an eye out for visitors as well! Maybe by flock with make an appearance as they make their way back home."

Privet squawked, "Then I'd be dead, I guess!!" What else? His voice had reached a pitch that was absolutely fearful, but edged with sass. "If you're going to ask stupid questions, I'd rather just be eaten, please." He knew the other gryphon most certainly had at least his approximate location figured out. Could he see any part of him yet? Perhaps he was lucky, so dull from the dirt and poor diet. He thought he was rather eye-catching as a healthy chick. How awfully ironic for it to turn in his favor.

His body shook nervously as he waited for the other gryphon to make a move. If he pounced, would he be able to make it underground? At least deeper into the thick foliage? Privet thought of that mouse he ate earlier- Back before it became a sad, stored snack. A small creature trapped under paw of something much larger and livelier than he was. Such a small lifespan. It was hard to have pity for such an inconsequential creature.
