always check the dice rolls when battling- this can very easily determine your strategy. Of course, bonus checks (like a +1 from focus or a -1 from tired) matter... but arguably, stat rolls matter most! if a lead has low stats and keeps failing their stat rolls on special moves, biting would be the best bet to get an opponent to bleed- but it has it's drawbacks. of course, it has the inherent -1 check (so you only get a bleed by rolling a 6 and having 1 point subtracted), it doesn't use stat checks to influence the roll (great if you have low stats, terrible if you have high ones) and every time you use it you lose 2 energy, which can easily drain up your bar. meanwhile, if a lead has high stats and can succeed their stat rolls more often than not, bite should only really be used on group enemies or as a last resort if they're close to winning and don't have a bleed active but lack the HP to set up latch. of course i already mentioned the drawbacks of bite, but latching and crushing/shearing have their own benefits- an opponent won't be able to attack or inflict statuses like bleeding on you (saving your precious HP and salve uses), you get a nice +1 bonus from a successful strength roll on latch and crush, lots of common enemies (for example- all birds, foxes, coyotes and humans) have the soft skin trait giving you a +1 roll on shear, and while latch uses 2 energy, crush and shear only use 1 and letting go of your opponent to rest and wait uses none, saving energy to find more battles. |
