Alphas and Dominance as you know them are a myth

Posted 2020-09-25 12:02:09

Sneeps; you posted while I was typing! Same though. It's also. Usually a very unhealthy dynamic that makes me cringe. I'd love some werewolf stories that aren't steeped in toxicity and misinformation, they're my favorite monster for sure.

Thank you for posting this! I know most people were just misinformed, but I still couldn't help but feel a bit... annoyed when I saw people use those terms to describe their wolves. I want to say that it is ultimately harmless, but I do think it sort of leads to a poor understanding of the animal world, especially in how dogs and even humans behave.

Venex; Yeah, it's the sort of misinformation that seems harmless at first, but creeps up in how animals are treated and housed. Honestly, it probably impacts animal welfare/wolf and coyote protection laws too, that people see them so simplistically and animalistically (not to say they aren't animals.. but they're much more complex and intelligent and emotional than many people think).

Oh, yknow, I wasn't thinking about how it might lead to people mistreating their animals... but yeah, now that you mention it, that is absolutely a thing that happens, and that sucks :/

wrt omegaverse fiction, I'm pretty lax about that because lol it's fiction. I'm more worried about the stuff that gets published perpetuating harmful stereotypes surrounding like, gay men and trans people especially. There is a good number of writers on ao3 though who know how to handle the subject properly without perpetuating those stereotypes, so I support those people wholeheartedly! Be free be young be wild and all that good stuff, lmao

Maya; I absolutely agree about the a/b/o thing, there it's really more of a pet peeve and "why are you doing this, you're wrong and this is toxic" sort of thing for me. As a queer person myself, I literally couldn't agree more xD It does kind of personally ruin the story for me, but as a general rule I don't care enough about that to try to talk to those people about it.

But yeah, it does have a lot of effects people don't expect, as misinformation tends to. Which is. Sad. It makes me sad to see people not know how to properly care for animals (and people) who depend on them, or even put the slightest bit of effort into understanding what they don't have an intimate knowledge of.

ikr?

like

notice how anytime a character shows weakness or doubt they get labeled as an 'omega' in fanfics

an omega is given traditional housewife duties and are often seen as weaker in every single way?

Not really healthy to see feminine/not masculine things = weak omega

and then any character thats not 100percent masculine is labeled as an omega.. punishing them for not being a toxic man (no emotions, etc)??

Oh man, I did not see this other conversation until now, but when talking about the uh, fictional subgenre, either use slashes between the letters or call it something else (omegaverse is the other most well known term I think) because the other word is an anti-indigenous Australian slur. Just letting y'all know!

xD I agree completely! I'm queer too, and I have a love-hate relationship with omegaverse it's kind of hilarious. Like I love some dynamics and despise others and it's an adventure for sure whenever I log onto ao3 lmfao.

Hnngh yeah... and there's so much, like, conflicting info out there, it's no wonder people get it wrong. My mother's own vet told her to "act like the alpha" to her wolfdog (very low content and we rescued him as a puppy, we did not intentionally buy or breed a wolfdog! that's bad imo!) and I was like no absolutely not do not do that, you're just gonna make him more anxious than he already is!
