Define what a generation of a wolf is

Posted 2021-12-03 13:22:54
Took me a good few minutes to understand what was being suggested here because I honestly thought that was already the standard. I think it's really weird to say "a wolf's generation is determined by personal playstyle" because a person can objectively prove what generation a wolf is: open the family tree, and click through the tree until you reach the furthest first generation. Of course, people can argue that the wolf could be a different generation number based on a separate wolf that has no further heritage, and I suppose that's why staff has the stance it currently has.

But either way, if a fancy calculator that determines what generation a wolf is can't be added, I would hope a statement could be made that either defines the term in the way suggested or can at least regulate how the term is used by a little bit. Like, maybe a person would have to say "x generation relative to y wolf" rather than just "g4" which could mean anything in the current system.

Definitely supporting, I agree you can modbox but contrary to what other people in this thread think, alot of people I know that have doen such a thing get told there's nothing the mods can do when they hear back. So unfortunately modboxing is unhelpful in this situation, when having gen defined would honestly just help stop everything in the first place.

Support, although I don't think false advertisement should be the impetus for this feature.

This is a genetics game; part of the appeal is the genealogy aspect. I think a better way to solve this issue is to have an option to look at a wolf's family tree in its entirety, maybe as a button on the lineage page Wolvden has already. However, for this to work, the developers would have to create and develop a new web page, seeing as the current lineage tree is setup in html as a grid table.

Instead, maybe we could have a "longest lineage" section in the family tree page? It doesn't have to be descriptive, it could say "7 Generations".

Ooooh, I definitely like the idea of one page having full ancestry on it. That would make it super easy to check and, depending on playstyle, tell if the wolf would personally work for you/your breeding projects as some people like having everything line up. Ie longer paternal lines and shorter maternal lines, or where everything matches up evenly with no unkowns popping up and making lineages look uneven or spotty in random spots.

To have the option to see the full ancestry of a wolf somewhere in their family page does sound pretty useful, but on itself it would not help with the issue that prompted me to post this suggestion in the first place.

Also, I've edited the suggestion, hopefuly it's now easier to read and undestand than it was

Yeah, definitely wouldn't help as people can still claim its a gen 2 when really the wolf would be a gen 13 without them being told its false advertising. Would just be a pretty useful feature for project/breeding purposes.

Still hoping generations will get officially defined soon though.

Well, I've changed my mind on this, I guess. It sounds from what others are saying that, as long as no official definition of generation is provided, the mods can do nothing to support players in cases of fraud. Ultimately this seems like a simple thing to add that doesn't really have any downiside.
