What ARE Silver/Gold Cones

What ARE Silver/Gold Cones

In Lioden, the currency is Silver/Gold Beetles, which could theoretically be actual beetles in that world that lions decided were valuable (and I guess decided to kidnap a great many… ). You can also find them crawling around in certain encounters, which suggests they are really alive.

Anyways!
So we can find Silver Cones (and buy gold), and a lot of other creatures seem aware that wolves want these Silver Cones regardless of whether they're aware they're currency or not. Are Silver Cones from a specific type of tree? Is some trickster(s) sitting around painting them Silver and Gold (the raccoons???) Where is the paint coming from? What's it made of? How do they acquire so many Pine Cones in the first place?
Is there some sort of Pine Cone supply line in which animals are encouraged or strong-armed into delivering mass quantities of Pine Cones to the aforementioned trickster(s)?

If some trickster(s) IS painting these cones, how did they convince all of Wolfdom that these were valuable and the currency to be used?
Was it the [presumably raccoon] currency first, and wolves adopted it in order to do business with them? Did they trick wolves into using them?
